Jim Bowie
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/mar/28/mexico-covid-death-toll-rise-60-percent Mexico’s government has acknowledged that the country’s true death toll from the coronavirus pandemic now stands above 321,000, almost 60% more than the official test-confirmed number of 201,429. Mexico does little testing, and, because hospitals were overwhelmed, many Mexicans died at home without getting a test. The only way to get a clear picture is to review “excess deaths” and review death certificates. On Saturday, the government quietly published a report based on those figures, which found there were 294,287 deaths linked to Covid-19 from the start of the pandemic through 14 February. Since 15 February there have been an additional 26,772 test-confirmed deaths. The higher toll would exceed that of Brazil, which has the world’s second-highest number of deaths after the US. The Johns Hopkins coronavirus tracker puts Brazil’s toll at about 307,000 and the United States’ at 548,000, but Mexico’s population of 126 million is far smaller than those of either of those countries. AlanMexicali
So Gatell was lying all along. Some people wanted him to resign because of his pathetic performance last year. He should have been fired and replaced with someone with intergrity because of the immense importance of the task at hand. IMO

He should have been fired long ago, but his fairly recent response as to why he wouldn't prohibit non-essential travel, because "Sick people don't travel" really took the cake. How does he think the virus became a pandemic, just sprouted wings and flew? Can he be that stupid, or does he just think everyone else is? AlanMexicali
All the recent politicans here think everyone is that stupid, obviously. They will probably keep the federal majority and pick up some governors and municipal presidents in June. If so it sort of proves they are right. Then no stopping them.

If they are democratically elected, should they be allowed to serve, or removed because they are liars and stupid. Democracy sucks!!!.....unless it is only participated in by the intelligent, educated, and moral elite. It seems a lot of people are unhappy with the present system. Mainecoons
Getting back to the topic and suggesting that maybe, just maybe, government can't fix every problem that arises, exactly how has Mexico arrived at these "new" figures where it is readily admitted most were not tested, died at home and suffered from may other issues of diabetes, bad diet, gross obesity, very old age, etc. Even at that, after one year and with all these associated medical issues you are talking 0.26 percent allegedly died of covid. AlanMexicali
Excessive deaths that were not in the total death tolls for the last several years. Funeral excessives, crematorium excessives, cemetary excessives, moseleum excessives, ICU bed excessives, many thousands of Drs., nurses, medical facility administrators, ambulance EMTs' testimones, investigative journalists' articles and documentation, etc. tell of the government's coverup. Need more than that?
Mainecoons
2 hours ago, AngusMactavish said: Or maybe governments lead by poor leadership can't because many countries have. Have they really? And at what cost? And how many REALLY died of covid? It is certainly unrealistic to expect a country with very poor general public health, very limited medical resources, large often uncooperative rural populations and very dispersed, corrupt and incompetent governance to be some sort of covid star. A Mexico is not going to be a South Korea under any circumstance. Just not going to happen no matter how much one complains. One needs to accept the reality of where they are at or go someplace different. Is it better in SE Asia? Otherwise if one is going to remain where one is at, and it is among the less competent, one must expect to rely mainly on themselves for protection. Or one could stop being stampeded by hysterical media with an agenda and realize for the most part if one is an expat taking the basic precautions, one's likelihood of getting covid is damned small, almost microscopic, and start living again. Make your own choice and let others make theirs. 1

I don't know where you come up with your stats. Worldwide Covid death rate stands at 3%, Mexican death rate at 10%. And ".26 percent" is .0026. 4th grade math class refresher: When you express a percentage as a decimal, you don't use the word "percent " after it. It's either/or. As in 2.6 percent, not .26 percent.
AndyPanda
1.0% means 1 percent. 0.26 means, obviously in this case, .26 of one percent. Oh, and I don't care if his figures are correct are not. Pre-kindergarden refresher: be polite.
