TelCel plans - a question about Internet time

So I have a need to get a smartphone... that is, something with Internet access, for one purpose really: the QR reader capability with the built-in cell phone camera. This is to help in real estate, where these days a lot of signage has the QR code so you can quickly get the specs on a house.

I've never used a smartphone here, because my feeling is that Internet access costs a good deal. My current cell phone, a Samsung that looks like a Blackberry, can of course get Internet access if I want it, but doesn't use "apps". I simply put 500 pesos on it at the Oxxo or somewhere, and I have the Amigos deal worked out, so I just use it until it needs to be replenished.

... but what would one go for in this new circumstance (a friend in real estate, not me, although I will want a similar phone)? Generally speaking, you can use wireless wherever you can tap into it for a lot of Internet-related stuff, but those who would be able to answer this question will know what I'm talking about. The agent needs live access, not waiting until returning to the office or home to check the 'Net.

Do you need a "plan"? Is intermittent Internet access expensive for someone who wouldn't otherwise care? does it just come off your 500 pesos.... etc?

I bought a Smartphone about 6 months ago. I am on the mid-size plan which costs $320 mas o menos per month. I get 250 minutes with 50 texts included. I have various apps on it, including Gmail, YahooITranslate, etc.

Fernanda at the Telcel office on the side street where the old casino was can give you the information you need. She is very knowledgeable and in my opinion gives great customer support...a commodity which is scarce here, in my opinion, except for you,, of course.

Buena suerte.

Some little Telcel stores will tell you you need a contract with Telcel to get Internet on a phone .... and you need to go to a Telcel office to set it up. True or not I don't know as I just dumped my 2 year contract that cost about 500 a month.

Telcel gives free phones with a 2 year contract. Lots of different plans if someone is gonna be around awhile. Don't let them give you a model from 3-4 years ago like they want to

No, I have found the plan to be more expensive than just adding time as I go. I have a data counter on my phone (NEXUS 4) and 1GB which has to be used within 30 days was was $329 (prepaid without a plan) and if I just add 400 pesos I can get about 1.6GB which I don't have to use in 30 days. I do NOT have to sign any contract or even tell them I am using data/internet. Unless you are watching lots of videos or are uploading lots of photos 1.6 GB should last longer than 30 days. Really the best thing to do is to add a data counter app on the phone to see which is the best way for you to go as we all use data differently.
