Any recent experience with Hospital San Antonio?

Recommended Posts

The last time I was there, it was still a "work in progress" as to specialists and some equipment.

Any indications on overall ? I don't have insurance other than Seguro Popular (if I still even have that).

On topic replies appreciated.

Thanks.

Eric, I go to the Hospital San Antonio quarterly for my quarterly physical. When doing so I only visit my GP. Doctor Carlos Garcia, I understand that more test gear is now in place. There is a Doctor there who supervises EKGs and other tests, the name of whom I do not know. Dr Garcia Garcia is the heart specialist. There are two orthopedic surgeons, a father and son team whose last names are both Dr. Gonzales. Sadly I do not know the names or the specialties of the other doctors who practice medicine there, nor do I know the types of test equipment they have at the hospital

You could find out more by calling the following hospital telephone number: 376 765 4805

That  is correct widesky.  But they took the old number from the old clinic with them to the new Hospital. It is the number I use when scheduling an appointment with a Doctor at the new hospital

Likely these aren’t happening at the moment  but they are happy to give you a tour and answer any questions. visit and judge for yourself.  it’s a privately facility so all services are out-of-pocket.  seguro popular ,or whatever it’s  called now, will not pay.

It's a super facility to have here and limits the need on some occasions to go to Guadalajara some of my doctors have privileges there and the only affiliate I choose to see at HSA are Emergency docs and the Orthopedic Surgeon,Dr Gonzales Sr.. I've been there 3 times for treatment and my wife once. Once each for overnight. My wife 3 nights. Food was good as hospital food goes.

Thanks all.

Might there be available a fee schedule for both the doctors and procedures.

Probably best for me to go there when it seems safer to go out.I'm going to look at the numbers and not what the politicians say who seem to cater to where the $$ is.

My wife insists on going for a dental procedure in Ajijic a week from Wednesday, come hell or high water.

The four words I hate to use to someone I like/love are: "I told you so."

If you have insurance in the states they will check to see if it covers you here. If it does you can sign up.for their service and doctor visits are only 100 pesos. The problem I encountered is there aren't many specialists working there now. It's good for general care though.

Did you check with your own specialists whether they have privileges there. Two of mine have.

Does Dr. Gonzalez, Sr. - the ortho surgeon, still have office hours on Fridays?  He did my emergency hip replacement almost 12 years ago and I need to check in with him every so often, haven't done it in a few years, haven't had any problems.

Yes, Gonzalez Sr. sees patients two days a week there and does surgeries there also. His son Gonzalez-Ross who is the back/spine specialist sees patients two days a week there also and does surgeries there as well.

Yes they do have privileges but to have an office visit you have to go to a different place. That means you can't take advantage of the deal with the hospital.

You have to pay the much higher price for the office visit. They won't see you at the hospital because they don't Make as much money. It's understandable but I'm not happy about it.

That means the special agreement with the hospital is not so valuable.

Outside doctors having privileges there does not include them having offices for consultation, has nothing to do with making more money from you. You pay the same to your specialists for office"consultations" as you did before, status quo. I suggest that you deal with what is and not what you wish it to be. The fact remains that we are all lucky to now have such a hospital here and their rates for services rendered are very reasonable. More so than some hospitals in Guadalajara.

I don' t know about that. Dr. Daniel Briseno charges 1,000 peso less for a colonscopy if you use his preferred hospital in Guadalajara. Also, my Internal Medicine and Nephrologist specialist, who not only has access there, but is also in charge of Nephrology there ( on paper at least), had ordered a dye contrast test but the technician ( yes, the technician) refused to do it because he heard it was toxic, and would only perform it with the Nephrologist present. He phoned the Specialist, who told him to go ahead, but even then he refused to do it. Ridiculous state of affairs. The CT scan he produced was uselees, and I had to return for a second one. With my refund for the didn' t happen dye scan, I asked if they could xray my foot and hip for possible osteoarthritis damage. First thing I hear from my Specialist, X Rays are not fine enough to diagnose arthritic damage. I think your first appraisal of this hospital is right on. Even Dr. Garcia has an office and staff separate from the actual hospital. I know because I had my flu shot there, the hospital couldn' t do it.

I'm going to take your suggestion and deal with what is, like I've been doing for the 15 years I've lived in Mexico.

In my experience their rates are quite a bit higher than what you pay in Guadalajara.

1.It costs way more than $1000p for transport back and forth to a hospital in Guadalajara than to go to  SAT and  $1000p[$42 US] is a pittance.  2.As to YOUR anecdote re: your Nephrologist[kidney specialist] and CT tech story, sounds somewhat off to put it mildly. 3.What type of specialist told you  about x-ray for Osteoarthritis being useless after you asked for one? My Osteo shows up just dandy in my spine and right foot.  4.Dr. garcia is one of the main shareholders of SAT and when not in his office THERE[ where he consulted with my wife twice], can be seen walking around it daily checking up on every thing he and his shareholders created.

If you're going to make a statement like that can you back it up with FACT,what rates for what? By the way, no one is forcing you to go there and join some of the rest of us who are more than happy with treatment at SAT.

The OP asked if anybody had recent experience. I had recent experience and it was bad, but not life threatening, I reported what happened.  I had my experience with SAT and you have yours. Can' t we leave it at that? SAT is not a tier one hospital by the way, they have no ICU or 24 hr ready surgical care. If you get a torn colon, from a colonscopy lets say - next stop Guadalajara.

I would expect this place to be a work in progress given how new it is.  For sure if I needed something done and they could do it here just as well as GDL for 1000 pesos more it would make great good sense to do it here.  Once this shutdown passes, GDL is going to return to near gridlock most of the day.  We can only hope we'll continue to see better medical service here as the other new place opens and they are competing with each other.

And what about Pedro's libellous comments about one of the most respected Nephrologists Lakeside ( and Guadalajara)? Also my Urologist and Internal Specialist who looked at my CT scans and x rays?

If you think the comments are libelous you of course can forward them to the people being allegedly libeled and they can decide what if anything to do about it.  However, his comments about third parties, no matter how odious you find them, does not justify a personal attack on another poster.

The highly personal sentiments you expressed that I edited out can also be expressed in the form of a PM to the person you are angry with.

Doctors are like restaurants, everyone has their favorites and not so favorites.

All I can say is, several years ago there were no hospitals in the greater Ajijic-Chapala area. Today there is the Hospital in San Antonio where I have had great help and another one (almost completed?) just north of Walmart on the Libramiento.

Could someone possibly comment on the progress of the second hospital? Has it opened yet? And if not, when is the suggested completion date?   Thanks in advance for your comments.

The fact is I had a colonoscopy there and I was not happy with the service and I found out the price was much higher than in Guadalajara.

You're right, no one is forcing me to go there. Who said they were? I'm glad you're happy with the new hospital, that doesn't mean everyone has to be. Although I am glad it's there I wouldn't rely on it for anything very serious.

Thanks for your input Pedro but you need to read the posts more carefully and think more clearly before you reply.

Five points I would mention.

1. Very few insurance companies will cover anything but critical emergencies in Mexico.I think there is one plan that does.

My ex g/f got some cosmetic surgery here several years ago. The doctor wrote it up as something else, and she got reimbursed.

Often a hospital will simply tell you to pay and they will assist you in trying to get a reimbursement.

2. There is very little that can be done if a doctor/hospital in Mexico makes a mistake (MedMal).

3. Remember, a hospital may not hold you "hostage" if you can't pay the bill, or get someone to pay it.

4. If you are covered by Medicare or something in Canada, depending on the seriousness of diagnose and treatment plan, I personally would return to my home country where IMO, there are better facilities and accountability.

5. If we are talking something really major, set a second opinion, and I suggest you don't say you were told by Dr. X that (whatever). Rarely will one doctor say another one is wrong. It's the doctor's "Code of Silence." I had that happen here to me with a dentist that ended up being responsible for me to have to go to a hospital in Guadalajara for invasive treatment. No, I did not try to sue, nor do I piss into the wind.
