Dr. Juan Garrido Cataract Surgery

Recommended Posts

I had a very good experience (so far) having cataract surgery done by Dr. Juan Garrido at Puerta de Hierro Sur hospital. I was given a choice of practically any intraocular lens I decided upon. The cost varied accordingly. The cost of monofocal lenses which most people get was 35,000 pesos per eye. These are usually for average distance viewing and reading glasses are used for close up viewing. After some research I decided on Zeiss (Lisa) multifocal (trifocal) lenses. The cost for everything excluding my initial examination (900p) and analytic measurements (1200p), was 42,000 pesos per eye, a very reasonable expenditure. I had both eyes done, 2 weeks apart in March. I can see the trees at the mountain tops and read without glasses. My last eye exam I had 20/20 vision.

The examination process when I first attended Dr. Garrido's office was to first, have magnified (microscope) photos taken of my eyes. Then I went into the doctor's office and he examined my eyes with another microscope and performed a vision test as well as a lens prescription should I decide on glasses. Post surgery, I went into yet another room where he examined my eye(s) with another scope which interfaced with a camera and large monitor so we could see the lens placement.

The surgery takes place at the same hospital. After checking in with admissions, I was taken to a private room where I put on a hospital gown and had the IV line for sedatives put in. The surgery caused no discomfort whatsoever.

Dr. Juan Alberto Garrido Camelo (Juan Garrido)
Cirujano Oftalmologo - Ophthalmologist Surgeon
Ph: 331-593-2102  Email: drjgarrido@gmail.com
Hospital Puerta De Hierro Sur - 10th floor

Tell him Tim sent you, as I'd like him to know that I am happy to refer others. [no kickback; I promise]

The topographical(?) (sizing) testing of my eyes was done in the same hospital by Dr. Carlos Munoz on the 4th floor, who is also an ophthalmologist surgeon. This is done for the sizing and type of lenses to be used. I believe the cost of this ranges from 1200 pesos [which I paid] to 3000 pesos. His phone number is 331-655-0544. He is also an excellent physician.

I take it that you did not have any astigmatism ......

I have astigmatism but not severe. I'm also nearsighted. I have never had glasses or contact lenses that were made to correct the astigmatism at all, and I can see just fine. I realize this likely wouldn't be the case if the astigmatism was worse than mine.

Yes, astigmatism 'blurs' one's vision.... creates two visions apart from each other. The worse it is the farther the 2 visions are apart. Not fun. Yours is obviously 'mild'.

Astigmatism is corrected (in contacts for example) by using a 'Toric lenses'...slightly weighted on one side to make/keep it aligned on the axis your eyes need for correction. Same for cataract lenses replacement if one has astigmatism and wants to correct the astigmatism with the inserted lenses vs. wearing glasses (to correct any existing/residual  astigmatism). That's what I had a couple years ago with success. I still have to use 'cheaters' for reading. Otherwise my vision after cataract surgery, using a toric lenses insert, is 20/20.

I don't know if the technology is there yet to get the multifocal lenses timjwilson got AND correct for astigmatism yet.

I read a fascinatung book on vision years ago. He explained what mostly causes astigmatism. The human eye  is more or less designed to look at things straight on. We look to the side or up and down, but only briefly. If we really want to look at something that's not in front of us we turn our heads.

Forcing the eye into a position it's not designed to be in for long periods of time deforms the eyeball and results in astigmatism. A really common example, which you'll see many children do, and which I certainly did, being a little bookworm, is lying on your stomach with the book flat on the bed, your chin propped on your hands, and reading like that. So the page isn't in front of your eyes, you have to look down, forcing the eyeball into an unnatural position. Doing this a lot eventually permanently changes the shape of your eyeballs.

I had cataract surgery in both eyes (2 weeks apart) by Dr. Claudia and would highly recommend her also. Her and her family (mother, sister and brother-in-law) are based  at the Eye Center in Guadalajara, but have a Chapala office above the immigration building in Chapala, mountainside a little distance the light at the main intersection. All the initial examinations are done there with the surgeries at the very impressive Eye Center. I did not realize how bad my sight was until after the surgeries...day and night!!! I did have astigmatism to some extent in both eyes, which the surgery does not correct. After the surgery, they gave me a complete exam and prescription for new glasses. I could have chosen bifocal but prefer separate reading and  everyday glasses. A whole new world!!!

She did me to my satisfaction  re: cataracts, and I  still use trifocals because I like them and they are glass safety lenses for moto riding[which I hopefully will be able to do again] and my shop work.

Cataracts come upon you slowly...first I could not drive at night because the oncoming traffic lights and roadside lighting dazzled my eyes and blinded me. Then I notices that the typeface on the magazines and books I was reading was diminishing in size even with reading glasses. This is a sort of film that slowly envelopes your eyeballs and you hardly notice until it is almost too late. All this changed dramatically with the surgery by Dr. Claudia and her team. I implore anyone with these symptoms to get it checked out immediately, not by a regular optician but a specialist in this condition as mentioned in this chain.

Are you saying the 42,000 p cost included the fees for Puerto de Hierro Sur Hospital ??

If so, that is a pleasant surprise.  I had laparoscopic duo hernia surgery there and I got swindled by the hospital.   It was 149,000 p just for the hospital and that was for one day in and out-patient stay.   Based on that experience, I would never use that hospital again.

Yes that was all inclusive; hospital, surgeon, assistant, anesthesiologist. It was less expensive than an eye clinic and I thought the pre-examination was more thorough than a 2nd opinion I got. In the unlikely event I had a reaction to the drugs used, I was already at a hospital.

Yep, gringo pricing.  NO in-and-out surgery with no overnight in a Mexican hospital's surgery room.... hospital only!.... is going to cost $7,500US.

I got a fair price in Mexico city for a complex hip replacement, 20 days in hospital, x-rays, ultrasound, PT twice daily for just under 20k USD.

Twenty days in the hospital after a hip replacement is unknown here.  Usually much less than a week in the hospital then discharge to a "nursing" home where you begin to move around with help and walk further each day.  Depending on your progress only a couple of weeks in the care home with PT

.

Well can't second guess what Tim might mean by a 'complex' hip replacement.  BUT today's hip replacements... in the US..... using the anterior approach, they have one up on their feet the day-of. Home the next day getting PT daily. For a 'normal' hip replacement it's not rocket science any more. (The old 'posterior' approach, much more pain and rehab as they destroy muscle and ligaments)

I have Arthrogryposis and had to do a worldwide search for a surgeon willing and capable to take it on. The surgeon in Mexico City who operated on me is among the best in the world. I have had approximately 40 orthopedic surgeries.

My post was only regarding the cost for so many days and specialized care.

I have never met Tim, but what a story about hope and perseverance. Bad luck with a childhood disease, battles to regain his mobility, battles to recover his full vision, and now he has found himself safely in Mexico, a country with unlimited sights, sounds, smells, tastes and caring people. A digital salute, my amigo.
