If you would like to help..

Several of you may know of, or have used the services of the small appliance / TV repair  shop in  SJC.

This is a long  established  three generation family shop, and it is the son  Jesus, whose wife is hospitalized and in need of urgent surgery.

As we all know  medical - hospital  expenses and after-care  are  expensive and have to be paid out of pocket.

Several local people have started a collection to help this family in need.

If you would like to help, please send me a PM,  and I can direct you to the person organizing this effort.

You can also stop   by the shop and offer a donation , etc..   Your kindness and help is appreciated  !

This matter is serious, and I ask that people  be respectful by making  posting that are helpful and not frivolous, as sometimes happens with other posts.

Have some foresight, Get IMSS when you are healthy, like I did, and you will not have any problems, I had surgery, and....many treatments, all first class and VERY reasonable annual fixed cost the problem is that most Americans do not understand government run health care, if it is Social it is NOT GOOD!!!

SP is NOT free and in fact, does not cover all illnesses. Many tests like MRIs must be paid out of pocket before surgery. There is a shortage of drugs used to treat many illnesses and must also be bought on the economy. Kyle is correct that paying for treatment is out of reach for many Nationals.

Shortage of medicines in clinics and specialists consulations is a past problem and reorganized to supply what they expect to use. If not there come back with the stamped out of stock prescription next week. Simple if you know your written perscription medicine if not very common will be in the next order and show up that day. You need to ask. Emergency rooms are well supply for any emergency with medicines.

SP now has 294 diagnosis and treatment of illnesses. Almost everything except dialysis which will come soon either to the SP or IMSS.

SP is not free - IMS is unlikely to cover any pre-exisiting  conditions and these are not helpful or informed contributions. It is just another bossy gringo giving bad info because, you know, we know better.

You are the one not informed. SP is free to about 98 percent of the 57 million clients it services. If you know better why not prove it?

I guess  nobody  read the posters  last paragraph

I certainly did and see no reason for anyone going to a private hospital they cannot afford when SP is available to them 45 miles away.

Ladies and Gentlemen -

The purpose of this post  was to ask for help for a Mexican family,  without posting a whole lot  of personal information about the  situation.

As a FYI  the person is in an IMMS hospital.  However , there are always expenses involved for families when a person is ill, is hospitalized and needing  surgery,  with needed follow up aftercare and those  associated  expenses..

Alan, thank you for the specific coverage information.  Bontepar, I am happy for your  wonderful foresight and financial situation to take advantage of  the Mexican  health care system to take care of your health needs. Not all Mexican Nationals  are as fortunate as you financially  .

Reading the post, your options  were  to help or not help or by pass the posting, and avoid  a back and forth  [ snarky  ] exchange about who   is right or wrong about the health care system,  which ultimately  dilutes  the purpose of the initial post., . . Help if you like,  or  ………………...

It's apparent you don't  KNOW Mexico.  Do you really think it's that easy for many Mexicans to pay for IMSS?  Do you understand that IMSS requires the entire family to be registered, each at a cost per person depending on age, and perhaps that is more than the family can afford? Do you understand that if a worker is registered in his employment,  monthly payments come off their paycheck end the employer pays the premiums, but if a  private family registers they have to pay annually like we do and that can be WAY out of their budget? ( In this case the family has IMSS but as Jackie says, there are still many outside costs involved)

Do you know that SP requires payment for many medications AND many services if outside the ordinary range of circumstances, so while it is "free" and provides for essentials, it is not "free" in the sense you intimate. A Mexican friend recently needed surgery to repair severe knee injury and was quoted $4,000   pesos over and above the "free" part of SP even though he was a member!

So I'm sorry bontepar, but your arrogant attitude towards this situation is unwarranted and does not bode well for your integration into Mexico.

I do have SP and know it does not cover everything so it is not free. Do you require receipts, Alan?

Ahh - he must have opted for the titanium pins add on, rather than the free surgical stainless steel - correct?

Sometimes the public hospital specialists opt for special equipment that they are trained on, but have to rent from outside sources. I don't ever think they ever receive any substantial kickback, it just as specialists who have spent many, many years in school and as interns are mostly geeks. Geeks like all the cool toys. The outcome is what matters though, and usually the specialised equipment is safer and with a better outcome. Imagine if the patient had to pay the cost of a surgical team, followup and dressings.

Your first post claim is false. You claim SP is not free. It is free. You use the definative statement which means all 57 million members pay to use the SP everytime they go there. False. Some may pay something sometimes. See Chillin's post. He knows how to write without forgeting high school English classes where we learn not to use definative statements unless there is proof available.

Your answer to my rebuttal is the same. You need to bone up on writing a claim that might be true instead of false. Other posters will read what is written here and possibly be misled by your lack of better writing skills thinking you're correct instead of wrong.

I started this post for one purpose only , and have now asked one of the Moderators to  close the post .

From the initial post    it has gone so far afield from where it started, to the point where  some people make  it look  like three year olds  having a pissing contest            about who  is right or  wrong  about IMMS / SP coverage, freedom of speech , writing skills   and etc.. . This was not the topic of this initial post.

IF IMMS / SP  health coverage was an important topic for educational purposes and  that  person(s)  wanted to inform others, , another thread should have been started with this topic, and not hi-jack this  initial posting .

I rarely post on this webboard , and seeing how this topic ran amuck, reinforces why  I do not post often.   I believe I am not the only person who utilizes this board  who  must feel as frustrated  as I am  right now when  a topic goes  totally   off-tilt  when there is no  reason  for that to happen.

It is always a personal choice to help another person  in any given situation.  Many people have contacted me and offered help for this family, and that is appreciated.

The Moderator may not like what and how I have expressed myself , and delete my posting, that is fine.

I guess this topic will always resonate with some folks sensitives regarding being covered for medical emergencies...think of the recent GOFUNME for a "notable" Gringo...

Why do people not plan for these medical emergencies...I have no idea..Having said that,.I am amazed when many Mexican's will just roll their eyes when I have suggested getting enrolled in SP or IMSS
