Does anyone have a ballpark in USD of the cost to run a hot tub in Ajijic? The guy who rented us the air bnb we are steying in charged us 1000 pesos per day of use.? He said he was only recouping his boiler cost.  This seems excessive. It is a beautiful place but before i suggest it to others, i want to know if he was honest with me.

The electricity to run a hot tub, added to the overall usage of house, doesn't come close to $1000mp per day. That would be $30,000 per month. If there is a solar electric system, then the cost is negligible.

Electricity is one thing. But propane to heat the "boiler" could very well run his costs up immensely, especially if owner keeps the heat constant 24/7 so guests can use at will.

In the heat these days, maybe he could turn the "boiler" off and you could simply use it as a jetted way to cool off? 🤣

In the 1980's we owned a motel with a large pool in a HOT area (especially summers). City sent inspectors around every 2 weeks to test the water for purity, clarity, and overall chemical maintenance.  More than once the testing people told us about how they would NEVER get in a "public" hot tub, because they are nothing more than breeding grounds for all kinds of very nasty things. (Water temp works against even the best chemical maintenance   and balance).

I would like to believe that Air BnB woulds require some level of due diligence in this same area, regardless of country.

  • 2 weeks later...

On average, a HT heater/pump will use ~3000Watts or 3kW of power; at $3 pesos for a kWhr of power (high end), that is $9 pesos per continuous hour of running and multiplied by 24 hrs, $216 pesos a day.

There are bigger heaters and smaller heaters and also the heater would NEVER run 24/7.

Also, if if it would run 3kWhr continuously, I found on the internet that 1kWhr = 0.145 L of LPG

So, 3 X 24hrs = 72kWhrs/day

72 X 0.145L = 10.44L/day running continuously. But to be fair, a gas water heater is maybe 65% efficient (electric heaters are ~99% efficient), so you may use 16L of LPG... at roughly $12 pesos per L that would be $192 pesos a day.

Maybe I am wrong in my calculations... I invite criticism.
