1 Day Covid Test Requirement for International Air Travel To US Begins Monday Dec. 6th

The one day rule applies to US Citizens as well as other travelers.   Either an Antigen test (fastest) or PCR test is needed.  It is not a 24 hour timeframe, it is anytime the day before you travel, or the day of travel, regardless of your flight time.

Shorter testing window coming next week
Unfortunately for travelers, pre-travel testing to fly back to the United States is about to get more stressful than ever under a new policy that’s about to take effect.  As of next week, travelers will have even less time to arrange for COVID-19 testing to fly back to the U.S. — regardless of vaccination status.

The new rule will require all travelers, vaccinated or not, to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken no later than one day before departure. This gives travelers less time to arrange for a COVID-19 test before their flights and can potentially complicate the plans of travelers with particularly jam-packed itineraries or those in more remote areas.

Most labs turn-around time is within a few hours for antigen tests.

I don't see this change from 3 days to 1 day as a major hassle here, other than many labs are closed on Sundays which will be an issue if you have an early Monday flight.

btw, CDC has announced the 1 day testing requirement begins for flights to US in Monday, Dec. 6th.

  • Bisbee Gal changed the title to 1 Day Covid Test Requirement for International Travel To US Begins Monday Dec. 6th

Looks like there will be a new form to fill out for travel to US.

From CDC website, https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/international-travel-during-covid19.html

Contact Information
   REQUIRED
All air passengers to the United States are also required to provide contact information to airlines before boarding flights to the United States. This strengthens a travel process already in place to rapidly identify and contact people in the U.S. who may have been exposed to a communicable disease, such as COVID-19. Access to travelers’ contact information will allow U.S. federal, state, and local health departments, and agencies to share appropriate health and public health information necessary to help keep the public safe.

This will be tough for travelers coming a long way like from Asia with layovers. Could take longer than 1 day. Australia is a day ahead of us. Could cause a problem.

Timing is linked to your departure date of flight, not arrival in US.

The time frame for the test (1 Day) could be problematic. I have flown into the USA multiple times since they required the 72 hour antigen test; the people at the airline check in have been rigid on the 72 hour timestamp of the test result.  So does 1 day become 30 hours if you are tested the day before at 10 am for a next day 4 pm flight ? I suspect this will be at the discretion of the airline agent.

It was 3 days, now it's 1 day.  NEVER was 72 hours, and it's not 24 hours now.

Test anytime the day before travel is good ALL day for your flight the next day.

CDC Guidelines are found here https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/international-travel-during-covid19.html

The test requirements include taking it within one calendar day and is not limited to within 24 hours of your departure. This means that passengers will be able to take their test at any time during the day before their flight, no matter what time their flight departs.
