See the post before yours. The geothermal production is so small that it must have gotten lumped in as "etc." with wind and solar. Of course renters are not going to do it but their landlords may. And budget driven people cannot. Those things go without saying. But, if you live in a big house with lots of perks that use a lot of electricity, then I'm assuming that you can also afford to put in solar. It's about priorities.

We've worked with quite a number of local renters and landlords, so FYI, don't count that out.     Those who are in a rental property long term, or plan to be in the area long term, often put in systems on their own, or the landlord does it, or thru a hybrid / cost share type arrangement.      Renters can also take a system that they own, with them, should they change rental homes; a solar PV system is fairly portable and there is nothing preventing it from being removed and re-installed elsewhere.

Not real estate, just a lot of electrical lighting (security), appliances, etc. I'd do whole-house electric if we could. While it's not for everyone, it really paid for itself super-quick. 

Oh, and I heartily recommend a solar heater, too.

Big house.... yes.  Lots of perks... not so much.  And CAREFUL daily management (lights off, appliances unplugged, etc etc) keep consumption low.

Previous landlord DID put in solar hot water when old tank failed. But when tenants pay the electricity, doubt there are many who would put panels in becasue they won't be the ones "saving".
