InChapala1
All wireless home security systems require a Wi-Fi connection, and many have a cellular backup in case the home loses internet service and/or power. Is it possible to connect such a home security system to one of the local cellular providers such as Telcel? how does one do that? Does the security system have a slot to insert a cellular SIM card? Does Telcel offer such a service? Thanks.
Mostlylost
Actually not all wireless security systems require a wi-fi connection,. Mine uses a landline to call up to 5 numbers. That being said You can lease a wi-fi router from Telcel that uses cell service for the internet connection . It is a 2 year contract and &299-$399 a month depending on plan https://www.telcel.com/personas/telefonia/planes-de-renta/tarifas-y-opciones/internet-en-tu-casa There are a couple of cheaper options that do not use the Telcel network, but in the lakeside area most areas they will have a very poor connection.
InChapala1
Agree, the wi-fi router from Telcel could be a backup in the event my Telmex internet goes down. But, unless the Telcel router is battery-powered or has battery backup, I’d lose internet service from both Telmex and Telcel in the event of a power outage. The security system I’m considering has battery backup and works off wi-fi, with a cellular backup in the event wi-fi goes down. I’ve also heard Telcel’s “internet-en-tu-casa” service is terrible , w download speeds of 0.5 mb Lakeside. Finally, I’m still learning about different security systems, but if yours is connected to a landline, wouldn’t that make it a wired system (vs wireless)? You've been listening to the wrong people again. My Telcel en casa internet gets 10 mgs and friends who use Telcel have similar or better speeds. Very reliable. You might look at a small battery backup unit that lasts several hours.
RickS
The Telcel En Su Casa device is totally dependent on what one's Telcel signal strength is INSIDE the casa. Typically not as good as it might be outside the casa. Can be moved around inside the casa.... near a window maybe.... to possibly get better signal strength. But in the end one should test inside their casa with their Telcel cellphone FIRST before trying their unit. Any unit for that matter. And as Mt Mama suggests, a small $50 UPS system (Steren?) will provide enough power for hours and hours on a small electronic device like a en su casa.

I get “internet-en-tu-casa” Telcel 7-8mb down. Depends on your location. Check the bars on your cell phone for a good indication of service where you live. My system is wireless. There is no wiring in the house to connect the sensors to the alarm central. If the system you select has a slot for a sim card then you can get a sim from Telcel that is the same as in their wireless modem.
InChapala1
Thanks for the UPS idea. I'll check Steren.
RickS
If not there, then surely Mercardolibre or Amazon Mexico...
KevinR
You could buy a basic LTE wifi router that accepts a SIM card… Use a basic Telcel prepaid plan for 150 peso/month… These routers are usually powered by a USB dongle so you could buy a simple power bank and daisy chain it to provide backup power in the event of a power outage… One caveat to this or any cellular solution is that the cell towers also get the power cut in a power outage… I live in downtown Aijijic and when the power goes out my cellphone loses its data… My guess is the cell towers go on battery backup and will only function for calls and not data… Next time you have a power outage try to use your phones data to see if it works…
