Eric Blair
I'm thinking that this will be a benefit to the police who will stop someone and say the car can be impounded, etc. A foreigner will probably not know the difference. Appreciate information. Thanks.
bmh
I have driven a Jalisco car in CHiapas for 20 years and no cop has ever question me although all my papers, INE and drivers license show I live down there..
CHILLIN
If you are stopped for out of state plates, and the officer states that is why they stopped you, that is a human rights violation, and the officer will be punished. If you choose to fly out of state plates, make sure the paperwork is impeccable. Show the tarifa hologram and a receipt from the state that it has been paid, and therefore up to date. You may not have import documents, but you are not required to carry them. Likewise, original factura. If the officer keeps insisting for these documents, tell him they are kept in my lawyers office, he will have to make an appointment. Give him your lawyers business card, and warn him or her a headsup. Even if they do pursue this, highly unlikely, it make take many months, or more likely never, for an appointment with your lawyer. The difficulty with out of state plates with customs or factura is getting insurance more than liability only. I sold my 4x4 truck to a friend and custom car collector. It is now a different color and has Jalisco plates, all over 1 weekend. It is a different world out there for people who know how to work the system and have experience, status and money. bmh
Chillin why are you complicating things?
CHILLIN
Because many people using out of state plates do not have an original factura or import documents. They cannot normally be legalised in Jalisco.
HoneyBee
Okay, a first time offender will generally get one year in jail, after that not sure since I never heard back from those caught a second time. (its a slow day in Santa Maria ☺️) 1
CHILLIN
One year for a customs violation - Get real, you wouldn't even get that smuggling heroin into Mexico. One and a half million"chocolate" vehicles on the road in Mexico, including 5 tonne trucks. Not worth the risk for a shiney new luxury car. But for transport to work and farm pickup trucks, definitely a blind eye right now. AMLO has promised a legalisation and amnesty. The third one in Mexico.
