Ferret
It was and is BAD in Acapulco... https://www.insidelakeside.com/t25579-another-bad-hurricane
HoneyBee
Thanks for the reminder. I do think that many also read TOB. (But am no longer a member because of the political bias 😬).
ibarra
Reading about it and watching it on the news is enough for me. It was horrible, to say the least.
Natasha
Horrible can't begin to describe it. Thank you Ferret for finally putting it up. I had hoped I wasn't the only one being awestruck in a BAD way by the total devastation. Poor people. Poor animals. Poor livelihoods of SO many. Anyone with vacation plans there in the foreseeable future better get cancelling them right away.🙀
Mostlylost
The live news is terrible. Even after the highway and airport were opened the government's response has been pathetic. There is no water, no food, no medicine, minimum power and cell service. There are bodies on some streets after 5 days. No Guardia or army presence to speak of. All stores have been looted. In prior hurricanes the federal government arrived quickly. Army trailers with kitchens, semis with food and water. Just a couple of weeks ago AMLO said he wanted to transfer the disaster response to the states. Guess he thinks it no longer is his responsibility. 2
Natasha
Gee, from Milenio News this a.m. on TV I got quite a different impression. You have to remember.... this is the FIRST EVER time a tropical storm Pacific side went from simply that to a Cat FIVE Hurricane , in 12 hours. Also the first Cat Five ever to make landfall at that speed. Damage was instantaneous, without warning. widespread, and knocked out everything. So it's not like other storms which, tho' ghastly, at least left a dgree of time to prepare. Also, it hit head-on instead of the usual "some" degree of angle. Aeromexico has started to fly stranded people out/ others in( essential workers?) twice a day after rigging up means to get around damages to control tower and main terminal. Autopista del Sol from Mexico City is open again. Lots of buses have started taking tourists to closest points for them to continue homeward journeys. Marines in charge of checking incoming trucks/trailers loaded with goodies so they can weed out non-essentials,making it easier to set up distribution of food, water, basic hygiene items etc. Some %age of cell and electricity up and running, and working on more. Some entity (army?? other??') has set up a post where people could get enough "bars" to quickly try and contact others within / outside Acapulco ( not 24/7 but something) and there's a registry where people searching family/friends can register from either end. Some areas up in the higher points etc still not reachable, but it's not like they were prepared for this. Of course it's not enough... never is..... and it's taking time. But I don't agree things are not being done as best they can. Edited October 28, 2023 by Natasha poorly worded and incomplete response 1
RickS
Any word as to how Zihuatanejo might have fared with Otis? It's about 150 miles up-coast from Acapulco. On the same note, has anyone "recently" (last 2-3 years) driven hiway 200 from Colima area to Zihaut?
Natasha
Zihuat is one place they're taking people to, so I'm assuming it's reasonably OK.

Mostlylost
There are dozens of utube videos available to watch. All the people interviewed have said "where is the government?" TV Azteca had reporters on scene next day. The governor is nowhere to be seen. Even reporters are questioning lack of action.
