The Day of the Dead (actually two days) is rich in tradition and activity. For the visitor to Mexico, it is wondrous and mysterious. Come and learn about the significance of the Altar and how to build your own. Embrace the Catrina. Altar: Either built-in home or around the tombstones, Mexicans entice their passed away loved ones to come back for a visit, so both worlds the living and the dead can enjoy a great celebration together. Let´s learn where this tradition comes from, how they build it, and the meaning it holds. La Catrina: The Grande Dame of the Dead represents what death means to Mexicans and how they face it. It was initially named “La Calavera Garbancera” describing a person who was ashamed of his indigenous origins and dressed as a European person who wanted to have whiter skin. In time, this lady became an iconic image in Mexico´s culture of the Death celebration in the country. Calavera Literaria: These popular poems mock death and our best friends and worst enemies. After all, as the writer, Guadalupe Posada said, “death is democratic,” so let’s not leave anybody out! We’d like to invite everybody to join, learn and have fun. Be part of the tradition, embrace and experience what many Mexicans do at home, schools, offices, venues, etc. We will make teams and each team will build their altars at LCS to honor those who departed but remain in our memories and hearts. We’ll start building altars on Nov 01 in the morning. If you want to join a team, please send an email to DirectorEducation@LakeChapalaSociety.com BEFORE Oct 26.

Date: October 15 Cost: Free admission The LCS Garden Art shows are back for this coming high-season (October through March)! Our first show of the season will be held in the gardens of the Lake Chapala Society on Saturday, October 15 from 10am to 3pm (16 de septiembre #16A in Ajijic). The theme of this month's show will be “Day of the Dead.” Admission is free, and you'll find ample parking on the lake front. The profit from the participation fee paid by the artists benefits our community outreach programs. The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) has been hosting high-season art shows in its renowned gardens since 2017. As part of LCS's commitment to local community support, these shows feature only artists from the Chapala and Ajijic area. Rather than being restricted to members of specific art groups, they showcase art from all artists, and provide a much-needed sales venue for local Mexican artisans and artists who do not normally have access to such opportunities. In addition, these shows provide a sales platform for the LCS Children’s Art Program to sell original art plus their famous art cards featuring the kid's artwork – an important revenue source for the youngsters and their families, as well as being a learning opportunity about the “business of art.” Come on out and support local art, handicrafts, and the children's art while enjoying a pleasant day in our gardens. You can take a break in our café for a cold drink, a snack, or a meal. Don't miss it!
