  1. We're on our 2nd Honda Fit. The first we brought down from the US, but couldn't keep because it was from Japan and we had to sell when we went permanente. Loved it enough that we got another, made here in MX. We are sad that they're not going to be made any more since we'd probably buy another when the time comes. That said, things we like about the Fit: 1. Flexible enough seating and plenty of headroom for both myself (5'1") and my husband (6'0"). 2. Lots of visibility through many windows, which is important when driving around Lakeside, and when parking or backing out of parking. 3. Small turning radius makes it much easier to parallel park on super narrow streets. 4. Plenty of space inside to carry just about anything we need to carry, including the rear seating surfaces that tilt upward, providing space for tall items like plants. 5. Unless we're carrying passengers or a heavy load, we can manage almost any tope we've found, as long as we slow down enough and are careful. 6. Top model has almost all the niceties we need... electric mirrors, windows, cruise control, Bluetooth radio, CD, etc. (do wish it had a backup camera, though) 7. I like the CV transmission with its smooth shifting 8. We've had good luck getting it worked on when needed, although part of this is from using S&S to get it serviced 9. Quiet inside, and hasn't developed many squeaks or rattles, even though we've had accidents in it. 10. Econo mode makes it pretty fuel efficient. 11. Pretty easy to get in and out, even with my bad knees and cane, unless you happen to have a really odd parking spot 12. Insurance cost is reasonable 13. Reliable and trouble-free for the most part 14. Resale on our first Fit was surprisingly good, and I suspect this one will be as well Things we don't like as much about the Fit: 1. Seats can get a bit uncomfortable on long drives... like 4+ hours. Pillows and extra padding help. 2. Wish it had a backup camera, although I suspect one could be added if we really looked 3. The cup holders (quite a few) could be placed better, depending on what you're carrying 4. Since it's lower to the ground than some cars, I have to be very careful when going over dips and steeply angled surfaces When we moved here, we also had a Pontiac Vibe (Pontiac version of Toyota Matrix), which we loved for various reasons. However, even though it wasn't very large, we couldn't parallel park it on narrow streets because of the turning radius and the fact that the nose was just long enough that the front would catch on a curb when it swung out. So even though there are "small" cars that might be good, one of OUR tests when buying would be whether a new car would be maneuverable enough and have enough visibility to get it parked in the village when needed. Another consideration is insurance cost. According to our agent, insurance follows the vehicle in MX, not the driver. And insurance cost is based on consolidated costs the company has to pay for that same type of vehicle over the previous year (or historically). Therefore, surprisingly, some of the more expensive vehicles to insure are ones that are commonly used by taxis or professional drivers since there are lots of them, they're frequently stolen or have parts stolen off them, and they have a higher than normal accident rate. Doesn't mean these are bad cars, but just that the insurance costs are higher than one would expect. Therefore, another lesson we learned when car shopping in the future is to be sure and check what insurance will cost for a particular vehicle before purchasing it. Overall, if we were shopping today I'd certainly check to see if there were any leftover Fits still available and grab one if so. It fits our needs and lifestyle quite nicely, but everyone is different of course. Happy shopping!
  2. We flew out of GDL at the beginning of this month and returned via CBX bridge at San Diego. At GDL, the INM office had us fill out just PART of the form, but it was needed. We kept the other half for re-entry since we were coming back a different way. At least for now, DO GO to the INM window to inquire and fill out paperwork before heading to your airline counter or gate.
  3. Did you know some people get enjoyment from watching the chaos they cause when others react to them flinging do-do? They specialize in stirring the pot so they can watch others scramble when it boils over. The best way to handle these "Trolls" is to simply ignore them, as difficult as that may be... They know what buttons to push to get reactions they need to feed their desire for attention! Discussion groups are the bridges these Trolls hide under. Can YOU cross the bridge without feeding the Trolls? Not pointing any fingers, but I'm sure we can all think of some people (plural) who fit the mold. This board is a valuable resource for people seeking useful information, but I left for quite awhile because of the number of discussions that turned into Troll feeding frenzies. When you respond to a post, here or elsewhere, please take a moment to consider whether you might be bait, with somebody laughing their butt off because they managed to push your buttons. And THANKS to all of the wonderful people who do their best to be helpful in their positive posts, comments and moderation. Your value to the community IS recognized, even if it's not stated often enough! 👍
  4. Another vote here for Dr. Claudia. My husband and I each had both eyes done (each eye on a separate day... she will NOT do both at once). As others have said, preliminary work is done in the Chapala office, which is a problem if you can't climb stairs. If stairs are an issue, I assume she could do the preliminaries in Guad, where the surgery is done, but you'd have to check with them. You may not want to go to Guad, but consider this... how much is your eyesight worth? Cataract surgery isn't something you want to go bad, so it's critical to have the best care possible, and having somebody drive you to Guad a few times to get that is a SMALL price to pay for having things done correctly! We had a neighbor who had her cataract surgery done by another (NOT Dr. Claudia) surgeon who some people have had good luck with. That doctor messed up her eyes so badly that nobody here could repair the damage. She ended up having to sell her house and move back to the US for specialized work so she could have somewhat normal vision again. I cringe every time I see people recommend the doctor who damaged her eyes, but sometimes it works. Beware! I have since heard other word-of-mouth horror stories about that same doctor. With the strong libel laws here in Mexico, you are not likely to find published negative comments about BAD doctors, but it's helpful when you find so many positive reports about a GOOD one! Pay attention, and don't cut corners when it comes to the possibility of losing your vision. (And, no... don't PM me for a name since I would be concerned about those same libel laws myself. Just pay attention to the positives!) By the way, we were told that there's a law requiring cataract surgery NOT be done on both eyes at once, just in case something were to go wrong... you wouldn't want to endanger both eyes at once. It's a little inconvenient having to mess with one corrected eye and one uncorrected for a few days between, but it's for the best. Grin and bear it. Best of luck on your research and eventual surgery.

  7. Ask at the herb shop downstairs from there. I believe that business and the office supply store are run by family members of the lady who ran Maquina. After she closed, she just sold pastries out of the shop downstairs (run by her mother, I believe). The building (and I think the train decorations) is owned by another relative. Note that I may have my facts all messed up, but there is some connection between the 3 businesses, so they might know how to put you in touch.
  8. Are these generators noisy when running, like a gas-powered unit would be? If the B&S unit has been so reliable, why would one choose the Generac... features? price?
  9. Development is about a mile or so west of where we currently live. We visited some time back... maybe 3-4 years ago. Gathered lots of info and toured one of the individual home units (multi-story buildings weren't near being ready to tour). Front medical/commercial area wasn't really started. They are certainly making progress on construction, but it's slow. I suspect they were behind schedule to begin with, then covid hit and caused further delays. Although you can't look inside, you can use Google Street View to "walk" up and down in front of the development and see progress from the Carretera. I don't know if this is still the case, but we do like Desherman's attention to detail and construction methods, so we considered that a plus in terms of how well made the buildings would be. I don't know if they're still doing the construction. We liked the concept, which is much like the continuing-care place my parents live at in Fullerton, CA. Cost for Pueblita would be much less than my parents are spending for what sounded like similar (but smaller) facilities and care/services. Price would be high compared to other homes Lakeside, but you have to include the value of other facilities and services, and it's all relative, depending on what you're comparing it to. That's on paper, of course, and I understand their plans for handling things, plus costs, have changed since we toured. You'd have to keep tabs on how they intend to sell and manage once the dust settles. We knew one gentleman who lived in our current condo development who felt it was a good deal and put down a deposit. Unfortunately, he died before he could move in, partly because of delays in construction, partly because he may have waited a bit too long to decide. I don't know what happened with his deposit, but he never got to use the facilities. As for the home that we toured... we thought the floor plan was pretty nice. Rather light on storage space inside, which is typical here in Mexico, but this had less than where we live now. Plan to downsize before you move in. There was a nice, large bodega storage space outside in the (single) carport area, although that's not convenient for items you'd need access to frequently. Choices on finishes (tile, cabinets, etc) were pretty limited and I wasn't crazy about the offerings, but that's personal preference. At the time, they would not allow customization with your own choices since the home wouldn't actually belong to you. All on one level, with consideration for wheelchair accessibility. It would certainly be livable, and we might still consider a move there at some point, depending on how things stand if/when we decide to move into someplace with more care. We would NOT buy into someplace like this and pay for the promise of future facilities and services when we're getting to a point where we might not live long enough to use them! I suggest you only consider the value of what you can see and use as of your move-in date. Depending on your timeframe, remember that units are being sold to older folks who will be "moving on" with some regularity, so pre-owned units WILL be available in the future (although possibly on a waiting list, depending on popularity). We live in the center of our condo development and don't have a lot of problem with noise, although we do hear music and cohetes from nearby eventos when things are going on. Pueblita single homes are closer to the road than where we live, so I suspect there might be more road noise. I don't know if there are event centers nearby, but one can pop up at any time. The multi-story buildings are further from the road, so they might be more quiet, but still very visible from the highway with large trucks going by. You'd have to visit and put the place to an "ear test" if you have concerns about sonic ambiance, and/or ask people who already live there already. West Ajijic and the area around Pueblita is growing fairly rapidly. When we moved to Los Sabinos, people warned that we would be too far away from facilities and shopping, but that's no longer the case. There are several restaurants in the area now, and a new Pancho's market will be just 1 minute from Pueblita, to be finished later this year. Along with the on-site facilities, you shouldn't have any problem with basic needs for dining and grocery shopping. The medical facilities will be a big plus, as long as the doctors and care are competent... research and ask. Since covid, so many places deliver as well, so I'd feel comfortable saying this is a good location, with easy access to Jocotepec, if needed, and up into Guadalajara for shopping and such. Hope this helps!
  10. In terms of property damage... We figure the money we save by not paying for insurance will cover costs for anything that might burn (not much) or be damaged by minor tremors. Water damage isn't very likely as 10 years experience has shown the heavy water comes down an arroyo to the west of where we live. It's flooded the carretera and homes below where we live, but passes by our development with minimal damage to some yards, but none to houses. If somebody breaks in and steals "things" from the house, again we can replace them with money saved by not having insurance. I can see where liability insurance for worker injuries could be useful for peace of mind, but we've been fortunate so far that workers have been careful. If any sustain fairly minor injuries, we would cover their medical costs out of pocket. Insurance for something more major would be the only reason for us to have insurance.

  13. Just a guess that there's extra heavy drain on the system today with so many people in town. Been the same since late afternoon in West Ajijic as well.

  15. If you don't yet have a doctor in Mexico, you might contact one to get established with them (via email, phone, etc). Once you've done this, you can inquire about the availability of your medication, and whether an alternative is advised. It sounds like you've done thorough research about the meds available in Canada and the US, but it's possible there might be something in Mexico that's not available up north. I've found this to be the case with one medication I'm taking. Best of luck with your research!
  16. In various areas of Mexico, people are attacking medical workers who they think have been in contact with COVID cases. How do you think they might react to people who have actually been tested and confirmed? Please stop calling for information on the specific patients... those in charge are probably doing as much as they can to trace any contacts, but their options are limited. We should not put people in danger by "outing" them as infected. The best strategy is to assume ANYONE you come in contact with may have been exposed, and may therefore expose you to infection. Take necessary precautions... masks, hand-washing, disinfecting, etc. Stay home if you are concerned or in a high-risk group. The virus IS here, and probably has been for awhile. It will CONTINUE to be here for months or even years. We need to learn to deal with it rationally, without panic, and without treating others as though they're the enemy. Please be kind to those around you, and be considerate of the need for privacy. Digital hugs to all!

  19. We were just there, about 30 mins ago, where police had part of the Malecon taped off. Forensics team brought a body bag and they pulled a man's body from the lake. Felt so bad for a lady there who was sobbing, and for her family/friends who were also there. A sad scene. I read yesterday that a man went missing along the shore when he went into the water to rescue his son, who was in difficulty... wondering if this is the man. I'm sure we'll get more news with details later. 😢 By the way, I understand that crime reporting is not permitted here, but thought this wasn't necessarily a crime. If this post is over the line, please feel free to delete, and accept my apologies.

  21. I have been asked to give a presentation on the Telmex fiber option for our Council meeting this coming Saturday. If anyone here has EXPERIENCE working with Telmex in a condo environment with underground utilities, I would appreciate input on the following (sending a PM is fine): How many houses in your condo? Cost for bringing Telmex fiber into your development, up to the houses? If installed already, what speeds you're getting at houses with fiber? Who your contact person is at Telmex so we can get in touch for info and a quote? All responses are optional, of course, and any additional input would be helpful for me to discuss with our residents and Council members. Thanks! Heather
  22. I was on a committee at our condo (Los Sabinos) to investigate having iLox fiber installed here. As others have said, they would not use existing duct/conduits, so we would have needed to install new infrastructure, either underground (expensive, requiring roads to be torn up) or along our common walls (unsightly, especially for the large junction boxes). Since most homeowners here find Telmex to be adequate, and many are part-time residents who don't use Internet that much, there wasn't enough support to make a special assessment to bring in iLox fiber. This Telmex option sounds like a reasonable alternative, with minimal initial cost, minimal disruption, and no requirement for homeowners to switch service if they're not interested. I'd like to recommend that our Board contact somebody for additional information and a quote. Someone who has been involved at other developments... do you have contact information at Telmex? Also, for anybody who already has Telmex fiber (in a condo or elsewhere), can you comment on your experience with it and let us know what speeds you're getting? Thanks for any input!
  23. Does anybody know if Telmex is able to use the existing infrastructure (underground) in the development, or if they're having to install something new? I live in another development with underground utilities and iLox would require that we put in new ducts/conduit for their use, which has been a major stumbling block with residents. If Telmex can use their existing infrastructure to bring in fiber, it might make high speed Internet more sellable. Curious how it's being handled in Puerta Arroyo.
