Latin America has suffered more than 2.5m murders since the start of this century and is facing an acute public security crisis that demands urgent and innovative solutions, a new report warns.

“The sheer dimensions of homicidal violence are breathtaking,” says the report by the Igarapé Institute, a Brazil-based thinktank focused on security and development issues.

The publication, released on Thursday, paints a bleak portrait of what it calls the world’s most homicidal continent.

Latin America suffers 33% of the world’s homicides despite having only 8% of its population. One-quarter of all global homicides are concentrated in four countries – Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela – all of which are gearing up for presidential elections in which security is a dominant theme.

There's nothing political or partisan about it  It is a Brazilian think tank report and serves to remind us the problem is bigger than just this one country.  Too often people think this is only Mexico's problem and this lays that illusion to rest.  If you read the summary of the cited report it suggests the problem is bigger than just narcotics.

This study wasn't even done for or specifically about Mexico.  It is more of a regional perspective.

And Tiny, the study was just released.  It is new.

Security and development report. Concerns Mexico and those who live here and in this region of the World. Try not to cover up the truth and reflect it away. THAT does not make it go away. No matter how you cut it, we live in a Country that has much bigger violence/security  concerns for its citizens than possibly any other country in the World ! Ignoring it just allows it to get worse.

News about violence in Latin America is "not new news"  if it was printed today, last month, last year, last 10 years, last 20 years, etc.

There maybe countries in the Middle East and Africa that would disagree. People like killing people.

If you will check, 2017 was the year that Mexico led the World, far ahead of the Middle East. Check it out.

Note the original report cited is based on total numbers as opposed to the per capita rate data cited in Tiny's reference.  On a rate basis Venezuela is almost four times higher than Mexico!  Also Tiny your reference doesn't include the Middle East so it doesn't directly address or refute the statement you are quoting.  It was very interesting and informative to see all the numbers.  Chile for example has a murder rate of 3.3 versus around 5 for the U.S. and 22.5 for Mexico.

Here's a reference on the Middle East:

The "new " news, Tiny, is how MUCH it has increased over the last few years, and continues to increase. The actual number of dead bodies in these 4 countries is unreal, and growing daily !

And, even sadder, those of us who live in these 4 countries know for a fact that these numbers are VERY low and the actual numbers are Much higher because of the lack of proper reporting. How much higher is anyone's guess: 40%, 50% ,..80%,....? Think about that and it gets really scary for the citizens of those countries. Why wouldn't security be a #1 priority for their Presidential Elections?!
