Mexico doesn't have a gas 'shortage', they have too much!

I just got to Chiapas where I found out that gas is cheaper than in jalisco by 1 peso a liter and ere is plenty of it. I was told that the gas comes in by truck from Oaxaca, Tabasco and Vera Cruz and it never was delivered via pipeline here therefore no problem no shortage. All the indigenous communities sell gas out of cans at a little higher price and it is not stolen gas...This story came from a neighbor of mine who drives a cab and a cousin who works for Pemex..

Apparently within minutes of opening the pipeline in Tlajomulco yesterday there was tons of cars coming in to still the gas so the pipeline was closed again and this morning on the way to the airport I saw several lines and many stations out of gas.. The pipeline was opened at the request of the governor to help out the shortage but it was closed down quickly.. So many thieves out there..

Oh well, I guess that this thread is going to get shut down because of the nasty people.  But honestly, I seriously doubt that this gas shortage has anything to do with a nefarious socialist agenda, but everything to do with a new government attempting to put the brakes on criminal organizations from stealing the people's natural resources.  Yes it sucks!  And, yes, I hope they can find a durable solution, and soon!

Anyone has read the story about the gas shortage.. In facebook someone explained that Pemex stations report what they sell to Pemex and pay taxes on that amount.. If a staton reports to Pemex they sell 3000 liters they then receive 3000... Let´s say that in reality they sell 10 000 liters, they pay on the 3000 Pemex replenish the 3000 and the other 7000 are bought from the stolen reserve... If all of a sudden the stolen supply is cutoff you have a whole lot of resupplying missing hence the shortage.. Anyone else has read that explanation?

dichosalocura , I  am  afraid you are right , it is all about corruption theft, delivery etc.. nothing to do with a socialist plan..I just got to Chiapas and there is no pipeline here, trucks have been delivering for ever  and there is no shortage and the gas here is cheaper.. go figure..

Mexico cannot afford to continue to lose approaching $2 billion every year in gasoline. This is the only way they could try to get a handle on it for the future. Sure it is inconvenient, but people must support this measure if AMLO is to keep his promises. Actually, the only ones I hear complaining are those who did not vote for AMLO, or those who are hung up on him being a Socialist(and that is usually an extranjero who has not made an attempt to gain Mexican Citizenship and vote)!

And, in Guanajuato, where often 80% of the sales are stolen, not only is there that shortage, but easy to tell when they resupply, who has been cheating Mexico. AMLO is making things happen and putting the Mexican people and Mexico first. Sound familiar? Expect a lot of bitching from those who stand to lose both money and power under AMLO !

Yes I've read that, and heard a bit more. Besides choking the distribution snake at the neck, I'm also told they're going after the money side to attack that end -- the BIG profit. (Criminals plus Banks plus PEMEX Officials plus Gob Officials? Yikes.) Going after the distribution of both the asset and the profits is an agressive strategy. And scary, if true. Interesting times.

So from what I hear, there is a lot more to this plan than "no gas for you!". We'll see.

People don't complain about it because they didn't vote for him although those will shout louder ofcourse, but actually most of those people also all agree this was highly necessary. But the main reason people complain (and not only those who didn't vote for AMLO but also those who did vote for him) is the fact there is zero communication. First of all they simply denied there were shortages and that most gasolineras had gasoline, until a few days ago they finally told they were wrong about it. ok you admit you were wrong, but then at least try to resolve the problem but they don't. They don't have any idea about how much time this situation will continue to take, they only repeat don't panic. Why they don't send more gastrucks to lower the shortages etc etc? Get some trucks from states with no shortages, rent trucks or whatever. There simply doesn't arrive enough gasoline to Guadalajara. 15 million liters is needed every day, they knew this since the beginning. Only about the half is arriving, ofcourse people start panicking, the situation is getting worse every day.

There was already one week shortage in several states when the shortage also started in Guadalajara last weekend. And in that moment the responsible secretary of energy starts to twitter about a soccer game... I mean WTF?!?!?! Instead she should be working her ### off to get those shortages somehow resolved. Of course people start to complain. Of the 6 gas stations around me and where i pass to the school of my children me only one has gasoline all day and that line is enormous,  I don't even bother losing hours of my time there. All others are closed. Sometimes other gas stations get gas but it gets empty within 2 hours. A teacher of my children was waiting in line for 5 hours last night to get his car filled up and arrived to the school totally exhausted.

The main issue the people are complaining is the bad communication and even after two weeks the situation is getting only worse and no end is in sight.

I wonder if I can go a bit off topic here.  "opening the pipeline in Tlajomulco" caught my eye. What pipeline is this from where to where. I go to Zapopan via Joctepec every few months. For months they were working on installing a pipeline (about 8") beside the highway west of Jocotepec. I wondered what the pipeline was for. Several times I stopped and asked the workers what the pipeline was for. They said for gasoline. I didn't understand from where to where.  Does anyone know?

gringohombre, made a personal observation. Commit your opinion, don't make it personal.

I know bmh but, I would never make it personal.  A good person we just have different ideologies.  If you can't make your own argument then don't go personal.

Now I have had many debates with the other side....always if I make my point well the they always go personal. I remember many years ago one person got so angry he flipped a table over. Ha!

Great oysters from Appalachia.

Yes, i had made what I thought was a very logical comment questioning why this problem regarding the gas situation was not happening in the U.S., Canada or the E.U.? A very prolific nasty poster had responded with the cited comment OMG!  How was growing up in Appalachia? together with what I would consider a bigoted photo. Both my post and this reply were somehow deleted. My question is, who has the ability and authorization (other than the poster) to arbitrarily go in and delete without any kind of notification?

My point was that no free market company or corporation would allow this to happen because of stockholder revolt due to diminished share prices. Heads would roll. What happened to the attempt at privatization of the oil industry here by the last administration?

I am a Residente Permanente with all the rights and privileges of a Mexican citizen except voting, and even if I were not, Free Speech is still legal in this country so I can express my opinions any way i want. How dare you try to tell me what I can or cannot say here or anywhere else. And by the way many Mexicans agree with me, just ask the ones waiting in line.

Pemex wasn't denationalized.  It lost some of its monopoly on the production, distribution and sale of petroleum products.  The idea was opening it up to competition might force it to clean up its act.  Given that much of this massive theft of product that has exploded in the last several years involves Pemex employees it doesn't appear that has worked.

What I can't get my head around is why anyone would think a country with the level of governmental corruption this one has could somehow as if by magic run a government owned oil company.  That is truly magical thinking IMO.  Pemex is simply a reflection and repetition of that corruption.  CFE is just another example of the same thing.  A while back it was reported that a million households in Mexico city are stealing electricity.

Another recent report noted CFE losing millions of dollars in stolen electricity in Puebla.  Also reported is this theft has skyrocketed since 2016 and as usual involves employees as well.  Amazing the employees of both Pemex and CFE, among the very best paid in Mexico, are such thieves.

As a result, Mexicans pay through the nose for all forms of energy and will continue to do so IMO.  The socialistic scam here is the myth the people are somehow served by "owning" their energy.  The real owners of course are the corrupt politicians, executives and union workers who feed off of these entities.  All the Mexican people own are high prices and lousy service.

This is what you're forgetting .. You're a guest in someone's country.

So you are a guest huh? How is that working out for you, do you get special guest privileges? Member Discounts? Preferred Seating? Legal Immunity (honest officer, I didn't know!)? Or are you just another overworked, tired, slob on the bus, trying to make it back home?

So much better then the so called Capitalist countries, who have produced the highest energy wasting, polluting monsters of all time to fuel their economies. The rapacious greed to steal what is not theirs to take, to maintain these levels of  life destroying indulgencies, rises to the top levels of government, which are willing to go to war, and military invasion, just to secure its lifeblood, like some sick old flock of vampires, mercessly feeding off another's blood.

Oh I absolutely agree.  Much better for the cartels and criminal political class and a handful of insiders to benefit from the nation's energy than the average Jose on the street.  He can ride his bicycle and sit in the dark, ungrateful fellow!  Why should he benefit from a system that has produced the greatest good for the greatest number in the history of man?  Why should he get to live in a country where rivers like the Santiago and air pollution like GDL are just a fading memory?

Gotta limit that rapacious greed to the privileged, after all.   Can't let this prosperity thing get out of hand!  :D

Ooh yuck - now you are sounding like that white supremacist, Republican Senator, Joe King. He claims only white people have brought any good to the world. Ignoring the great civilizations and libraries of wisdom in Timbuktu, Alexandria and Ethiopia which had long crumbled to dust by the time white Europeans were sitting around scratching their fleas, trying to figure out how to covet their neighbour's livestock, farms and women folk. When pickings got tough, because of competition from government, first thing they thought was to move to the "new worlds", with murderous intentions of colonialism and slavery. If you think the civilizations of the Western world will be sustainable longer than the great African empires you are wrong. The question will be if Earth is destroyed before another great empire of human accomplishments emerges? Or will be another dead planet, unihabitable, but still being run by AI robots. This is very common belief among many of the world's elite futurists.
