Frijoles
I'm still not clear - was it on the cuota or the free road? Thanks.

AlanMexicali
I am taking a bus to Saltillo from San Luis Potosi very soon, possibly this Fri. morning in the very early AM hours. Where was it?
Jim Bowie
My understanding is that it happened on the 4 lane between Matehuala and Saltillo Toll Bypass. I don't know how close to the Toll Bypass.
Guest bennie2
this can/has happen in different locals/routes as well. if you want your border, you can keep border. just saying. complaining does not change what is.
Shelley Ronnfeldt
"if you want your border, you can keep border." What does that even mean?
Fred Habacht
I think it doesn't have to mean anything!
Ezzie
So it was on 57 between Saltillo and Matehuela???
maxx
yes, it was. It was on the free road. His car had American plates, but the others had Mexican plates, from what he could see. The one thing he was certain of was that everyone was robbed.
Intercasa
Was there an option to take a toll road to avoid that spot does everybody need to take the free road?
Ezzie
This is very strange - that is a very busy road with a lot of truck traffic and supposedly one of the safest roads through northern Mexico. It seems very out of place with all of the advice about sticking to the main roads and that Hwy. 57 is a very safe route. It would be nice to get further details such as time of day, where on the road (approx. distance from a major center), were the cars Federal Police vehicle, how many "robbers", etc.
J.Miller
More information would be good; We are leaving for the border tomorrow and although I am sure that the "bad guys" wouldn't operate on the same stretch of road for very long it would be helpful to have an update. Has anyone else had such an encounter in that area?

Yo1
There has been a lot of cartel activity in Saltillo the last year. Doesn't surprise me that they can operate without impunity in that area.

Were they on both sides of the highway? Would your friends care to post and answer some of our questions? TIA
cbviajero
Retenes falsos pop up in lots of places,my brother in-law who has been traveling on business 9 months out of the year for 15 years from Baja to Chiapas has run into quite a few, sometimes they shake him down, sometimes they give him a pass. RickS
"Was there an option to take a toll road to avoid that spot does everybody need to take the free road?" Actually on that part of the drive, Highway 57 is good 4-lane but is not toll. Just like one, but just not a fee.
slainte39
It would have to have been a quick operation and move on, as the volume of traffic on that road at that time of day would make a reten of longevity their worst enemy. It sounds more like bad luck than a continuously unsafe area as they would have to cover 4 lanes of traffic. How did they identify Zeta tattoos as I would think that would be something the general public wouldn't know about readily, unless of course, it was "ZETA". Maybe any tattoo was said to be that, by the perps, in order to get the victims "cooperation".

maxx
I can only tell you what was told to me. The reason I posted this was to warn people to be aware if they are traveling to the border. Please take it for what it is and no more than that.
