  1. I beg to differ, on two counts. First, I don't see much ignorance or apathy here. I do see a lot of holier-than-thou stuff, which really takes away from the experience for me. Second, social media like Facebook is far too scattered for anyone to focus. Chat boards and forums on many topics are instead huge and growing. You know there are even boards for families of prisoners who need help? Facebook and Twitter would be the death of them if they had to rely on those, but their own forums keep things on topic and helpful.
  2. Sorry, I would have assumed the poster was looking for answers from people who have had it done or would know where to look at lakeside. I kind of always assume they would have used Google first.
  3. I don't think anyone will be able to answere this question, for obvious reasons (although residency vs tourist is not an issue, because you won't be dealing with the government-controlled health services, obviously). But there are people on this board who have been to various local hospitals and labs (I have not) who would be able to provide you with contact information so you can phone them.
  4. Those who have lived in heavy snow areas, like Minnesota, don't much think of recreation centers as havens in winter. Getting to one is going to involve the parka, the hat, the boots, the scarf, the gloves, for you, for the kids, etc. There's a thousand other things, like trying to be on time for work, but this post is already overlong; still I've left some in, in case you want to keep reading. Then the warming up of the car, and the decision as to whether or not to buy a remote started. Then there is the scraping of the windshields and all the other windows, unfreezing the damn locks, unplugging the engine block heater, perhaps shovelling the snow or ice out of the driveway or parking area, shovelling the huge snowbank left by the city plow (if it's been by yet), dealing with the slippery streets, the sleet on the windshield, the :() drivers who forget how to drive every different season, and everything else that going somewhere.... even to the corner store... entails. Let's not forget to mention the approximately 6 months of doing this, day in and day out, and being cooped up in your house or apartment the rest of the time. It leads to actual cases of cabin fever, and there is no denying such a thing.
  5. Yes, but of course their signal has to come from somewhere. If you look at the variety of areas that they cover, it is clear that they most likely don't have a main broadcast centre in each place. They may have a main tower in each place, but the signal has to come from somewhere. They offer service in places where TelMex, Wizz, and iLox do not, so they can't be running off their backbone, which means most likely they are using satellite feed for their main source, and that satellite is being received by their main towers. Rod's own service was limited to areas within a specific range of his own towers.
  6. Hmmm. if I don't read a post or follow a thread, I don't actually know how important or boring it is. Therefor I don't know if I should read it or not, until I've read it. What I find interesting is, even though I was agreeing with bmh, now I'm getting comments as if I was arguing with cedros. Looks like I can't win either way.
  7. As I posted just before you, the question was using a VPN with Spiderweb. However, to follow up, since almost no one uses it and also this board, getting an opinion is going to be difficult. But yes, they do it with wireless antennae erected in various neighbourhoods. Someone once opined that the service is satellite-based, which makes sense because they cover such a wide area of outlying villages.
  8. And yet he never seems to get a warning. Interesting.
  9. Yes, you can use a VPN with any Internet service. Be advised, however, that VPN services can slow down the perceived speed by 60% and even more. So if Spiderweb is already fairly slow, and reports on this board in the past show that it can be, you may not get enough throughput to watch Netflix USA or whatever it is you want from a VPN.
  10. There are one or two "roaming" guys, for years now. They operate on the same principle as Spam email: they just keep coming over and over and over again until they get a hit. I can't count the number of times I've answered the bell to random gas guys... or picked up yet another business card thrown through the fence. They often seem to turn up when you actually need gas. They know this. My point being, your "intercept" was probably just timing.
  11. Well, exactly, and that's why so many people just buy a monthly paquete. Just walk into a corner store and re-up. Never worry about making payments from your bank too late, or billing getting mixed up or incorrect. No expats I know have a contract.
  12. It is a topic of daily conversation. But I agree with bmh... I would rather keep it that way: off the boards and maybe over lunch. This is a board for assistance, and constant ruminations about the rainy season and the lake level are pretty boring. Not to mention the fact that there is nothing we can do about it. Less worry means more happy, right?
  13. I was under the impression you needed a Mexican credit card for that. The truth is, I haven't checked for a number of years, of course. Can I ask how you pay, then, please?
  14. Here is what the CDC says: Air travel requires spending time in security lines and airport terminals, which can bring you in close contact with other people and frequently touched surfaces. Most viruses and other germs do not spread easily on flights because of how air circulates and is filtered on airplanes. However, social distancing is difficult on crowded flights, and sitting within 6 feet of others, sometimes for hours, may increase your risk of getting COVID-19. While that is a very mixed message, I think most people when talking about it don't get past the 'air circulation' part.
  15. It is going to depend on the flight, of course. I have a friend comiing out of TO to Guad and each time he comes the plane is packed. Earlier this year, people were more afraid to fly, contributing to the extra seating.
  16. For those that may not know, you can also buy a monthly "paquete" at any Oxxo, 7-11, and various other stores like WalMart. This is particularly good for those who don't want or don't have a Mexican credit card, required for cellular subscriptions. But I recommend, if you are just starting, to go to either the TelCel office or a store like the one above, to find out the pricing plans, because they change more often than they should, and because there are too many to list reasonably. I know there are members of this board who could give us a couple of examples. The paquetes include air time, long distance in Mexico, the US and Canada, and a substantial amount of Internet time, plus free Twitter, Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
  17. Also referred to as "acceptable use", and the similar "data cap", the policy is basically simply a ploy by Internet providers to get around local and federal laws and regulations, and to convince customers that they are justified in their charges. And they tack that policy onto every "unlimited" plan I've ever seen. I know nothing about Spiderweb. I do know that TelMex puts no data cap on their service, and nor does iLox... although maybe I just haven't used enough yet for them to freak out. And I do download a lot.
  18. Trevor Armstrong. All I know is a few blocks west of the plaza at 145Ramon Corona.
  19. Good thinking. I should do the same.
