Spot
To Spencer:Writing for a friend who has a 1997 (1996 chassis), US plated Motorhome on a TIP since 2006. Has there been any discussion regarding motorhomes, by Aduana? He assumes that if it's not on the road, it's fine? What are the ramifications if it is driven? Any distinction made for Casa rodantas? Any ideas? Thanks for all of your help. And hope your feeling better.
Intercasa
Motorhomes might be easier as they have 10 year permits and the immigration thing only comes into the equation when the permit has expired and the immigration document is used to validate an expired permit. If there was a 10 year TIP from 2006 then they have until 2016 until it becomes an issue, however..... aduana has a new search engine to check TIPs and if the police have the ability to check and they start cross referencing people with their future immigration documents there could be a problem although that should not be a concern for a few years for them although could be a real concern for people right now with regular permits that have expired. GringoGreg
Hi Spencer, Thanks for your input into this question. Motorhome retirement is a particular problem with the new rules. Many people live in motorhomes in Mexico. Once they need to convert to permenente, they must leave the country with it regardless of the 10 year permit expiry date to remain legal. They then cannot bring the vehicle back into the country under any permit as a permenente. The problem is not solved by leaving and re-entering as a temporary resident. Most; it not all; who now live here in a motorhome don't qualify for the new income requirements. Getting rid of the foriegn plated motorhome is not a viable solution as the result is a disintigration of the entire retirement plan. Any suggestions on how to resolve this? Ezzie
Just brought in a travel trailer a couple of weeks ago for a retired couple who live Lakeside. They had no problem getting a TIP (if you call it that for a "casa on wheels") for a 10 yr. term. They currently have an FM3 and the expiry date of the TIP is not linked to the expiry date of their visas. I have the feeling it will remain in Mexico for a very long time since it has no motor!! cashncarry
Some people brought in motorhomes with only a 6 month or one year permit rather than getting the ten year permit..... Anyone interested in selling a u.s. plated motorhome, please e mail me and describe what you have cashandy@yahoo.com

Sure, their current motorhome TIP shows a 10 yr expiry date vs. the 1 year temporary resident expiry date, but if their INM permit expires or they change to the Residente Permanente, the motor home TIP becomes invalid. Aduana has ruled that Residente Permanente acts like Inmigrado for Aduana rules, so since Inmigrados cannot get TIPs for motor homes, then if they go to Residente Permanente, the TIP becomes immediately invalid. This means that the expiration date of the tip is tied to their INM visa - residency cards.
