One result is that a 'young' cataract in that eye has become much worse, and ophamologists here and in Canada feel it should be dealt with surgically within a year. Current wait times for cataract surgery (which is covered by the provincial health plan) is 18 months or more. I am thinking of getting the surgery done here next winter. Can someone advise me on the approximate cost of cataract surgery in an eye that has had a detached retina previously? I believe a different kind of lens is required under these conditions. Why not put yourself on the wait list with your Eye Surgeon? ?x4 hrs notice for a 15 min procedure, 30 min if u add the wait time to be released. I won't see my optometrist in Canada until May, and they then refer me to an opthamologist (wait time over 12 months), then on his/her list ( 3 months or so) before surgery. Rather than wait 18 months for surgery in Canada, (which is covered under provincial insurance) I thought about paying for surgery here in order to get it sooner (perhaps autumn of this year? Unfortunately for him, he had his drivers license suspended until he had the surgery. As I recall it was also around 18 months waiting time. He ended up getting depressed. He was not poor since he use to own a private single engine plane and lived in what was considered a desirable area. I simply did not have the heart to tell him that he could have had the surgery done in Buffalo NY (1/2 hour drive). I had my cataract surgery in Guadalajara about 8 years ago. Ferret Posted February 6 Report Share Posted February 6 Cover your bases Stuphel. Make an appointment with Dra. Camacho at the Eye Center in Chapala and hope you get in for that "look/see" before you leave Mexico. She will make the surgery appointment for your next trip here. She only does surgery on one eye at a time but at least you'll know if you need it done on both or just one and the expected costs. Then head home to Canada for your appointment in May and jump through whatever hoops they now require. At the very least, you'll have a second opinion and two options for the timing of the surgery and you can cancel (to the delight of some other patient waiting) whichever surgery doesn't suit you after they have both been scheduled. Be aware that my mum did not like one surgeon in Ontario and she had her cataract surgery with another surgeon in Ontario. The FIRST surgeon reported that she had not had the surgery (nasty entitled p$#ck) and her license was suspended until she proved that a second surgeon had, indeed, done the surgery. Dra. Camacho does not do surgery that isn't necessary. We've been watching a very slow growing cataract in my right eye for four years now. I had recent cataract surgery with Dra Marianna at Quality Cake and was very pleased. I don't remember the cost but it was under $700. dcstroker Posted February 6 Report Share Posted February 6 Dra. Camacho is my eye doctor. I have cataracts also. Last year when I went in I was quoted 55,000 pesos per eye. Mind you this is for the most expensive type of lens, no glasses needed after surgery. Everyone's eyes are different so your case might be different. I used the retina specialist at Dr. Camacho' s office. Had a driver to and from GDL. There are several options when doing this.... no correction, correction, correction for distance only or for progressive, toric lenses for astigmatism, etc etc. It would be impossible to quote a price for all these options, and laser procedures for torn retinas isn't even similar to cataract surgery. ibarra's suggestion to call the eye center in Chapala for an estimate seems to be the most prudent course of action if one really wants to get a realistic price range. 2 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
