Dostortas
Canadian government has suspended all flights to and from Mexico and the Caribbean starting January 31 until April 30 on Canadian airlines.
John Shrall
It's even worse considering all of the Canadian visitors currently all over Mexico. Will there be a mad dash to return by Saturday evening or will they stay until this order is lifted? Canada to quarantine travelers, suspend flights south - ABC News (go.com) Starting next week all International flights from Mexico and the Caribbean must land at Ottawa, Vancouver, Montreal or Calgary. Each person returning from non-essential travel will be tested. Arriving passengers must quarantine in a supervised hotel for 3 days awaiting test results at their expense. The cost is $2000 to be paid in advance. It covers testing and all the precautions hotels need to make to protect staff. If negative results in say 2 days, people may go home and quarantine there for remainder of 14 days. Anyone with a positive test must quarantine at a designated government facility. They are making allowances for returns to Canada to continue after this Sunday but probably not for very long. To be announced. Might be a mad dash for tomorrow though, to avoid the quarantine hotel part of the requirement......

John Shrall
The article says that the date the PCR test on arrival and forced internment if a positive result is returned is to be announced opening a window for a less costly return. This reminds me of March 18 2020 or thereabouts where all flights from Mexico to Canada ceased. There was a mass exodus at that time. Bisbee Gal
Trudeau says main reason is to stop the new variants. For sure these variants are in the US, but he's not banning flights to/from there.
Ferret
Yeah. But he should ban flights to and from the U.S.

Why did they not give a week's notice? They're not going to believe a test not administered in Canada. For your, roughly they estimate, $2000 Cdn you will stay in an approved hotel, get food, a PCR test and stringent security. If you test negative you will be allowed to quarantine at home under strict observation. If not, you will quarantine in an approved government facility. Better stay in Mexico. " Tam, Canada’s top health official, said that security contractors will be going door-to-door to check on returnees who are isolating at home. The move to require a hotel stay upon return would discourage vacations as people would not want to have to quarantine at a hotel at their own expense upon return. “It’s excellent. It’s a shame it’s this late. This is something they could have done ages ago,” said Dr. Andrew Morris, a professor of infectious diseases at the University of Toronto and the medical director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Sinai-University Health Network." Bisbee Gal
Unless/until the US bans flights to/from Mexico, couldn't Canadians fly from MEX to the US, then to Canada? Yes they'd have to get a PCR test, 72 hours prior to departure on Canadian leg.

From the ABC article: "Trudeau said in addition to the pre-boarding test Canada already requires, the government will be introducing mandatory PCR testing at the airport for people returning to Canada." I understand that as they accept (believe), a test administered outside of Canada to let you fly in. The second PCR would be confirmation, would it not? TelsZ4
It would be more helpful if posters would read and re-read the news reports before rushing to see if they can be first to post on here with the news. The news report states: “All international flights will have to land in Vancouver Calgary Toronto or Montreal”. OTTAWA is not mentioned. 1

They would not have had enough time to get the test results before they board.

Natasha
This taken from global news.ca (on line edition): Prime MinisterTrudeau announced that Air Canada, WestJet, Sunwing and Air Transat have all agreed to cancel air services to “all Caribbean destinations and Mexico,” starting Sunday. The cancellations will continue until April 30, Trudeau added. They will be making arrangements with their customers who are currently on a trip in these regions to organize their return flights,” he said. Trudeau also announced a new mandatory PCR testing requirement at airports for people returning to Canada. He said that while these travellers wait for this COVID-19 test result, they’ll be forced to quarantine for up to three days at a designated hotel – on their own dime. Trudeau added that the cost for this is “expected to be more than $2,000.” “Those with negative test results will then be able to quarantine at home under significantly increased surveillance and enforcement,” Trudeau said. “Those with positive tests will be immediately required to quarantine in designated government facilities to make sure they’re not carrying variants of potential concern.” Meanwhile, the Public Health Agency of Canada said Friday the federal government is turning to private security firms to help enforce the 14-day mandatory quarantine and conduct in-person compliance visits.

Dostortas
So I wonder what happens for the east coasters, if you can only fly into Montreal and you test negative after 3 days, are you released from hotel quarantine to continue the rest of your journey home and then continue to quarantine at home? I’m thinking no but who knows, time will tell I guess. I wouldn’t want to quarantine in a hotel for 2 weeks, you can’t even open a window in most places anymore. It would be a rough 2 weeks if you can’t return to your home to complete quarantine. It’s going to be a hard winter season for those here in Mexico that depend on tourism for income. Here’s hoping all these worldwide measures are successful and the cases start decreasing.
