MEXICO'S UNSETTLING SIDE

This story appeared today and it is disturbing to say the least. Yes, Latin countries (almost all) remain hopelessly discriminatory against women but for women to be imprisoned many years for abortions (and it many cases, merely the false belief that they had an abortion) is extremely troubling. And Mexico is not the worst of the lot. I recall reading an article several years about several young women in El Salvador (probably the worst in this group) doing 25 years in jail for having an abortion (it was not clear if the woman miscarried or not).

And at least in Mexico City, the laws are no longer being held hostage by superstition (the Catholic Church) so there is some progress. But Mexico still falls light years behind more enlightened countries like those in western Europe. (Yes, I am sure there are those of you that will disagree)Part of the problem in the other Mexican states is that the politicos are terrifed of losing their power to the modern political forces and are fighting back tooth and nail. And that is causing women to be easy targets. But poles in most of Latin America do reflect the trend toward greater choice. Most feel that abortion should be legal at least when the life and health of mother is in danger. Less agreement is seen when rape is viewed as the determining factor whether abortion should be legal.

Anyway, the article is quite fascinating.
