  1. You can buy prepaid sim cards for EU from Amazon.
  2. I'm a big fan of Baja Norte too, but the huge marlin stuffed deep fried battered banana pepper at Lobo is stellar. Here's a photo of a naked one, before adding Lobo's various fixin's.
  3. Over the past 3+ months I've checked out drug prices for 5 different drugs at Farmacia Guadalajara, Walmart, La Cristina. They were all about the same; the minor price differences weren't worth a special trip. I buy what I need, when I need them, wherever is closest or when I can combine with other shopping needs. fyi, I won't buy similares.
  4. We go here at least once a week. Best tuna in town these days. Emphasis on seafood but other offerings as well. Reasonable prices. Beautiful place to sit, friendly and competent service. In Ajijic on Javier Mina, just south of the carretera. Here's camarón ceviche and tuna tiradito.
  5. If your HOA fees cover your trash pickup, then your beef is with them, not the municipio.
  6. The RC homepage says this; sounds like they pick up your trash out of your HOA fees.....you should complain to them I guess. The Raquet Club truck picks up garbage that is put out at the curb in plastic bags on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. On Thursdays garden refuse is picked up and should also have a green tie on the bag. In some areas the truck arrives shortly after 8:00 a.m. to pick up while in others, the truck might not arrive until 11:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. However, the objective is to get our garbage out on the curb before 8:00 a.m., so make sure your garbage is available for early pick-up.
  7. But those taxes don't go to local trash pickup. Mostly it's real estate taxes that are earmarked for trash service which are very low here. If your beef is with the trash program, have you gone to your local Delegación? I have found the Ajijic Delegación to be helpful in these sort of issues. It is important that you bring them a written complaint, not just a verbal discussion.
  8. France banned most UK travelers effective midnight Saturday. https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20211216-france-bans-most-uk-travel-as-omicron-fears-mount Starting at midnight on Saturday, travellers will need "an essential reason to travel to, or come from, the UK, both for the unvaccinated and vaccinated... People cannot travel for touristic or professional reasons", the French government said in a statement.
  9. My neighbors would have a blast with them during the San Andres fiesta and on New Year's Eve.
  10. If your 1st shot doesn't kill him, why do you think he won't seek retribution while you attempt to reload?? Or that his partner(s) since they usually work in groups of 2 or 3, won't give you a dose of your own medicine? Thankfully this Big Talk about David slaying Goliath and guns or quasi-guns are nothing more than Clint Eastwood wet dreams by a bunch of old tired retirees. Most of you will sleep through any robberies with your CPAP machine humming beside you.
  11. You can't search by gender, but the very 1st page of the Jalisco Directorio de Notario Colegio has 1 (out of 10 on the page) based on name (Cecilia).
  12. In late 2012 we consulted with a Notario prior to listing our first Ajijic house for sale and he said we wouldn't owe the capital gains tax based on what we told him. Prior to settlement he asked for the TelMex and CFE bills to support our eligibility. Notarios are personally on the hook for the capital gains tax if upon review of the paperwork (by Hacienda, I believe) that s/he should not have exempted a seller from it.
  13. https://www.vallartadaily.com/american-tourist-in-puerto-vallarta-stuck-in-hospital-for-non-payment/ AMERICAN TOURIST IN PUERTO VALLARTA STUCK IN HOSPITAL FOR NON-PAYMENT DECEMBER 14, 2021 i VALLARTA DAILY NEWS m PUERTO VALLARTA NEWS, SPOTLIGHT   Another tourist is facing the reality in Mexico that hospital bills must be paid in full before being discharged or face criminal charges. What was supposed to be a dream vacation turned into a nightmare for a couple from Oregon. David and Christina Deloyola planned for months for their pre-Christmas vacation to Puerta Vallarta, Mexico. “We saved up all year for our dream vacation to come here for a week,” said Christina, David’s wife of 21 years. On their last day of vacation, the couple went horseback riding. But not long into their excursion, the horse David Deloyola was riding bucked him off, then fell on top of him. David Deloyola was rushed to a local hospital, where he underwent imaging and tests to determine the extent of his injuries. “He’s immobilized right now. He can’t move at all,” said Christina Deloyola. David luckily wasn’t paralyzed and didn’t break any bones, but the incident left him with multiple tears in his thigh. The Deloyola’s now have to come up with the money for first-class, non-stop flights with medical supervision to get them back to Oregon, where David Deloyola will likely undergo surgery. On top of that, they will have to pay for their hospital bills in full before they’re discharged. Their insurance will not cover any of the costs upfront but will likely reimburse them at some point in the future. That means the couple has to find a way to pay for the thousands of dollars in medical bills, on top of the $4,500 they’ve already spent   “They demand payment in full before they release him. They will actually get the police involved and won’t let you leave the hospital unless your bill is paid completely,” said Christina Deloyola. According to AAA Oregon, this is something all travelers should be aware of, especially when traveling abroad. “Unfortunately, this is something that a lot of travelers don’t think about. Your health insurance will often not cover an injury or an illness if it occurs outside the U.S.” said Marie Dodds with AAA. Some health insurance companies will reimburse you once you’ve returned from your trip and provide receipts of your medical bills. But not all companies will reimburse you. That’s why, Dodds said, it’s critical to check with your medical insurance coverage before you travel, and get travel insurance with a medical policy. The Deloyola’s had travel insurance, but no supplemental medical coverage. The couple is trying to stay positive while they figure out how to come up with the money to pay their hospital bills and get home to their three daughters in Oregon. “There’s no one I’d rather be stuck in Mexico with than my husband,” said Christina.
  14. Have read about this on local FB pages. They way it works is that the expat is offered the sticker, knowing his/her car never goes to Guadalajara. The person they buy it from slaps the sticker on the car, often in the expat's garage. The expat KNOWS it's not right, but wants to save the hassle of going to GDL.
  15. Q remains, what will Notarios accept? Even if I store on pc or in cloud, are they still going to want them printed out? If so, I'd rather print monthly now than print 5+ years worth of bills in one fell swoop!
  16. TelCel bills to my knowledge were never used nor requested by Notarios for proof of residence re: capital gains. I would like to hear from realtors about what is required these days by Notarios. In 2012 we had to provide hard copies of both CFE and TelMex. I keep CFE bills and print out of the payment page of my TelMex, but as @Ferret asks, do we still need to do so in this day and age where data can be verified at CFE and TelMex sites? Also curious about names on bills---at our former house the CFE bill was in joint names. When we bought this house in 2017 CFE told us we could only have ONE person's name on the account. To cover ourselves, we put TelMex account in the other spouse's name. But what if we cancel TelMex...is there an issue for 2nd spouse's proof of residence at the time of house sale??
  17. Why do you think they would do that, and not just think that you're a cheap-@ss gringo?
  18. We don't have anything in our home worth a physical confrontation with a man (or more likely men) 40 years younger than us. Past instances of home invasion (very very rare here, can't even remember last one) have involved more than one robber; how many of us are still able to fend off multiple persons at one time?? It's never a good idea to start a fight you aren't sure you can win. You don't know if they're armed with knives, guns or their own tasers, or how many there are in your house. So you spray/tase/ or otherwise momentarily slow down Guy #1....you think Guy #2 is gonna like that?? Even if it's just one guy---you spray him with wasp spray or stun him for a few minutes--think the Chapala Police will arrive in 2 minutes?? What do you do when he comes to on your floor; he's going to be in a really bad mood! Are you prepared to beat someone to death while you wait on the Police to arrive (keep in mind the Ajijic sub-station closes at 7PM). Once they are in your home, let them have whatever they want. Frankly most burglaries here are committed in daytimes, mostly petty crimes of opportunity when they know the house is empty. Best advice is to secure access to break-ins.
  19. Realize you specified Guadalajara, but fyi there is a spa store Hydropool in Interlago Plaza here. Purchased from them several years ago.
  20. Cocinart is open, not doing a set prix fix menu. Instead a choice of 5 entrees ala carte (170 to 200) El Charro is offering choice of Prime Rib (1000) or stuffed turkey (600). Dharma has set menu with a cocktail, main is stuffed pork tenderloin (790) Oui Oui, not sure menu, includes a drink (599)
  21. Thanks again to Rolly Brook, may he rest in peace. You pay the Aguinaldo by Dec. 20th. Vacation Pay is due by End Of Year if you have not paid earlier. Aguinaldo (Christmas Bonus) The aguinaldo must be paid on or before the 20th of December. The aguinaldo must be paid in cash; gifts, Christmas baskets, and other presents do not fulfill the requirement. The aguinaldo must equal 15 days of salary. To calculate the amount for a part-time employee, divide the number of days worked during the year past by 365. Multiply that figure by 15 x the daily salary to determine the amount of the aguinaldo. Examples: If you have an employee who works one day a week for $50 pesos: 52/365 x 15 x 50 = $106.85 pesos If the worker is paid by the week and has worked a full year, use a multiplier of 2.14 to make the math easier. If the worker is paid $500 pesos per week, then it is $500 x 2 .14 = $1070 pesos If the weekly worker has not worked a full year, divide the number of weeks worked by 52.14 x 15 x the daily salary (weekly salary divided by 7) to determine the amount of the aguinaldo. Vacación (Vacation) The vacación must be paid in cash, either before the vacation or before the end of the year if no vacation has been taken. The vacación pay must equal required number of vacation days of salary plus and additional 25% of the amount. To calculate the amount, divide the number of days worked during the year past by 365. Multiply that figure by number of vacation days times 1.25 to determine the amount of the vacación pay due. Examples: If you have an employee for one year who works one day a week for $50 pesos: 52/365 x 6 x 1.25 x 50 = $53.42 pesos = vacación If the worker is paid $500 pesos per week, convert the weekly rate to a daily rate by dividing by 7. 500/7 x 6 x 1.25 = $535 pesos = vacación Note: The 6-day minimum vacation is only for the first year worked. The basis increases by 2 days each year through the 4th year. The 5th year it increases 2 days to 14 days. Thereafter, the time increases by 2 days each 5th year. For example: A maid has worked for 5 years, so she is due 14 days vacation. She works 3 days per week for $760 per week. which is $253.33 per day. 3 x 52 = 156 days worked per year. 156/365 x 14 x 1.25 x 253.33 = $2642.71 If we ignore that she works only 3 days and consider her a weekly employee, then 760/7 x 14 x 1.25 = $1900 Year 1 -- 6 days Year 2 -- 6 + 2 = 8 days Year 3 -- 8 + 2 = 10 days Year 4 -- 10 + 2 = 12 days Year 5 -- 12 + 2 = 14 days Year 10 -- 14 + 2 = 16 days Year 15 -- 16 + 2 = 18 days etc
  22. We pay via PayPal. fyi, there is no office...we did everything via WhatsApp (had to send pics of RP and CFE bill). Install was very quick, but we made it easy....used path of least resistance. They also have an app if you want to use it.
