Has anyone else noticed that politically themed discussions on here result in a goodly amount of verbal rock throwing in both directions and "civilized" expressions of points of view go by the wayside?  Other topics don't result in this level of animosity.  Why is this being allowed now?

Back to Mexico. There has always been a racial tension in Mexico towards what they call Guatemalans, which could include anyone from Central America, other than El Salvador for some reason. So many terrible jokes and open public discrimination. It got so out of control 10 years ago with beatings, robberies, rapes, forced work, against illegal "Guatemalans" that the government had to pass sweeping human rights laws to protect them. Ask a Mexican is not everyone's favorite column, but it at least it tries to give some humor to this very real situation:

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't those most vigorously demanding a humble assimilation were, and still are, old white dudes and evangelical christians?

What a racist comment !

We do not see that hate of Guatemalans in CHiapas, heck most of the population was árt of Guatemala at a time. Not all people from Guatemala are short and darl .. same with the other places in Central America. People who crossed the river with us had blue eyes and were light skin and they still were  crossing to go to the States.

once you cross that border without permission you have broken the law....to claim asylum you show up to the embassy in your home country and request

When you apply at an embassy in your home country you are a Refugee - different legal definition and process.

When you apply for asylum from within the U.S. or at a point of entree you are an asylee - different legal definition and process.

when I migrated to Mexico I had to follow the procedure to the LETTER

Not to go off down another bunny trail but the process to gain legal entry from the U.S. into Mexico is ridiculously easy compared to legal entry from Mexico into the U.S.
