Internet Speed

My Internet speed at my house in Ajijic (Telmex) is down to 1.6 Mb down load and .3 upload. I need at least 3 MB to use streaming Netflix and using my Magic Jack. I'm renting and just moved two blocks west of Ajijic square.

When I was East of the village, I was getting 3.8 for the mid price.

I was told , that it does no good to pay for 10 mb because you will get the same speed as mid-speed anyway.

I was considering going to cable, but was told that cable is out a lot of the time

Any suggestions

Ah Ha! You are the one! All that streaming and jacking! No wonder ours is also slow. :unsure:

What you heard is correct. What is available is what you get. The same is true for CFE; sometimes 80V, sometimes 140V. :(

I'm getting 10 plus down but only .71 up. I have the 999 peso plan.

WOW!!

I would switch or upgrade tomorrow, if I could get 10.

Do you think that you are getting that speed because of your house location? I was told by several friends that they paid for the 999 plan, but couldn't get even 4 mb download

With the same package I only got 5 down and about .3 up. Something happened early this year and it doubled. I am on Revolution a few blocks from the Telmex office. Maybe that helps.

You write that your internet speed is down from where it was. What ping values do you get with speedtest.net? Have you had Telmex check your connections as they come into the house? We had blackened wires and slower and slower speeds. Telmex finally replaced the wires and replaced the connectors coming in, and the speed popped up from 1.5 Mb up to 5. Do you have bright and shiny phone line cable connectors going from the phone jack, and then also at your router/modem?

Is the speed the same at all times of day? If you get your old normal higher speeds at off-peak times, and if the speed drops in the late afternoon and evening, you may have some teenager or other people using highbandwidth, to stream movies or play games, which would mean the problem is that you have too many people on your server streaming movies and doing other heavy-use activities chewing up bandwidth. If it is equally slow at all times of the day, it points to a corrosion or equipment problem with your Telmex line.

TelMex can almost always help you get up to your chosen speed. And the truth is, if you go to the 10 Mb package, and you end up getting 5 that month, then you simply switch to the mid plan (do this on the phone to Mexico City, not here in town), and insist that you keep the same speed. It works every time. You will know long before that what speed is truly available in your area.

And the truth is, if you go to the 10 Mb package, and you end up getting 5 that month, then you simply switch to the mid plan (do this on the phone to Mexico City, not here in town), and insist that you keep the same speed. It works every time. You will know long before that what speed is truly available in your area.

Not sure what you mean by the phone to Mexico City Computor Guy. Can you explain? Thanks

Infinitum technical support is centred in Mexico City. 01-800-123-2222. The guys here at the Ajijic office know squat about service, and from what I've seen over the years, could care less. The support staff in the D.F., after some training, are generally top-notch and very pleasant to deal with. I must talk to them once a week in the down-season, so I've got a few calls under my belt. Sure, you get a loser every so often. Then you just call back and get someone else. They will not stop until the situation is resolved as best as it can be, even to the point of sending technicians.

What I'm saying, then, is do all the work through Mexico City if you want anything accomplished other than exchanging your modem.

I put in a call to the locale Telmex. Hope, they come out today. I don't understand how Mexico City can replace connections, wires, etc out side my house.

I'm renting an older house, so the phone lines from the pole may be 20 years old.

I checked my speed around 7:00 pm yesterday, which is usually the highest usage and it was .6 Mb download. This is like dial-up speed

Mexico City Telmex phone reps have higher levels of training and understanding, and they can be much more persistent in pursuing solutions that actually resolve the problem. Local guys tend to blow-things-off more often, accepting minimum efforts to close out the open work order. Local phone reps are more likely to accept half-way efforts by the local techs, making the local phone reps less-than-responsive in resolving ongoing customer complaints. Been there, done that, with Telmex coming out to our place 5 times to blame the problem on our home's "non-Telmex cables". After listening to those excuses 2 times, I offered to buy 20m official Telmex cable from the Telmex tech. He said "How much will you pay?" I offered $100 pesos, and he gave me 300 meters of their outdoor cable. I rewired the house with their cable. Dealing with the same problem again in 2 months, the Telmex techs came out again, and declared "the problem is that your house does not have Telmex cabling". I told them to look again, and they insisted "the problem is that your house does not have Telmex cabling". I then pointed out that the house's internal cables were exactly the same black Telmex cable that also came off the pole. They then blamed our internal connections. All were just excuses to not have to climb poles out in the street and excuses to not have to go into the pits where their junctions get wet from heavy rains.

Get the Mexico City city phone reps to use their spurs on the local techs to get them to fix the real problems.

Your 0.6 Mbps is slow and unacceptable, but still almost 10X faster than 56 Kbps dial-up modem speed, which equals 0.054 Mbps. What ping value do your get? Same slow speed at different times of the day? Why not use the 01-800-123-2222 to register your complaint? or be happy ignoring the professional advice offered to you and argue over why you think the professional advice won't work. Good luck

I live 1.1 Km from where the telephone line connects to the internet and pay $599 per month which means I should be getting up to 5 megs down by I don't remember what up.

I entered my modem and discovered that my settings are




Ancho de banda (ascendente/descendente) [kbps/kbps]:
764 / 6.013

And I'm getting about 85% thereof or

which is exactly what I am paying for. It's been that fast since the settings in my modem were updated about two years ago.

So not only is it important to know what you are paying for, but to see what your settings are in your modem.

And no I don't stream that much. Maybe they gave me the correct high settings because I have not been streaming. Who knows

Since Bigrig's speeds were acceptably fast in the past, then fell to under 2 Mbps, and then fell yet further to 0.6 Mbps, does that indicate a modem setting problem?

Is Bigrig playing with the settings on his modem/router, or is there deteriorating hardware issue like problems with defective connections, switches, or router. Maybe his router is slowly dying? Maybe he is trapped in the downward spiral of corrosion and oxidation causing resistance which causes more localized heating, and that new heat causes and accelerates more corrosion and more oxidation, which causes yet more localized heat, which causes yet more corrosion and yet more degradation of signal quality and increasing loss of bandwidth and loss of speed?

The symptoms say that router settings do not seem to be a central issue.

I don't know if you can actually call a "local" Infinitum tech support number; I haven't heard of such a thing. The only option is to go into the office, for that kind of localism. The 800 number is Mexico City, and they handle all of Mexico. Of course, they contact local repair technicians for housecalls.

You are right. I talked to my rental manager and she called Mex City to report the problem. I connected my modem to the wire that comes from the pole to eliminate house wiring. It runs around 1mb everywhere.on the property. Hopefully, someone will come out in a few days.

I'm going to get the cable Internet also and try them both for several Months to see which works best in my area.

Has anyone who gets TV on Dish here seen the Dish advertisements from Dish Satelite Internet?

Is it possible to get it here? I know that those of us who get Dish TV get it through some "special magic way" so don't know if that would work, but was wondering since they say you can get it anywhere in their ads.

Of course my Dish goes off if it even looks like rain and I cannot get my premium channels after 5 pm but it would be good during the day.

Contacted some of my neighbors yesterday and everyone I talked to were getting 1 M or less. They have tried for weeks to get the speed on our street increased to what we are paying for.

One guy ( half block from my house) switched to cable and even though he's paying a premium price, he's getting 9.8 M

Hope to get cable next week. May take Months for Telmex to get the problem fixed

Does NOT work every time. Many reports of people paying for 10, getting 5, so ask Telmex to cut them down to the $599 peso package. Next thing they know they are getting 2.

I have spent many hours with the Telmex people, both in the office and at my house. ComputerGuy is right on when he says that the local people are less than useless at resolving problems. The responses are entirely random and ineffective. Unfortunately, the only result I have had from Mexico City is to schedule a visit from the local guys.
