TheBestSideOfTheWall
Once again, I'm sure this has been answered here before but I can come up with the right search term. What is the zig zag cut into the side of the mountain? I thought it was mining at first but google maps make it look like a wide road to no where. El Saltos
Originally it was to provide access to a hotel, casino, and houses. There are two condo buildings visible. No current info on the hotel and casino.
JayBearII
Construction was stopped some years ago because the mountain is ejido (native) land and one cannot build there. A living warning to other potential builders, I hope, because otherwise, it is just an eyesore.

Don't assume this has been stopped.
Yo1
Maybe someone paid more graft to the Chapala govt. to start up again?
cedros
So is that strange shaped building part way up a condo? A rather odd shape if it is.

It is probably a private house. They were selling lots. The Hotel and Casino seems to be going no where, though they are mantaning the road,. There is a problem with paying bribes for things that take longer than one administration. The personel change and what have you done for me lately? They sure spent a lot of money on that road to generate little return. I am sure they can't afford to stop now so they will keep pushing.
WideSky
If you pay attention coming down the libramiento there is a new billboard advertising something to do with the hill; I'm usually driving so just noticed that it changed. Think it either sale or rental in the two places on the mountainside.
michael2595
I hear it's a ski slope for all the northerners. Snow making machines will be on their way to town.
ComputerGuy
They are still digging and drilling the "road", and still driving everyone who lives down at the bottom crazy after at least five years of this.
johanson
How long has it been going on computer guy? I'm guessing closer to 8 to 10 years. But I am not sure. I just know that every year or three one sees more activity on the hill and all of us guessing experts have all of these wonderful ideas about what is really going on there. Now with the politicians talking about global cooling, I like the theory about snow making machines most. especially for the very top of the mountain which must be more than 7000 to 8000 feet above sea level. Having grown up near the Mt St Helens volcano, maybe we could start a rumor that volcanic activity has been spotted up there. All kidding aside, I would love to know what the real plans are. Mainecoons
Hotel and casino, Pete, and maybe some expensive residential lots. Plans haven't change, timetable for doing it obviously has. Our only hope is it goes for so long the cost of paying off the locals and state politicians gets so high it never happens. We'll still be stuck with that ugly slash, however. I see the construction on those illegal high rises in La Floresta has stopped. The courts apparently forced our wonderful local government to shut it down after they ignored repeated court orders to do so. In the end, it will happen. La Floresta is fighting valiantly but in the end, I suspect there's just too much graft money involved.
Mostlylost
The name is Las Minas. They are selling houses and lots. There are very deep pockets including an ex state politician. Indians never stopped work on the project. The casino project was 1km east.
Mainecoons
Where are the lots? All the way to the top? Can one drive up there now to look? Thanks for the update.

Is this the one that is a pristine, pine forest lake surround by what is left of the bioreserve? There were some pretty big plans there, people would be flown in from Guadalajara in helicopters, there would be a cable car to the casino. If this is the case, the narrow road up there is just the service entrance - no public allowed.

Be careful. My wife and I have walked up there on more than one occasion. There are no safety issues. Judging by the two homes (one completed and one under construction) the lots are basically the side of the mountain. Except for the first part of the road that borders Vista Alegre, it is a very substantial paved road all the way up. I agree it's a blight on the mountain but it's a very expensive blight so someone must believe that they will see a return on all that investment somehow. A casino was never in the plans for this development. That was planned for section of land accessed through Chula Vista Norte and to the northeast of the main development. That land was cleared but nothing ever came of the elaborate plans they had for condos and a casino there...at least not so far!

I agree with you betty. Old Town Vallarta is well on it's way to what you describe and La Floresta probably not far behind. It's Mexico and money talks.
