rufus
Sorry if you are bored. I found this to be a very interesting thread, not so much about the language as the personalities. When I was a kid in the US, the teachers used to hit kids for speaking any language but English. The Indian kids were always getting hit. Anyway, as a result, Spanish became a language that was only spoken amoung trusted friends and family. And since the language was learned without any instructions, people were illiterate and made a lot of mistakes. Cut us some slack! If you are understood, you are doing ok. Just say it like they say it, and you will get by. Rufus
carib
I think she is doing quite good. Considering this is not the language you learned since birth, it is my opinion that your effort is showing. Congratulations It is very difficult to hide where you are coming from. Ask me, I speak fluent Spanish and still people recognized I am not local. They even know exactly where I come from.
carib
We know you command the language. Enough. After the correction, you should congratulate this person. You won't shine brighter if you put her down. No soy maestra me puedo comunicar I'm not a teacher either, but these suggestions "sound" better to me. carib
There are so many ways o say the same thing. Here are some examples of Saluda a Pedro de mi parte: Dale mis saludos a Pedro. Enviale mis saludos a Pedro. Saluda a Pedro de mi parte. Dile a Pedro que le envio saludos. Saludame a Pedro de parte mia. Si ves a Pedro, dale mi saludo......etc and we can go on. The message is the same. <!--quoteo(post=106540:date=Jan 9 2009, 01:59 PM:name=irolbackwards)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (irolbackwards @ Jan 9 2009, 01:59 PM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=106540"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Saluda a Pedo <b>aparte</b> de mi porfa.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> <b>"Aparte"</b> de mi? <img src="http://www.chapala.com/webboard/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> The only way you will fool a native speaker is by not speaking! modeeper
IMO it's best not to rely on dictionaries. Nor to assume you know what in fact is almost impossible to know. Just because a Mexican guy says xxxx doesn't mean it's universal. The guy might even be from Chiapas, like my neighbor. He doesn't express himself anything close to a Tapatio. IMO most people have a bad habit: They listen as a means to be cued when it's their turn to talk. That lack of absorbing what's being said and the fact tone of voice means EVERYTHING to speaking and understanding. The perception of Gringo is automatically paired up with the national conception and cognition of what Gringos do and say. The mere fact you arrived by plane or motor home makes you a richie to 80% of the population. That makes you distant. The Mexicans are heavy into caballerismo, they'll smile and nod and laugh as if they got the joke. It's their nature to be pleasant. Another feature to keep in mind is that up to 1980 there was a law/norm that a child had to stay in school until he finished 6th grade. Now it's the 5th. So chances are good if you're talking to any random Jose or Maria they just might be on the edge of illiteracy. Plus, if that isn't shocking enough, students never fail here, they never replete grades, all marks given are at least a 6, no matter if they should have been a 1.2.3.4.or 5. KISS. I assume y'all know what that means.

modeeper
Like what, sit in front of my puter 24/7 chuggin cheap liquor? I don't care how old this thread is, Gringo. How old is Tale of Two Cities, The Bible? 160,000 views and you think you have the right to control or manipulate what is of interest to so many. And why on Earth would you post your phone number to the public? That desperate to snag a Peso, eh Gringo? hahahahahahaha

modeeper
765-4156 I'll keep this on file. A good way to learn well is to have a good references, especially one of verbs, like the 201, 301, 501 Spanish Verbs publications. Being able to conjugate verbs will make you a star. Apart from reciting poetry these verbs and the grammar that goes with it are the last obstacle. It's so easy to fall in the trap of learning just enough to get you through the day, then go slack because people actually understand you, so to speak. It's so easy to forget or discount how you really sound to a native speaker. If you're not literate you are illiterate. If you're happy with the mamas, dadas, googoos and, Me Tarzan You Jane, go for it. A past event prompted me to speak correctly. That's when someone once asked me, "How does it feel to be illiterate in your host country?"
