I am interested in starting a support group and/or network for persons with Diabetes and their spouses/partners.

I am finding that it is a bit tricky at times to make certain dietary and life-style modification recommendations to my patients and

friends whom are dealing with this horrible but manageable disease. Some people I've seen have been managing quite well while

others seem to be completely lost when it comes to diet and exercise.

In my past experience it has been helpful for persons who are dealing with diabetes as a patient or who live with somebody with diabetes to have a place to exchange ideas and offer support to one another rather than be told by their doctor/healthcare provider what to do. I think that patients are often encouraged and motivated by the success stories of others who are dealing with similar issues.

I was thinking of offering a space with my professional guidance once a month and limiting it to initially 10-20 people to start off such a group. I would volunteer my services and medical knowledge to answer any questions and clear up any misconceptions that there may exist. In the building I work at there is a limited amount of space but after the initial meeting, folks can perhaps suggest of another

venue to meet regularly.

Is there already such a group in the LAKESIDE AREA? If there is such a group, I'd like the information to be able to refer patients to it.

If not, can I see a virtual show of hands posted or via PM that would be interested in such a group/network?

I don't think there is such a group. But it sure would be helpful also to us pre-diabetic type two candidates. It was a bitch loosing weight and working out and lowering my A1C from 6.5 to 5.4 to 5.7. And I'm putting on more weight and as I grow older and it becomes harder and harder to find ways to work out without doing harm to this joint are that etc.

If such a group were to start, I would love to participate.

Thanks so much for your response Pete.

Losing weight and staying in shape gets a lot harder after you hit your 30's and gets harder over time.

I'll keep monitoring for more interest and perhaps by the end of the month I'd like to start the first of a monthly gathering.

I'll keep you posted.

That's great. You have a great success story and I'm sure that others could greatly benefit from your story. I'm sure you have some tips on how you achieved those goals.

Could you PM me with your information so I could contact you when I gather at least 8-10 people who would be interested and then provide the information where it would be meeting and when.

I just posted a question on diabetic foot care. My husband needs his nails cut but won't let me do them He is 84 sith early dementia.

Can you be ofny help

Yes. I can be of help. Please PM me for more information or via my email: Chapalamed@gmail.com

Thanks.

Definitely interrested.

I have about 5-6 persons who are interested. I would ideally like about 8-10. There would be no charge and I would offer my knowledge free of charge. I would like there to be a time and space where others can exchange ideas and success stories to motivate others whom face the challenges with being an EXPAT and a Diabetic in the Lakeside area.

I had a couple of my diabetic patients meet today and exchange some of their success stories and answer each others' questions. I think that all who were involved found it very productive.

Now think I have at least 8 persons who are interested. If you can PM or email me at CHAPALAMED@gmail.com to confirm so I can have enough seating available, that would be great. I was thinking perhaps next Thrus. or Sat. as a potential first day to meet.
