It's Back!

Lirio is back in fairly large quantities all over lake in West Ajijic. Wonder what they will do and when they will tackle the problem this time around? Last time was a many months long nightmare because of the disagreements over how to attack the issue and the lirio exploded in growth and lake coverage. Dam releases brings water to the lake, but that is not all.

Those guys on the west side of the malecon in Chapala are actually chopping down the reed growth in order to create a swimming beach...or, at least, create something that looks more like a swimming beach. What they call lirio here are water lillies or hyacinths that actually float on the water. It gets a bad rap around here. If they just leave the lirio alone, it acts as shade, cooling the water and helping to prevent evaporation.

Alex, but you will not see the lake. Just lirio. The lirio overtook the lake before and as far I am concerned, I prefer to see water to weeds. It was a pleasure to see the lake clear again and it would be really disappointing to get it back. The lake was relatively clear of lirio for a number of years now..

The plan was to limit lirio to 14% coverage of the lake. It does what Alex says plus absorb pollution and provide breeding places for fish. It is good in limited quantities like so many other things

If you disagree with something someone else has posted, just posting something to the effect of "you don't know what you're talking about" is non constructive and tends to divert the threat into personal commentary.

As several of the posters did subsequent to Alex's post, the best way to disagree is to post your own view and why you have it as Islander and HarryB did.

Hiker's link from MexConnect, although ten years old, gives an excellent description of the water hyacinth and why containing it is important. I hope those of you, particularly poster Alex, who think it should just be left alone, take the time to read it and educate yourselves about this beautiful nuisance.

It appears that Ajijic-hiker does, indeed, know the difference between lirio and reeds.
