Looking for specialists in/near Ajijic

Recommended Posts

My husband and I are coming down to find a place in December and hoping to be able to find and move in by first week of January. My husband is a diabetic and we are looking for recommendations for an ophthalmologist and a podiatrist. I've already seen a bunch of threads about endocrinologists, so that's been pretty well covered.

Second question - I'm having trouble figuring out whether we need prescriptions for our maintenance medications or not. Can someone suggest a good online reference or help me out. I'd prefer not to post the list, but would appreciate a pm, especially re psych meds.

Hopefully, you have made some trips here before and are fairly familiar with how life happens here once you have your feet on the ground. If not, you will be in for lots of surprises. Just sayin'.

Ophthalmologist recommendation:  Dr. Vargas.  Main office at Hospital de Hierro in Guadalajara.  Comes one day a week to see Lakeside area people in an office within the Ajijic Clinic/Hospital.  Appts. at the Hospital reception counter.

Don't think there are any podiatrists, but I like the orthopedic surgeon who comes in to Quality Care (Laguna Mall): Dr. Martinez.

The best “oftamologos“ will be found in Guadalajara, not so much at Lake Chapala.

Why say that when you haven't been here in years? One of your wife's good friends had excellent results from surgery performed by an ophthalmologist who maintains an office above the immigration office in Chapala but yes she performs the surgery in a specialty clinic in Guadalajara.

While it may be OT but  a  MAJOR question.  Does the OP expect to come in December (hopefully with reservations at a B&B, etc ahead of time) and find a rental available

for January??  We know what the market has been like and certainly there is no reason to expect any difference this coming winter? Rentals are few and far between and by January almost impossible to find.  Medical matters but so does somewhere to stay.  And even buying can easily take months.

On Hidalgo in Chapala, one block to the east of the main intersection, and right on the corner with Aquiles Serdan is an office with a large foot painted on the door.  The two podiologos in there will probably be able to help you.  I prefer the doctora and have used her for years.  I have no idea what her qualifications are or where she got them.

Our podriatist is medical doctor, then he interned with Guadlajara podriatists, including Dr George for a short time, who I  believe is also a licensed doctor. Our doctor can write prescription and perform surgery, with a team. He is very busy, he comes to Lakeside twice a week and charges only 250 peso to visit in your home. Be careful with diabetic feet. When you are closer to coming down, contact me, and will dig out his information.

Chillin, I went to Dr. George.  He "operated" on my toe in his extremely dirty office.  Yes, I was in such distress that I let him.  Then had to have an orthopedic to fix what Dr. George messed up ... after the infection from his procedure was cleared up.  I would not take my dog to him, however, I am sure there are others that will sing his praises.  BTW, the  podiologos that Bando is speaking of are the ones that referred me to Dr. George because what I needed was more than they could handle. They give a good pedicure minus the polish, however.

Not necessarily true.  Things have changed in the years since you left.  I know various people who are very pleased with Dra. Claudia.  Perhaps she did not have her practice in Chapala when you were moved away from here several years ago.

They are husband and wife and only technicians not doctors but you can get a nice bunion scraping and pedicure.

Farmacia Similares has a website, but Spanish only. They have very good prices, specializing in quality generics. The Farmacias Similares across the road from the Chapala bus station also has a consultario right next door. They are usually young doctors and will write you a script for I believe about 50 pesos. Anything more exotic has to be ordered in from a specialty farmacia in Guadalajara. All opoids and hypnotic drugs are tightly controlled in Mexico. Many farmacias will do this for you and some even offer free delivery. Farmacia Similares does not offer ordering service nor delivery, it is always difficult to find parking there, usually you have to double park, leaving a driver in case you have to move, or waved on by a transito.

Yes to Dra Claudia. I just went to see her yesterday, very professional and the most thorough eye examination I have ever had. The glaucoma test was completely pain free, and new cataract surgery is now also painless. Seguro Popular covers cataract surgery, but is slow and you can pay for an upgrade if you don't like their choice of lens. Otherwise is it is free, if you are over 60 in Jalisco. Whether you have to be a permanent resident to get this public insurance is always up for debate. If you don't mind supporting a vehicle there are lots of rentals up in the hills. Many houses are empty, abanded or for sale. If you you don't mind renting in a for sale house or casita, then you will have no problems, especially if you get a professional prepared lease.

You sure have more than your fair share of problems. I had the same experience with a Dr. George franchise, plus high pressure to purchase way over priced Dr. George labelled product. This is why we like Dr. Daniel, we know our house is clean and don't to have anybody elses foot or toenail scrapings around. He thoroughly sterilizes his utensils, if you need surgery he will take you to the private surgery in Guadalara. He closed his clinic in Guadalajara, and leased out his commerical property there, and his office is now his cellphone. He is definetely a free spirit (loves fast cars, of which he has many, and I think he still maintains his commercial air pilot license), compassionate, and a great sense of humour.

I can not understand why a person not even here yet would shop for specialists. The first doctor to find is a primary care physician and after you have established confidence, shared one's medical history, and taken all the basic tests, get referrals from him/her.

My diabetes has gone, my aortic stenosis regressed, and my leg's blocked artery has grown bypasses in the first six months of being here. I guess due to the new diet and forced walking I do. Three fewer specialists to pay.

Yes, we have B&B reservations from 12/4 to 1/9 for finding a place to rent.

Glad to hear of your improved health in Mexico. We can hope for the same, but need to be prepared. While you may believe we are jumping the gun, I'd rather have a short list of doctors that residents have used and liked. There will be plenty of things to do settling in and knowing that there are specialists of the types we need available makes for one less immediate concern. Taking care of diabetic feet when there is so much walking is not something we can put off.

Most houses in the hills rent from $600 to $800 U.S., most of them built in the late seventies, large suburban homes. Some houses have way too many stairs. Some people ask for $1,000 plus per month, but they are slow to rent. Many houses up here have been for sale for years, mostly overpriced. Most responsible landlords want someone in the house to help with maintenance, and discourage burglars or squatters. My immediate neighbour have a situation like that - they only pay CFE and gas - the house will eventually sell, but who know when. My wife just saw on Facebook a post that a pretty, clean, 2 bedroom 2 bath house for $450 US in Jocotepec. Joctoepec is further away from high quality, local medical medical care, but it is closer to Guadalajara, and the taxis cost much less there than Chapala. The public hospital for Lakeside is also in Jocotepec

Yes many people report better health, did you read the article under Mexico General that health and happiness depends more on where you live.
