More Liana
Take them to El Chololo for birria--preferably on a Sunday afternoon, when the joint is jumping. The restaurant seats about 1000 people and they turn the tables FOUR times on Sundays. Mariachis play and happiness rules. There is nowhere that's more traditionally Mexican than this! It's on the Chapala/Guadalajara highway, south of the airport near the El Salto exit.
Doolittle
That's "Chololo 4" and we love it! We've been there on some pretty busy Friday evenings too!
Adelle
I'll vote heavily in favor of the following: Viva Mexico Los Cinco Potrillos El Zapote You'll be particularly happy if you try them all. We haven't tried Viva Mexico, but obviously need to since your #2 and #3 suggestions are two of our favorites. We were pleasantly surprised that there is such a wonderful restaurant in Ixtlahuacan...a bit of a drive but well worth it. Their parillada mixta (minus pulpo which we don't like) with grilled beef, chicken, whopper shrimp & veggies is great. It comes to our table sizzling, and serves enough for 3-4. I have also discovered you can order anything there, whether on the menu or not. For example, they will quick-fry their delicious burritos, making it a chimichanga of sorts. El Zapote also does indeed have excellent traditionall Mexican food. Try their chiles rellenos.
