Problems Mexican buying car with non-Jalisco plates

Recommended Posts

We have been car shopping and have finally found exactly what we want EXCEPT that the car has D.F. plates and we would need to transfer them to Jalisco plates. Somewhere at the back of my mind, I seem to remember reading (years ago) that this might be problematic.

To date, all cars we have purchased here have had Jalisco plates, so we've never encountered this situation. Has anyone else had experience with transferring plates from another Mexican state to Jalisco plates?? Any advice to offer??? Thanks!

P.S. I made a mistake in the title, but it cannot be edited. I meant to say: Problem Buying Mexican Car With Non-Jalisco plates

The way I mistakenly worded it makes me sound like I am a Mexican, when I;m not. Sorry for the confusion.

We bought a new car in Michoacán, with Michoacán plates. When we later moved to the DF, we changed the plates to DF plates. It was a minor hassle, but certainly not a problem.

The first order of business is to apply for Jalisco plates. You'll want them at the ready after you finish the second step. The second order of business is to dar de baja las placas (make inactive and return the plates) in the DF. You might be able to do the second step first. Just remember that it is your job as the buyer to disactivate and return the DF plates, unless you specifically accompany the seller to take care of it.

Several years ago I bought a car in Zacataceas (sp?). As I recall I needed to be at the license place in Guad really REALLY early in the morning. I ended up usung an attorney to do it. She had a relative in Guad, went the nite before, got up at 4am and went to get the plates. Please don't ask me why, its just the way it is - long lines maybe.

We also found just the right car about 3 years ago.it also had DF plates. We spent 6 weeks going round and round with multiple trips to GUAD and also the early morning thing. After the 6 weeks we finally said f*** it and looked for and found a similar car with Jalisco plates.

Pain in the butt to change plates, expect to wait 6 hours plus in Guadalajara and pay for and bring a translator and that assumes all is in order as if it is not you can pay fines, extra fees and even have your car impounded and be arrested if something is not in order.
