Distilled water

Recommended Posts

I’m wondering where I might be able to buy distilled water for use in a humidifier. Any idea what it costs?  Filtered or purified water will work but requires more frequent cleaning. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

The filtered water sold in garafons has been run through a reverse osmosis and is essentially distilled.

I don’t think “essentially distilled” quite cuts it for my purposes. The concern is calcium and other mineral buildup rather than simply bacteria. Thanks for the suggestion. BTW, I suspect Arrowhead has an even greater likelihood of containing unwanted minerals unless it specifically says “distilled.”  The water used for batteries and irons sound about right.

RO water can not be called "distilled" because it isn't. The same result is obtained by a filter. RO was developed as a cheaper way to get pure water for small laboratories.

Take a few drops of water and place it on a small mirror. In a few hours you will see how much minerals are in the water you tested.

Walmart sells it- Agua Desmineralizada, Great value brand. Many (most?) garrafons are not purified by reverse osmosis. Don't use it in your iron.

I have looked in the area where they sell irons, in the laundry soaps area and in the drinking water area several times and cannot find it. Do you remember where it was in Walmart that you saw it?   Mucho gracias.

No it isn't distilled. It depends on what you are using the water for. Reverse osmosis usually has more minerals in it so it is tastier. Distilled water usually has fewer minerals so it is better for your iron but tastes flat. Very different processes.

Which companies do that? None that I have toured. Reverse osmosis filters should have have a pore size around 0.0001 micron. It takes a lot of force to move water through holes that small.

Actually, it does, as RO removes the minerals you are concerned about and will save you a lot of $$ too.

RO does not remove all the minerals only those that don't pass through the filter (membrane) but distiled water does as it is condensed steam.

No Shinola! Must you drivel on every thread?

I have to reply to nonsense. RO is filtration whereas distillation is condensation of steam. Think about it. Water has suspended and dissolved impurities. RO removes suspended material and some of the larger disolved ones, wheras distillation removes all impurities. When you use a steam iron steams comes out of the iron and leaves minerals in the iron.

No. Things get moved around so you have to ask.

Not the same results but similar.

Not usually. RO is used in homes rather than distiallatio because Distillation as a process is simply too slow, cumbersome, and inaccessible as a method of home water purification except in emergencies

I think the point was that RO water readily sold locally in 22 liter garafons for drinking has essentially had enough of the minerals and other crap removed to be used in a humidifier without clogging it up over time. I'm pretty sure that Angus knows the difference and was merely offering the O.Duck a workable, 'cheap and available solution to his problem.

I stand corrected. Thanks.

I had forgotten to mention that Farmacia Guadalajara and Cristina sell smaller bottles (500ml?). But I also don't recall the prices.

I'd assume all Farmacias carry some. At farm Guad, it was behind the counter.
