Post stroke rehabilitation options in Ajijic or Guadalajara

Has anyone had any post stroke rehabilitation in Guadalajara or Ajijic?  My mom lives down there year round and she recently had a stroke. I am trying to figure out her options and learn from others experiences. Are stroke victims able to get quality rehab care down there (or in Guadalajara) or do they often return to the States? Thank you.

She has her husband with her. They do have private insurance, she is currently in a private hospital in Guadalajara.  Are there english language speech therapists at all in Guadalajara or Ajijic?  We currently do not know the state of her nuerological deficits because she is sedated, but suspect she has right side paralysis of arm and leg.  I am wondering what others have experienced in Ajijic or Guadaljara with post stroke physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.  How is is the quality of care? She speaks a little Spanish, but not much conversational.  Her spouse is fluent in Spanish. Trying to be aware of all options and determine if she'll need to come back to US for care.  Thank you.

Hola, I sent you a PM. I know someone whose spouse is currently in rehab for a major stroke. She did lots of due diligence sifting through the options available locally.

And I sent you a PM about the same subject, Tom.

we know your mom and wish to extend our sympathies as to her sudden situation. she has a lot of friends here and interactions are a key to improvement. also helps with depression which is  a side effect of brain trauma. can't say enough nice things about the quality of care available here and the compassion of caregivers. hope your mom makes a swift recovery, it is possible.

My recommendation:

Clinica de Rehabilitacion Integral, Dra. Justina Jimenez Lopez, Carretera Poniente #234 D Int., Ajijic, Tel. (376) 766-5563.

While I have used this rehabilitation clinic for other physical problems, I have witnessed first hand for the last 11 years several severely physically compromised patients due to strokes make fantastic progress under the care of Dra. Justina and her staff.  These are very capable, knowledgeable, English speaking professionals.

Dra. Justina can provide a physical therapy program or adhere to one set forth by your Mother's specialist in Guadalajara.  She has done both for me over the years.

Each therapy session usually last for 1 hour and the cost is $350.00 pesos per session which right now is about $18.00 U.S. dollars.  If necessary, they will also come to your home but it would probably be much better, if possible, for your Mom to get out and about a little and this would be an excellent start.

In my opinion, having experience with my Mom's care in the States and then here Lakeside as well as mine and my husband's, your Mom would be much better off here at Lakeside as far as healthcare is concerned.  However, I realize there are other concerns to be considered that only you and she can determine.

You might like to call and talk to Dra. Justina directly and have her address some of your concerns.  If so, I would suggest that you call sometime Monday through Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon.

Some years ago, a friend of mine here had a stroke that affected his speech and language.  Since there were no English speaking S&L therapistsat that time, , he ended up having to go back to the US.   He had excellent health insurance here but they were unable to provide an English speaking therapist.

I  know there is or was  a S&L therapist here who works (or worked) in one of the private schools.  I don't know if she is connected now to an insurance company, but I doubt it.

With S&L issues, it is best to start the therapy very quickly.

Dr. Justina has a PHYSICAL therapy facility, but not Speech and language..

Good luck, I hope your mom gets the help she needs quickly.
