  1. Argentina is one of the greatest eaters of beef per capita in the world. The government subsidizes the cost of beef to the public and with the current world prices they are trying to cut back on exports and preserve the meat for public consumption. A long dry period greatly reduced the number of cows in Argentina.
  2. A filet mignon is the tip of the tenderloin. Sounds like the restaurant had some tenderloin cut up for shish kebobs and served daisy with them masquraded as a filet mignon.
  3. We use to call them June Bugs since this is when they appeared. I use to set buckets around a light pole and feed them to my chickens. It was fun to watch the chickens fight over them. I would throw one in the pen and a chicken would grab it and run with the other chickens chasing it.
  4. I think most butcher shops have it. I have been buying it at the butcher shop on the corner East of the Ajijic plaza. They had it in a big can and I bought a kilo at a time.
  5. We swore off samsung phones after my wife's exploded and burned large hole in hotel carpet. We were lucky she had placed it on a table prior to explosion. This was 3 years ago.
  6. Due to the additive problem. There is now a big market in the USA for meat from cattle which have been grass fed only. Angus beef which has been grazed on good grass is tender and has a great flavor. Packaging in US indicates if it is grass fed beef.
  7. Don't know about feed lot's for sure but I believe they have changed their practices. Here in Oklahoma as of about 3 years ago, I can no longer buy medicated feed and if I have a sick animal, I must get veterinary help for animal or get a prescription from a vet in order to buy an antibiotic vaccine. This means almost no animals going to feed lots will have antibiotics in them. Use to when calves were weaned many people fed them a medicated feed to keep them from getting colds, etc.
  8. I think it depends on where you live. We live in Riberas and a little over a year ago we got telmex. We ordered a higher speed than 10 but a woman working in the office told us she lived in Riberas and she could never get above a 10. When our installer came he set us up for 10. He said the higher speed had constant problems.

    Quail

Does anyone know restaurant with Quail on the menu. I prefer fried but would settle for baked. gracias
  10. now I stick to Sonora or the back of a pickup truck delivery at the meercado, for a fresh beef tenderloin. This board is ,as clearly stated, about the lake Chapala,Guadalajara and Mexico in general. So since the OP by rafterbr and subsequent post be geeser effect none of us one iota can you two not find another board to moan and groan about US,Aussie beef producing, where your like minded persons could give a hoot about. I belong to a BSA a7-a10 group and we don't discuss Triumphs. You are sadly mistaken if you think the price of beef lakeside will not be effected by the prices in Australia and up North. We live in a world economy now and with the current world prices I expect Mexico will start exporting more beef with prices in Mexico rising accordingly. If you read my article it was intended as an advisory that people lakeside may want to stock up on beef before prices rise.
  11. When I retired from government 25 years ago I started ranching and was getting 50 cents a pound for calves. Four or 5 years ago I got $1,500 a calf and I thought happy times are here. Last year I got around $650 a calf and not making much money after expenses. My expenses are the same whether $1,500 calf or $650 calf. Prices have started to go back up and maybe I will make some money this year. I understand in Australia calves are bringing over $1,000 a calf, straight off the cow which is how I sell them.
  12. My aljibe has a pump. When we first bought casa it did not have a tinaco.

    Beef Prices

Beef prices are starting to really go up and if you eat a lot of beef now is a good time to stock up. Australia use to be the largest exporter of beef in the world. Due to droughts and bush fires their cattle numbers are really down and now their beef prices are the highest in the world. It will be years before they build back up again. With record prices the ranchers cannot afford to keep heifers back to build cattle herds. It takes 3 years from the time a calf is born until she in turn will have a calf. Ranchers who were forced to sale their cows now cannot afford to buy them back. Countries who bought beef from Australia are forced to look for other sources. This will cause a world wide increase in the price of beef. Here in Oklahoma prices have already gone up around 20%. Prices in Mexico will follow the states price lines. The largest exporter of beef in the world is now Brazil with India second. A lot of the India meat is water buffalo. The USA is 3rd and Mexico around 7th and Canada 10th. Argentina use to be large exporter but now they are close to being importer. Meat processors in the USA have been making record profits of around $300 for each beef processed. It will remain to be seen if they will absorb some of these livestock increased prices or not. There are only 3 main processors in the USA and they have a monopoly on the meat industry. Congressional investigation is now underway on them but they make large political donations so its "iffy" if anything will be done.
  14. Do you remember how much they charged? Gracias
  15. Excellent advice from all. Now does someone have name and phone number of someone to clean it. From the aljibe one line goes to outside faucet and T's to go to Tinaco so I believe the garden water doesn't come from Tinaco but I am sure you are right the Tinaco and aljibe need to be cleaned.
  16. Over a year ago, we put a new tinaco on the roof of our casa. We returned to the states planning to come back to Mexico in 6 months. Covid prevented this but we are now vaccinated and ready for return. My concern is the water in the tinaco is now over a year old. We have a gardener and he has been watering the garden but I am sure this water comes directly from the aljibe. I wonder if the water in Riberas is treated in any way, if not I am afraid the water in the tinaco will be full of algae and other pollutants. Any suggestions?
  17. You are taking a risk anytime you eat a raw hamburger. In Oklahoma, health department rules preclude a restaurant from serving a raw hamburger. I never did but many restaurants still do. Every year in the states there are massive recalls of hamburger meat because a company's mincer/grinder got infected with e-coli. The meat from a company is usually shipped over a several state area so you are in danger no matter where you are. A lot of the grocery stores grind their own beef but they buy the meat by the box and the meat in the box could have been contaminated at the packer. With a steak the e-coli is on the outside of the meat and will be cooked even if a raw steak is ordered. With hamburger the meat is ground and now the e-coli is inside the meat and if the meat inside is raw you can get e-coli.
  18. Check with your propane company. Many have a "sniffer" which will find the leak location.
  19. I shudder at the thought. You will not get the flavor a flame fire heat will induce, be it gas, wood, charcoal or even from a pan fry. All the good steak houses I know use a flame kissed preparation of a steak. Charcoal also works well and I used charcoal with a kiss of flame at the end when I had my steak house.
  20. If you have an iron skillet a pan fried steak is hard to beat! I think it is a lot better than an electric grill.
  21. Thanks, Excellent food and nice patio, They will be number 1 with me.
  22. Cocinart one of my favorites but Unless it has changed does not have outside dining.
  23. I agree with you, about decided not to shoot anymore but the meat is really good!
  24. Since they were a Spanish posession for many years, this is not surprising.
  25. You almost won the lottery! Prime Rib is goose, Flying rib eye is Sand Crane which is rated the best water fowl eating there is. Hunters spend thousands of dollars in search of them. In the panhandle of Oklahoma is a resting place for them on their way to Mexico. You are allowed a 3 bag limit each day and a $3 federal stamp is required. They eat anything but especially like grains and the wheat fields of the panhandle is made to order for them. There are hunting lodges for them at Zacatecas, Mexico. Fortunately I have a rancher friend in the Panhandle who allows me to hunt on his wheat farm. Does not taste like duck or goose at all more like a pheasant cross with pork. Hard to describe but delicious. Kind of depends on how it is cooked.
