La Casita del Molcajete - Chapala

Carnivore

Recommended Posts

Over the past couple of years there have been various reviews on this restaurant and there appears to have been a continual decline from being:  "The very best" to "So/So" to "Never Again".  We've heard that the restaurant has new owners.  Any updates on the restaurant and their Molcajetes, and service, would be most appreciated.  For years, this dish has been one of our most favourite Mexican dishes but, at present from San Juan Cosala eastward to Chapala there is, to our knowledge, not a single restaurant that serves a respectable Molcajete.  We recently tried the restaurant at the foot of Morelos on the east side of the street facing the water in Ajijic (Opposite Ajijic Tango) and, sadly their Molcajete was a very poor representation that lacked ingredients and above all, authentic flavour.

Love the Molcajetes at the restaurant next to Cozumel--usually lots of patrons and free margaritas.  Cozumel seems to have improved under the new owners--last visit I was offered a complimentary and delicious bisque soup and Cozumels' molcajetes look very good.

The restaurant has not changed hands. The owner is also the owner of La palapa del Guayabo which has a different menu.

Personally in 20 years I have not seen any change in the food or service.

Always great service from Juan and his brother Armando as well as their other family members who work there.

Everyone has different tastes and ideas as to what a molcajete should be. (Actually molcajete is the name of the stone vessel and here most of them come from San Lucas Evangelista on the south shore of lake Cajititlán}

And as to adding condiments... That is why things like salt, pepper, sauces, etc are on tables in restautrants so customers can season their food to their individual liking.

Last June we went to La Casita de Molcajete on the Chapala malecon and had an excellent molcajete -- the best we had had Lakeside.  In addition we both had free wine with our entree.  Again, that was 7 months ago, so I don't know anything about possible change in ownership or management since then.
