Classic 1000 Island Dressing?

I don't know about the U.S. experience, but maybe other Canadians remember Kraft 1000 Island dressing back when it was the best? I used to buy it in bulk from Costco, and it was amazingly creamy and rich; no bite to it, no tangy aftertaste, but smooth, thick, restaurant-style indulgence (as opposed to the vinegary stuff you'd get in the smaller bottles sold for family consumption).

It's been years since I've tasted anything but the vinegary version, but I'd love to find something here that replicates that creamy, luscious taste - I even used to use it on pizza! Can anyone recommend a brand here that might come close? You know how these things sometimes come to mind and then they haunt you?

I wonder why, when someone asks the simple question of "where they can buy" a food item, someone ALWAYS has to suggest that they make it themselves?  Most people who are familiar with the internet already know where to find a recipe for just about anything, so the suggestion is just a bit ...uh...insulting to the O.P.'s intelligence.

If you can't find it, the only other way is to make it yourself. Nuthin' wrong with that. I used many recipes from Top Secret Recipes when I first moved to Mexico because I simply couldn't find some things here. IF it's available here, somebody will post where.

I've never found a fat free recipe that tasted the way it should so, for the above recipe, I would just use your favourite chosen mayo. Suerte!

OP again:

I've been "making my own" for the 20+ years I've been in Mexico and I'm #!&*@% SICK of it! (Shriek!)

Ok, needed to be said. That whine's been building over a lot of those years. But having voiced my frustration, I did copy the Todd Wilbur recipe (thanks, Ferret), though I have my doubts, since he says cloning "a best selling fat-free 1000 Island" and that's a far cry from the original. I have to question whether the mayonnaise is the only difference but it's not hard, so definitely worth experimenting.

And many thanks to the one person who actually suggested a brand to check out, which was my original question. I keep seeing that Ken's Steakhouse 1000 too, and wondering, but it's just too expensive to buy on spec.

And BTW, Fat is no longer "the F-word" if you follow a low carb lifestyle; it certainly adds, in terms of flavour.

** How funny - the post with Ken's showed up as I was writing this. Thank you!

not what the poster wanted and made abundantly clear not only by gringals post but also THE ORIGINAL POSTER

Reality check! What one wants and one gets can be entirely different.  Besides, neither one are moderators.

I doubt either one will go to the MP and file a denuncia as someone else may use the verboten information that offends the virgin eyes of a few.

What about your many opinions???   No one is clamoring for them.

My comment was not intended to be taken as a serious complaint, but just as a reflection on the numerous times someone asks the simplest of questions and inevitably gets the same non-answer.  Reality check?  That's all it was intended to be, and just about the last thing I'd want in my world would be trying to moderate a forum with so many cranky posters!😄

I get you gringal, and all I was saying is.....someone wants a salad dressing they haven´t had in 20 years but want it to be in Ajijic already prepared, or they want an A/C specialist in Chapala and some one says " I know of one in GDL", what´s the harm? People do that all the time in normal face to face conversations. It´s just some people try to grade these informal conversations like they are some kind of college entrance exams.

I would hate to sit down to any kind of dinner conversation with some people on this board as every word would have to be weighed. The penalty for digressing would certainly be severe if only it was humiliating.

Try the Russian dressing. It is still a large portion of mayo and ketchup, but adds prepared horseradish and chile hot sauce for a tiny spicy bitr.

Whereas commercial Thousand Island adds sweet, green pickle and tries to find ways to reduce the high cost mayo portion. Sugar free catsup, fat reduced mayo - blasphemy!

I'm sure I have a very good looking recipe for Russian dressing in one of Diane Kennedy's books.

well i guess you are a popular guy. because youve managed to warp a topic into something else and insult me while trying to help and keep it on the path. good for you. but that kind of popularity escapes me and you can keep it.

your earlier comment about what someone wants versus what they get is simply ludicrous. how about i tell whoever fixes your car to forget what you want fixed andwork on something else

thank you CHILLIN for offering something helpful.

I am what I am, but your logic on analogies escapes me and you can keep it. The ludicrous thing, is comparing the work a mechanic is asked to do on a vehicle to an informal conversation on a web board. One is money and essential, the other, exchanging ideas. And I don´t know how I insulted you anymore than you insult others with your comments.

Please respond so that I can have the last word.....LOLOL

logic? in your advanced years i guess you are no longer capable of understanding a well constructed grammatical piec of information. subject vs object my friend. subject vs object. my comparison is not about the THING. its about the emptiness of your construct. if you would pay attention instead of trying to sound smart by firing from the hip maybe youd notice

go ahead. get the last word. thats all your interested in really. isnt it.

I´ll make it short........! YEP !    😀
