MarkWebles
...and I need some scrap steel to work with. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I might find some? Any type will do: flat bar, square tubing, angle iron, plate. Light gauge, though, 3/16" max. The welder I'm using is only 110 volts, 80 amps. Thanks. johanson
Remember Mark that the voltage is not 110 volts here. In Mexico the voltage per law is 127 volts and may vary up to 10% therefrom. Right now my Kill-A-watt meter shows one phase in my house at 125.1 and going up and down by about 0.4 volts. The Radio Shack meter plugged into my second phase is less accurate and it reads about 128 volts. And where can you get scrap metal? I bet most of the local welders will have some. There used to be a welding shop on the Carrera west of Juarez in Ajijic on the mountain side. I do not know if it is still there or not.
ragtopman
If you want to try your hand at light gauge go to a body shop and get a used fender, if your learning and you can weld laps, butts, plugs with it you can do the thicker stuff. Isn't there a metal fab shop in San Antonio on the south side and then there is the metal shop west of Ajijic over by La Mesa Restaurant

MarkWebles
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. It turns out that a neighbour of ours has a bunch of miscellaneous steel pieces I can use.
