IMSS vs. SP

I am a little uncomfortable wading in here - But this has never stopped me in the past! I mentioned previously that health care, and education, Pemex and CFE are very political in Mexico. These were are movements here, started very left of centre, "for the people of Mexico". You will hear that phrase a lot, especially around election time and "El Grito!". The IMSS, as far as I can tell, was the one first out the gate, to provide workers health insurance for their families. All the above mentioned institutions quickly became heavily unionised and then abused by political cronyism. For example the head of teacher's union who is now in prison, bought two new Hummers for family members, and was found to own a $million plus home in the U.S.A. So much of this is now embedded in these institutions, which is a much kinder word than constipated. ;)

IMSS hospitals, particularly in Jalisco, have come under fire. My opinion is that the SP hospital are more "faith based", in their history and attitude. Look at the pictures and events at the Hospital Civil webpage, you will see a lot of white faces giving donations, attending gala balls, getting involved Are the SP hospitals "better" I don't have experience - and quite frankly, hope I never will. I felt the same way with Canada's medical system. The Mexican business people who are paying the IMSS deductions, would never go to an IMSS hospital. They are too afraid they might wake up in a bed next door to one of their workers. I know a young medical professional in Guadalajara has told me he pays over $10,000 U.S. per year for his private insurance. Of course, this is tax deductible.

My working days are over, and just trying to make ends meet. This move by ENT, is the first time I have ever heard of any Mexican politician embracing senior ex-pats. Many seniors are not as wealthy as many Mexicans think, he has advocated for all of us, and 99% of senior expats can't even reward him with our vote. Think about it.

IMSS is impossible to get.  I tried last year, 60 years old in perfect health.  I used a lawyer and we jumped through the hoops with many many trips to IMSS hospital to get all the tests they required .  They turned me down with no reason.  Wasted a lot of money and a LOT. Of time.

IMSS is not "almost imposible to get" Any legal resident (not tourist) can get it.

IMSS sends representatives on Monday and Tuesday a.m. to assist those applying.  There are waiting periods for covering pre-existing conditions.  It is NOT impossible to get, as one poster claims.  Both my husband and I have carried it for over 8 years, although we have not used the services.  It is not free: the cost varies, based on age.  Seguro Popular costs less and depends on the individual financial circumstances.

Anecdotal information:  A friend's good friend has Seguro Popular coverage and has developed colon cancer.  Seguro Popular does not cover the cost of chemo. treatment. Another Lakeside person who I used to know had all the costs of her breast cancer treatment, including hospice care, covered by IMSS. Good to know when making the decision between the two programs. Be sure to get all the details.

Seguro Popular treats colon cáncer,

IMSS has exclusions to join and 6, 12, 18, 24, 36 month waiting periods for some pre-existing medical conditions. Exclusión to join includes, Mental illness, advanced diabetes, drug or alcohol addiction, advanced COPD, liver disease, kidney failure, HIV+, hepititis C, etc,

I read the translated article which said nothing about chemo treatment which is usually done following colon cancer surgery.  Another unfortunate friend had recent surgery for colon cancer under private insurance, and the enormous cost of the chemo treatments following would have broken anyone's bank account.

Recently, I went with a client to Seguro Popular. In 10 minutes he was signed up. In another 10 minutes he saw an English speaking doctor here in San Miguel where he presented tests etc from a private hospital. He was given a referral to a heart specialist. His next referral will be to schedule his heart surgery in Leon. His Decil (level) is a 2 so he will not pay for SP nor for surgery.

Like anywhere healthcare varies in Mexico but there are many very good facilities and doctors.

saludos

Sonia

Yes, the State of Guanajuato seems to be much further along with social development than the State of Jalisco.  Also a big difference with the condition of the general infrastructure (eg. condition of roads).  Maybe it has something to do with the employment situation with all of the new industries thriving in the Guanajuato region??

What tests and why. I needed no tests. Just paperwork.  It is illegal for them to turn you down with no reason.

Laws have changed you have to have bloodwork, chest X-rays EKG etc.  first they said my cholesterol was high so I went to my own doctor he did bloodwork and said it was fine .  They were just trying to find a reason .  Every time I went they wanted another test which meant a trip to Guad with someone from the lawyers office who spoke Spanish.  They could have told me all the tests they needed on the first trip. After 5 trips I gave up, that is exactly what they wanted

Very hard to understand. Why did you need a lawyer?  It is a simple process used by thousands of people every day.  It is so easy.

Incorrect.  You must have an IFE card to register with IMSS.  One gets this when one attains residency status.

This is getting to be a big problem on this webboard.  People ask questions, and others presume they know best.  It's like the old joke...."I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV!"

Wonder when the IMSS rules changed. The website says requirements are:

Requisitos para afiliarse en Ventanilla

  • Presentarse en la Subdelegación con: identificación oficial, acta de nacimiento, CURP y comprobante de domicilio.
  • Proporcionar datos generales y llenar un cuestionario médico.
  • Cubrir el pago de la cuota anual.

Can't see anything about medical tests required for 2016......  What office did you go to?  Who performed your tests and where? Was there a charge for your tests?
