Need Advice! How to entertain Grandgirls (20/22) while in Ajijic?? Help!!

Recommended Posts

Hi Everybody! I'm hoping I can get some help as so many of you have come through for me before. I'm bringing my two granddaughters, 20 and 22 to Ajijic before they go back to college and am wondering how I entertain them (and keep them safe) while staying with me in the village.

We have the pool but then what? They are both crafty and I've thought of some weaving or other type lessons. Then what? Also, any advice on how to keep them safe. I have already cautioned them not to wear their 'resort' clothes and not to wander off without Grandma. They are both tall gorgeous girls....haha do I sound like a Grandmother?!

Their only view of Mexico so far has been the all inclusive resorts and they're excited to see the 'real' Mexico and have been learning some Spanish in anticipation. I'm happy they want to spend time with me and share my new adventure and explore a different culture but want this to be a good experience so need a plan.

Appreciate any and all suggestions. Any activities in the village and perhaps any side trips. I know they have an interest in the history of Mexico and perhaps seeing some ruins or / ? but I'm at a loss there. This forum has bailed me out before with excellent help. Thanks in advance...

Intensive Spanish Lessons? Even if they have to travel to Guadalajara every day for a few hours would be well worth it. They are still young enough to pick it up really quickly and having a good grasp of Spanish will be invaluable to their future careers.

Are they with you the whole summer? If so they could be halfway on their way to fluency by then, and it might motivate them to want to come back and visit Granny next year to follow up!

Well I logged on to post a few touristy suggestions but if they are interested in learning Spanish, you (or they) should talk to the 2 young Mexicans who run Ole Spanish on Revolution just north of the carreterra. Us "old gals" love Gabriel & Alex. They have really fun classes for all levels.

Now on to other things

! - day at Baleaneros Spa in San Juan Cosala

2- mani pedis at a local shop

3- Charter Club has really good day or overnight tours. get a brochure or go on line.

4 - Guad el Centro for historic stuff or Gallerias Mall

5 - Guad zoo - Haven't been yet but its supposed to be good

6- Wednesday Tienguis

We actually took a 21 yr old nephew (tough guy, he thinks) to the folkloric ballet in Guad and he enjoyed it!! I am sure they will have a nice time

Guadalajara Centro & Mercado Libertad, etc.

Tonala on a Thursday or Sunday

Tlaquepaque on a weekend: 2PM Lunch at El Patio with Mariachi Feminil at 3PM, then El Parian until 5PM.

Tequila for a day, or overnight, if you drink.

Mazamitla and/or Tapalpa for a mountain experience.

Hot springs anywhere you wish.

Drive around the lake, or just east of Chapala to San Pedro, Poncitlan and home via the GDL-Chapala highway.

An afternoon locally on the Chapala Malecon with dinner at one of the restaurants on the east pier; like Cozumel with margaritas.

It all depends on your grand daughters. What they like to do what they are like, at their age I was living on my own working and putting myself through college in a foreign country, Are they independent or home bodies? They are your grand-daughters you should talk to their parents and to them and see what will interest them .

The Spanish classes is a good idea. At that age young people like to meet other young people so network maybe someone else has children or grand children that age, maybe neighbors.

Sit down with them and see what they like to do.

Best of all Ideas posted so far- my past guests found staying around Lakeside really boring after 24 hours

young girls will love the Tianguis in Tonala

Andares Mall on Friday or Saturday nites- Shopping at Puerto Hierro-Dinner, Casino or movies - a good example to see how the other half of Mexico lives at night - very safe open til 2am or later

Wow! Thanks everybody...I'm feeling better already. Really want this to be a good experience as they work so hard at college. Won't ask 'The Parents' though as my son is way too overprotective and is not keen on me taking them to Mexico at all. He is not invited! We want to have fun!! Good suggestions and I will sit with the girls tonight and see what excites them.

Thanks again, this site is amazing. I love Ajijic and can't wait to get back. We are in Canada and STILL no summer weather. June has been awful...homesick for the village. End of July here we come and I am booking the girls one way tickets so they can leave anytime...or stay as long as they like. Fingers crossed they love it as much as I do...

Where at the Round Pyramids? To heck with sending them to the Tall Boys....I'm going too!!! But, you're all right, they are adults and probably have some of their own ideas of fun. We have traveled with these girls a lot and always have a good time but I will be there alone with them as GP can't make it so I want to have a plan. Printing out the suggestions...

If they are into Sports take them to Cristinia Park in Chapala on Tuesday/Thursday or Saturday at 10am to play Volleyball, good way to meet people of all ages.

most suggestions were good. i would pass on spanish lessons. learning a language dosnt sound like a fun thing, thats school. the mall is good, andares etc. but you need to pick them up @ night. or have a driver waiting for them. i was here when i was younger too (in guad also lakeside). for me it was a health exercise vacation @lakeside. horse riding, swimming, dinner out, ice skating in guad, massage, etc. dont ever let then take the public bus to guad regardless of what people say. that bus station should be a no go zone.

Learning Spanish will open up another world to them, both in Mexico and back home and if the classes and teachers are good, learning Spanish can be loads of fun and a great way to meet other people. If they speak some Spanish, or even if the don't why shouldn't they ride the bus?

if these were my daughters or grandchildren i would not let them go to that bus station. i would want the best for them, car service ect. they sound like 2 beautiful educated young women, why should they rough it. public bus in mexico is a public bus in mexico. if they are in college, then they may want to get out of the classroom, thats why spanish may not be right. then again, its their choice.

I reread the OP and am unsure as to how long they would actually be here? If just a couple of months, probably not long enough to study Spanish to good effect.

I'll tell ya what, Bennie, if a couple of old folks like us can ride the bus to Guad, and then take a city bus to the Mercado, these girls are sure to be quite capable of it and they can pick up a cab at the Old bus station to go where they want in GDL. Doing stuff like that is what makes trips to foreign countries fun. When we were that age, we looked for those kinds of adventures. All they need is some coaching about getting on the Directo and using cabs in GDL.

They aren't children, fer crying out loud.

Also, if they are here for several months, Guanjuato, Hildalgo and San Miguel, where the Mexican revolution began. They can take the first class bus from GDL.

They might like some spots in Guadalajara better, maybe they can ride in with me sometime and we can take them to some high end spots such as Andares and places in Providencia.

If they're athletic they might like the Climbing Center in Ajijic .Sorry but I don't know how age appropriate it is. The water park out in Aguascalientes is another option. It's a water park with hot springs water.

Thanks everybody! The girls are not sporty but academic and work very hard at school. As I mentioned the parents are very protective so when the girls are with me I like them to relax and have some fun so lots of good suggestions. We are coming for month of August and I haven't furnished my place there yet either so maybe we can do some travel to Guad for shopping and fun.

I'm so amazed at this site and how everyone has come through for me on a few different issues. I was so worried the girls might be bored! They will have an interest in learning some spanish as the 20 yr old has taken it in high school and enjoyed it. I'd be interested in them meeting some people their age and getting a different prospective on life and cultures.

I'm excited now! Last trip down was just work work work but this trip will be fun and really getting to know the village. I will probably stay longer but girls have to be back for college. Thanks again for all the extra efforts. Love this blog!!
