  1. We were out shopping yesterday and stopped at the flower nursery on the west end of Riberas on the mountain side.  My wife bought 4 bags of soil to be delivered.  We continued shopping and ate lunch at the Mexican cafe near where Food Container use to be (only open Sat-Sun) and continued walking home.  My wife discovered her purse was missing and went back to the nursery to see if they had found it.  The woman running the nursery said they had not seen it but later the woman's daughter said her little girl had found it but the money was missing, around 1,500 pesos but they were sure we would like to have the documents back.  Which we were since it contained her Mexican I.D. and Mexican bank card.  I gave the girl a 400 peso reward.  Later when they delivered the dirt they brought 5 bags instead of  the 4 we had ordered.

  2. After not being able to eat at Food Container we tried the new restaurant by the new car wash in Riberas.  It is called Lousiana and has a very limited menu of hamburgers and seafood.  We had the special which was crab with shrimp and mussels, ears of corn and potatoes.  It is all cooked together Lousiana style.   A large metal plate is placed on table and covered with paper and than the cooked smorgasbord is dumped on the paper like in Lousiana.  You eat with your hands and a small bucket is provided to dump your cobs, peelings, etc in.  It cost 650 pesos and wasn't bad.  Will try again when my son-in-law visits in January. I've ate this way in Lousiana but it was with crawdads.

  3. Went to eat at Food Container last night and found it has been converted to a bar.  When we arrived very loud music was playing and we asked if they were serving food.  We were told we could get snacks with our drinks.  We left to find somewhere else to eat.  Not my favorite place but will miss having this extra place to eat.

  4. When we first came here nine years ago we rented a house in La Floresta which we really enjoyed.  However 7 years ago we bought a casa in Riberas because it was much cheaper.  Now with all the new businesses like Hola Market we are really pleased we bought here.  We can virtually get anything we want within walking distance. Other great news a realtor recently appraised our place at double what we paid for it.

  5. It sounds like you have one of three possible reasons your VW doesn't start.  First is your battery is low, even though lights come on there may not be enough  "juice" left in your battery to turn over your starter.  If you have neighbor who can give you  a jump this will answer this question.  Second is your starter solenoid switch may be bad, a relative easy, cheap fix.  Third is the starter itself, you can usually start the car a time or two if you knew where on the starter to give it a hit with a hammer. New starter will be your most costly fix.

  6. I usually give the driver 10 pesos and sometimes they give 2 pesos back, depending on the driver.  The nicer autobus that goes direct to Guadalajara turns at the Walmart/Mall intersection and does not go into Chapala.  So you would have to walk a little ways with it.  The auto bus can be very crowded depending on time of day you travel.  Middle of day is usually good.  I don't mind riding the autobus and do so frequently.  My wife prefers we take a taxi.  We have a regular taxi we use and we call about an hour in advance of the time we want him to pick us up.

  8. Birria is not birria with out cabrito and Jocotepec has the best Lakeside.  It is one of my favorite lakeside dishes and we go to Jocotepec to ebjoy it.  My favorite is on East side of Plaza but both other mentioned places are good.  Guadalajara is famous for this dish but it is hard to beat what Jocotepec has to offer.  Cabrito (young roasted goat)

  9. We quit eating at the original Pancho's because of the terrible food we got.  One time my wife ordered a chef salad.  She got one leaf of lettuce with a few things on top.  Last time we ever ate there.  If original Pancho's is so bad why should new one be any better.  I remember one time Pancho's received so many complaints on food that he himself came on this site to defend the food.  He received so many complaints afterwards, he never did this again.

  10. We bought a house in Riberas and completely furnished it Lakeside.  We bought new washer, dryer, dish washer, refrigerator and stove.  New sofa and mattress, table and chairs.  The rest of the things came from bazaar's and there is always someone returning to the states and selling there household goods.   Bring small things that will fit in your car but virtually everything you will need is here.  Prices are reasonable and most stores deliver, sometimes with a small charge.  We still have house in the states so kept the household goods but you can probably sell your furniture there and replace here for about the same price.

  11. Everyone brags on the ribs but being from the south, I didn't really like them.  I didn't find any good ribs Lakeside.  The sauce used has a lot to do with it and I prefer a southern one.  Rib's should be slow cooked many hours with several bastings.  The sauces are family secrets but usually brown sugar based. Best rib places use two kinds of wood while being smoked.  A hard wood like oak or hickory and a fruit wood like cherry, apple, etc'  This means barbequer must have two wood ovens on it for heat and smoke.  Places like this are few and far between but good ones have more business than they can handle.  Last one I went to had a 30 minute wait outside to get inside just to wait some more.

  12. In Riberas after 6 at night, monday to friday there is a woman who sell's tamales in front of the Oxxo by the Pemex station.  They are some of the best tamales I've found lakeside.  She has pork, chicken and corn.  Corn is my favorite.  She sells out of a large ice chest to keep them warm.  Several of her children are usually with her.  I've tried the traveling truck ones and hers are way better.  If you need many, I am sure you can place an order with her.
