bennie
homesweethome, i dont deal w/people like the leather man. yes, i have met many businesses that operate that way, i wont work w/them, if they dont show respect. re read my 1st post: after encounter #2 i would move on. the story about the basket was to show that mexicans are not all the same. many years ago i bought fabric &was in the process of having clothes made. (no deposite, they had my fabric). the 1st piece was ready no problem. the 5 other pieces sat there for 4 months. they even called me to say, "dont come not ready" or dont come "its a holiday". finally i went onto the workshop, took them off the rack, calmly walked out. the owner happended to be there, & was shocked. i got into a taxie & left. this is a very popular place, they were used to snow birds, hoped i would leave. i brought the unfinished clothes somewhere else, all done in less than a week. there are always alternatives, but if you are ok w/this its your choice. MyHomeSweetHome
try jose at the shop on the southside of the ajijic plaza at "Baul de Fernanda". he does good leather work. Thank you for the suggestion, have you had work done by him and how was the turn around time?
MyHomeSweetHome
purse saga update: I went down to the Ajijic plaza during the lunch hour but spoke with Jose's cousin, who said he sells nice things that are already made and wouldn't be able to help me...suggested I go to the guy on the carretera who made a nice leather jacket for her husband...oh boy...I explained the situation and all three there said that was not good of the shop. I said, you're all Mexican, tell me how can I motivate him? (Being these are 3 locals in their 50's -60's, they know how to do things Mexican.) It does no good to be angry, not healthy, nor be too nice, I'm still stressing about it. They agreed, will get the same response. So it was suggested I asked very nicely, in the Mexican way, "PLEASE, will you make it?" The one gal told me to say I had to go somewhere, even if I had to say a little lie. lol I said I couldn't do that but there is an upcoming trip that I'd like to take IF I had the bag. They encouraged me to go back today and talk to him. So, I did. Sending the work out was also a fib. He said he thought that person was doing some work but wasn't doing anything, I told him I can't stress out about this because it's not healthy, that I'm not going to be angry but I need to find someone that will make the bags even if I have to go to Guadalajara. I asked him why was he pushing other jobs in front of mine? I said that I knew he could do this job if he wanted to. He said the problem is the material we need for the purses. The leather can't be soft, it has to be more stiff. I said well, show me what you have. He said he didn't have anything. I said, well, can't you improvise with this other softer leather? He said for us to come in on Saturday to look at the material he has and he can start working on the purses very slowly, not quickly. I know these purses are more detailed than the flat one's he's always making. My dil told me that if material is the problem, we can go to Guadalajara ourselves and buy the material so he can make the purses. Discount the cost of material and gas from the price of the bags. I told her, we can discuss that Saturday, if he once again, has nothing for us. If we do go to Guadalajara and we find another store that can do this job, great, but what if that store is exactly like this guy? Then we'd be stuck driving back and forth trying to motivate the person to do the work. Unless there is another suggestion for a good leather place here, I don't have another option but to wait it out. He said there's no other leather factory around here. bennie
you are now a willing hostage. the plot thickens..... are you giving him more $? great mini seris, same story same characters, but this one will be looonnggg thread. they say where theres a beginning theres an end. maybe not in this case. the 2 of you were made for each other. i thought this was about a purse? let us know, when that arrives. MyHomeSweetHome
no way, no more $, i know that game. Initially he asked for 1/2, then it was anything...he got less than 1/2, told me it wasn't anything but he asked for anything. I know he doesn't have the material. If I get the purses within a month or sooner, I'll be happy. It's out there, he's the best leather worker in town, he'll do the job if he wants to. I can see my dil and I going material shopping but lets see his face when we offer, taking off the prices of material off the price of the bags. I imagine him saying he knows where to go for a discount, which as far as I'm concerned, send us with a note that we're from his shop. What would have been nice bennie, is if you would have had an experience with this leather shop to share a personal experience, why don't you stop by and say hello. Ask him if he could give you a price for a dog carrier and what the turn around time would be? Tell it's for a St Bernard. lol
Wheels
he does make a real good jacket. He is much better at that.
bennie
homesweethome, i would not go into that place, dont like cheap leather, never owned a dog, or find these people interesting. i do find your topic entertaining. i see you are ready to spend more $$$! as you will buy materials. why not just take him to dinner, give him the materials, get back to us. you may have to start another topic when they lock the thread. this will be a long long story. MyHomeSweetHome
Bennie, let this be comedy relief at my expense, i don't mind. The dog is theraputic, keeps my mind off of other stressful things and persistance never hurt me, i'm just not willing to lose hair over it, i can wait patiently if i know there's a good ending. If he has nothing Saturday, I'll ask for my money back and look elsewhere.
virgogirl
Honey, you don't need to get in any thicker and deeper with this type of a joker. He's not the only person in the world that does leather and I regret mentioning the place to you. You might consider putting all this time and effort into just seeking out another custom leather worker. Obviously, you should be getting your money back and moving on. You give him materials and the propensity for ripoff is higher than the sky. It doesn't add up to a healthy situation for you. T
bennie
virgogirl: "homesweethome" said this keeps her "mind off stressful things". she likes it, leave her alone. meanwhile, i feel a bit sorry for the dog. when the leatherman gets tired of her, he will say "vamose"! (or whatever the word is).
Wookie
We ordered a simple eye patch that my husband. Was told it would be ready the next day, next day, next day. Never returned after the 3rd time. Will never buy or order again at this shop. This was the shop next to Danny's Restaurant in Ajijic.
bruno
it's pretty obvious to me that it's time to "let it go". this is not a healthy experience. been there done that. definitely a part of the culture i don't appreciate. i learned that a lot of mexicans will always say "YES,they CAN DO". because of pride, or just to seize an opportunity, and then try to figure out the"HOW" sometime later. bennie
bruno, not all do that. some are very honest & professional. if they dont like expats, AND are having a bad day, thats what you get, they stick-it-to-you. it's also ignorant behavior, this is not the top tier of mexico. i suppose once in a while this leather guy will do a job when he is slow as he wants to the rest of the $. sometimes its easier to take the dep & not do the job, if it is busy. either way it looks like leather man is the winner in this case. he plays a better game. whether this is "healthy" or not, is up to homesweethome. behnwau
This is what happened in a period of 1 year. I ordered leather pants. I gave $1000 peso deposit on $1200 peso quote. The pants were made but not the leather I ordered, in 3 weeks. Many mananas no replacement pants so I asked for a chaleco instead and selected a leather doo rag or kiss my money goodbye.Finito, Got the pants in Tlacapaque. For bennie. This leather guy is not dishonest,he is merely incompetent on occasion. He has done good work.
bennie
behnwau, maybe he can do good work. but he is NOT honest, he takes $ & does not tell the customer the real story. my shoe man will say, "i wont have those materials untill 2 weeks, i have to go to guad". (w/me there is no deposite required but w/others yes). i call him sometimes first before i bring the shoes, other times i just drop off. he will give an "honest" answer as to when he will have them ready. i call before picking up, i get his weekly scedule, so i know when he is closed. in general i stay while he does the work, he knows its hard for me to makes trips back & forth. he likes getting the cash right away, he will put me ahead of the other jobs. as a favor to him, i make telephone calls for him in english when i get home. not all small business people in small villages are idxxts. I gave you an example of him being honest. What part of that do you not understand? Your shoe maker nonsense has nothing to do with anything about the leather guy. I didn't get what I wanted but i got my money's worth another way which is also what I wanted, plus a bonus product. Why don't you go buy the leather pants i rejected? Maybe they're still there. If he was dishonest with you, give us the example.

bennie
benhwau, you said period of "one year"? one year of negoiation? you still didnt get the correct pants, he tried putting it over on you. your man doesnt pay w/a full deck. next case: lets wait untill tomarrow (saturday) & see the prognosis w/homesweethome. that dog must be really uncomfortable. suzanjo
My brother tells a story about this leather guy. ,after many delays and making the wrong product, my bro insists and the guy made the purse right then, in front of him. No basis for the long delay at all! Never again!
