I am looking for a doctor who does cataract surgery here in lakeside.I do not want to go to Guadalajara.I want someone who does the surgery here.Like at San Antonio Hospital

The proper facilities are not here even at SAT so you will have to go to Guadalajara and that's the reality of it. But  Ophthalmologist do have offices here and can check you. Dra. Claudia did mine ,my wife's and many of our friends in her mother's clinic in Guadalajara.

Dr. Claudia...no contest!!! All your pre and post tests at thier office above the immigration building as you enter Chapala from the carretera going east. You will go to the Eye Center in Guad. for the surgery, a state of the art eye clinic. You will need a driver to take you and wait till the surgery is done, all including the transport under 4 hours.

topography is done in GDL also, prior to surgery.

I was having an eye problem some years after the original cataract surgery done by Dr. Vargas, who is deceased.  Yesterday I saw Dr. Claudia, got the answers and was very impressed by her and with the testing equipment in the office.

The only problem I encountered were the many stairs to reach the Eye Center.  There is no elevator available for those who need one.

I had cataract surgery done on both eyes by Dr. Claudia about 2 years ago. Only had to go to Guad. twice, once each time for both eyes. Everything else was done at the office/clinic in Chapala that has a lot of very impressive equipment as another poster said. Do not know what topography is but sure that it was done at the Chapala clinic. Or maybe at the same time of the surgery in Guad.

it must be done to measure for lenses. they have that equipment at the GDL clinic. Carefully done topography assist one to select the best lenses. For me it meant trifocals and no glasses.

The last time I saw Dr. Pinto he told me that a bunch of local ophthamolgists got together to build a Lakeside eye surgery facility, but the government of Jalisco was against it and told them they would never get a license.

Nice story   Doubtful it's true.   More likely that for the number of eye surgeries they could do lakeside the cost of equipping the operating center, and staff needed would not be economically viable. I have one family member who does 3 or 4 eye surgeries on the same day in GDL.

Does anyone know what the total cost is to have cataract surgery done on both eyes by            Dra. Claudia?   Does she do both eyes at once or not?

Muchas Gracias!

Don't walk, run from any ophthalmologist who would do both eyes at the same time.

A numbers of years ago I was attending IMSS and the Dr recommended surgery to remove cataracts. Problem at that time there was only very 3 machines available, 1 was waiting repair, 1 was reserved for children, so long wait times.

Long story short , the Dr recommended I go to a private clinic in Guadalajara and he would do the 2  eyes at the same time. His logic , save me going twice and incuring double expense for him and the Anaesthetic. The clinic was extremely busy and what doubts.  lingered soon evaporated.

The procedure was successful and follow up care excellent. About this time I began to use more Dr and Specialist in Guadalajara and got more exposure to the many hospitals,  both very affordable.

Another vote here for Dr. Claudia. My husband and I each had both eyes done (each eye on a separate day... she will NOT do both at once). As others have said, preliminary work is done in the Chapala office, which is a problem if you can't climb stairs. If stairs are an issue, I assume she could do the preliminaries in Guad, where the surgery is done, but you'd have to check with them.

You may not want to go to Guad, but consider this... how much is your eyesight worth? Cataract surgery isn't something you want to go bad, so it's critical to have the best care possible, and having somebody drive you to Guad a few times to get that is a SMALL price to pay for having things done correctly! We had a neighbor who had her cataract surgery done by another (NOT Dr. Claudia) surgeon who some people have had good luck with. That doctor messed up her eyes so badly that nobody here could repair the damage. She ended up having to sell her house and move back to the US for specialized work so she could have somewhat normal vision again. I cringe every time I see people recommend the doctor who damaged her eyes, but sometimes it works. Beware! I have since heard other word-of-mouth horror stories about that same doctor. With the strong libel laws here in Mexico, you are not likely to find published negative comments about BAD doctors, but it's helpful when you find so many positive reports about a GOOD one! Pay attention, and don't cut corners when it comes to the possibility of losing your vision. (And, no... don't PM me for a name since I would be concerned about those same libel laws myself. Just pay attention to the positives!)

By the way, we were told that there's a law requiring cataract surgery NOT be done on both eyes at once, just in case something were to go wrong... you wouldn't want to endanger both eyes at once. It's a little inconvenient having to mess with one corrected eye and one uncorrected for a few days between, but it's for the best. Grin and bear it. Best of luck on your research and eventual surgery.

My husband was seen In Chapala by Dra. Claudia's sister, Dra. Paulina last Tues 16th. (Dra. Claudia does not personally come out here any more). He needs both eyes done.... in Guad where the fabulous equipment is. Well.... equipment out here is pretty space-age too!

One booked for Tues 23 and  second one Tues 30th.  Cost for BOTH is $70,000 in his case. I stress this because he has an additional problem in one eye that will not be addressed, but may (???) affect overall price.  Process is (1) you book appt. out here with Dra. Paulina (comes Mon-Wed-Fri to Chapala). Follow-ups (day after, then a week later, then a month later etc.) are done out here or mroe if needed.

I suppose you COULD go to Guad for diagnostic appt. but so much easier here. Might be faster to book there?????

The surgery is done at their specialized clinic in Guadalajara owned by their mother who is also an optha, It has become a world wide practice to do cataracts one at a time because of the many serious problems that arose doing both at once.

That's absolutely not true. My husband and I had both eyes done at the same time. Excellent doctor and excellent results. Also...her sister, Dra. Paulina, is great, too.

ETA:  I had my eyes done about 3 years ago, so the policy on one or two eyes may have changed. Also, my eyes were $94,000 pesos but that was because I had trifocals (love 'em!) and one special lens because of bad astigmatism. Frankly, it was worth every penny and I'd do it all again in a NY second.

You are better off to go to Dr. Claudia who will do the surgery in Guadalajara. What is a few stairs?

No legit optha including dr. Claudia's family will do both at once anywhere in the entire first world anymore.

One reason I've read to NOT do both at once is in case of a bad result in first one (including blindness) you have the option of what to do re: remaing eye with sight... poor as it may be!
