Hospital San Antonio

Recommended Posts

I often see comments about NOB medical care from folks SOB whom I suspect have not seen a medical professional there in 10-15 years. Most of those comments are negative. While I too think that the overall healthcare/drug system in the US is badly flawed and probably is going to stay that way for quite a while.... Bernie Sanders not withstanding 🤣.... my and my wife's experiences with the doctors/hospitals/ERs/specialists and, yes, even Medicare Advantage, have been and continue to be exemplary.

As gringal said, YMMV  and maybe has....

Ours too, in Texas.  Lot of bureaucracy though.

YES. That is the same number I was given when visiting the hospital in early May

PS I wasn't sick. I just wanted to see the setup. I was impressed and am glad to have a medical plan with Dr. Garcia.

I had a very positive experience there yesterday. I needed an Xray, and after discovering that the Maskaras facility was no longer in their former location, we proceeded to the new hospital.  A cheerful and competent young man at the unloading station helped me out of the car, into a wheelchair and down the hall to a very well equipped Xray room.  A helpful young technician dealt with the prescription and the charges were about the same as the old clinica.  We are fortunate to have this new facility to get Xrays done. 🙂

IMO, the greatest difference between here and NOB, and I have said this before is accountability.

NOB, is there is a screw up, you can sue for malpractice.

Here, you may get an apology ("Sorry for the inconvenience") but that pretty much it.

I am reading there was a recent interpretation from the Supreme Court in Mexico, that in some cases, you can get "moral damages" which is the same as putative damages. Maybe for pain and suffering, loss of future income, etc. ?

Having a CAT Scan or an MRI requires more than just the availability of the equipment.  A really good radiologist is needed to read, interpret, and report the findings from the images. They are not all equally talented, and your GP does not have the qualifications that are required.

The Chopo lab and the Chopo xray machine that was in Maskaras Clinica moved 200 mts east of the Maskaras building.  There was a sign before they moved about them having an MRI.  Did they have an MRI here or just a referral to their offices in Guad?  If it was here, then it's down by Pancho's.

Hospital San Antonio is what I consider to be expensive.  My hip was broken a year ago and the bone replaced but popped out of joint a couple of months ago, the second time this has happened.  The emergency persons who responded to my call asked where I wanted to go to get it fixed and said San Antonio was new, nice but very expensive.  Anyway, I went there by ambulance, was put asleep fairly rapidly and woke up with it repaired.  The multitute of lab, doctor, anesthesiologist, etc etc etc and an overnight stay cost a little over $19000 pesos.  So somewhere around 1000 US for those who convert.  For comparison I had the same thing happen in the US and it cost over $4000 US.  The care, cleanlinest and doctor interface were all much better here.  I felt the cost here was high for Mexico but I was happy the hospital was there.  Just my two cents.

I also use Quality Care frequently as they can usually have a specialist come in and it saves running around etc.  The charge ranges anywhere from $400 to 800 pesos per visit with a specialist.  I find the convenience and helpfulness of the staff to be well worth it.

I agree it's not unreasonable for a specialist (although I use two in Guad who charge less) but in this case the point was the receptionist would not tell Barcelonaman whether they are equipped to do chemo or not..... only a doctor could tell him.  Is there something wrong with this picture?  Of course, there is every chance the answer could be dependent on his particular case, BUT the recep should still have been able to say "yes, no or maybe".

You know private hospitals "usually," not always, are only there as a hospital where specialists can sign their patients into and rent operating rooms and the assistants and equipment they require for a fee and bring their own back up surgeon and anesthesiologist. Patients pay to rent a room etc. until released and pays the hospital bill and pays their doctor seperately usually. The hospital receptionist doesn"t know what those specislists do or don't do because they are not working for the private hospital. They are renting it to do what they need to for each individual case. There are exceptions where the GP and specialist works for a private hospital. It appears San Antonio Hospital is owned and operated by doctors and probably use other specialists etc. to offer more services.

Yes,doctors other than the owners have been granted use privileges of the facilities as you describe. We have always paid hospital and doctor fees/charges separately , not just this hospital.

I have not read all the older posts, so I apologize If this has been covered. I had a conversation with the person who deals with insurance . First the tiny bit of that sign is true ( some medicare supplements will be accepted) I called and spoke with 3 companies. Two will offer a supplement but of course if you are over 70 don't expect to leave anything to anyone in your will. The costs are very high. Next I was told if I called to sign up do not admit to any pre-existing condition. No way you will be able to get coverage. He actually said a computer program is set up to red flag you. Yes that notice at San Antonio Hospital is not true. If anyone finds out anything different, please share.

A few weeks ago I used my GEHA (government employees health association) insurance at Hospital San Antonio. Well I should say I tried to use it. At first the staff at Hospital San Antonio said that my entire emergency would be covered but they charged my $20000 USD UP Front and I had to pay it or the administrative staff there told me they would send me to a public hospital in the worst part of Guadalajara. They bullied me and I felt so uncomfortable but I was not in a position to fight. I paid the up front fee and then on discharge they just deducted it from the bill which I still had to pay and they gave me a bill with codes to submit to my insurer for reimbursement...such lies and thieves trying to trick people about accepting insurances. I will never go back to Hospital San Antonio in Tlyacapan.

I would have to agree I had Surgery on my Foot and Had insurance throw Beltons and the Doctor said we had to pay him for the surgery. Well the insurance company would not pay because the hospital needed to Bill my insurance company. Not the Doctor.

I will never go to that Hospital they are thieves and Tricking people.  Bad News.

I pay there with my Intercam debit card to the hospital and seperate to the doctors other than emerg docs and have not had one centavo stolen from me. You should rethink the sueable[sic] statements you made.

Much of the problem related to both local hospitals is related to us NOBers trying to use our Medicare supplemental coverage here in Mexico when it is not legal unless you are not living here but are just traveling and have a legitimate emergency.  If you do then don't let them bill your insurance.  Tell them you don't have insurance and pay with a credit card then submit for reimbursement when you get home.  The local practice is to WAY over charge if they think they can collect from US insurance.  Those charges might be rejected.  The other problem is that much of the time there is not a specialist on staff of even available until the next day.  Treat the local hospital more like an "UrgentCare" instead of a real hospital.  It is nice to have the facilities here for minor emergencies like sewing a cut and to get tests done like MRI's and even non- emergency surgeries.
