  1. Food Container is now closed and it appears Adelitas may soon follow.  Never much cared for Adelitas as I was disappointed with the ribs everyone else raved over.  (of course what do Canadians, know about ribs?)  Much preferred Mario's when we were in the area.   I was not aware of the history of Adelitas so thank you Carnivore.  Restaurants must have an active hands on knowledgeable management to be successful and it is evident this is now lacking at Adelitas.  As Ferret said there are a lot of good restaurants lakeside.

My wife and I went to Casa TreeSkel (at  Carretera poniente 998, Ajijic, Mexico, phone # 33 3488 4136, on the lakeside a little west of the recycling center) recently and had a selection of tapas along with a cheeseboard and a bottle of wine.  The service and quality of the food were both topnotch and there were no mosquitos this time of the year.  We've added it to our list of favorite restaurants.

Thanks for an excellent post.  I hope others will follow your example!

  3. Several years back my wife returned from a trip to Germany and looked at our Mexican bank account.  She said where is all the money.  We got a copy of our bank statement and found every week two or three charges were being paid to a company in the USA.  We protested the charges but the bank said it was charges I had made.  The bank has a fraud unit in Mexico City and we appealed to them.  They found the company in the USA was known for fraudulent charges and we got our money back.  The main thing that saved us was we had paid for fraud insurance on our account.  We are just lucky a bank officer in Mexico City had talked us into purchasing the fraud insurance.  Bank was Santander. I believe the credit card information was stolen by an appliance store here lakeside.

Curious   What places in Mexico (other than federal government offices) have you not been able to use a foreign Visa or Mastercard?

Don't know about now but at one time Walmart did not accept foreign credit cards, you had to go to the ATM,  also store where I bought an appliance.  I should have added clarity,  many restaurants and stores do not accept any credit card.  About half of the restaurants I go to want cash only.

  5. When I go to the states I always take pesos with me for when I come back.  A new traveler, I think either the ATM or exchange window would be fine.  You definitely want some pesos with you.  Almost all the ATM's have an English option if you don't know Espanol and the exchange windows charge a high rate but your only talking about $100 or so you would exchange. Get additional monies at one of the exchange places in Chapala or Ajijic.  A lot of the places here don't accept USA, Canadian or foreign credit cards.

15% discount if paid in January or February. 5% discount if paid in March or April. If you have an INE card and are a senior, there is a 50% discount. Inapam cards do not get you that discount.

Thank you for your info.  We will be in Mexico City so was wondering.  Wife has INE card and is senior.  I think she received this discount last year.  Your help is much appreciated.

Curious, how was the Covid Long diagnosis made?  Feel free to PM me, no need to re-route this thread South to Argentina.

After flying from USA at Christmas I got sick,  January I went to Dr. and he send me for complete Lab work.  It was found I had 2 covid's at the same time.  Tested 2 weeks later and still had.  Really sweating it but March when I needed to go back to the states I tested OK but not sure how good this test was.

  8. I appreciate reviews on restaurants both good and bad. The more details the better, and I think it is stupid I would have to pm someone to get the name of the restaurant.  I have owned several restaurants and if I put out bad food, I deserved to be called out on it.  If the pizza was bad from Adelitas doesn't mean all their food is bad but this is a heads up to be leery of the pizza which they are not known for.

  9. They don't have a tourist visa anymore.  They simply stamp your passport.  As for customs, everyone after getting stamped in country,  fills out customs declaration for family and goes thru the same line (Mexican and foreigners) and hopefully gets a green light when you push the button.

  10. Schools teach young people nothing about the real world.  I had several restaurants.  Out of perhaps 40 applicants from young people over the years, I only had 1 who could count money back.  Others had to totally rely on the register.  The one had both parents who were Mexican but she knew no Spanish.

  11. Confusion at Hola Market today.  The check out clerks seem to all be in training.  Every time  I go they seem to have problems at register. Today I bought $185 pesos worth of goods, I gave them a $200 peso note.  One took it to the back and brought two one hundred peso bills back. The young man on the register said give me 15 pesos and he gave me $100 pesos.  I said give me my 15 pesos back and give me another 15 pesos and I gave the $100 pesos back.  They seemed confused and I took the receipt and pointed to the bottom line which was correct.  I think they were still confused when I left.

For example, I recently purchased a bag of Kirkland dog food that had a sticker price on the bag as $923.  My receipt for the purchase showed $795.69 and at the bottom of the receipt was added IVA 16% of $127.31.  If you do the math, $795.69 + $127.31 = $923.00.  Still a lot less expensive than the same bag at other stores in the area.

You are correct most of what I bought was not food items so there was a high IVA.  I checked and IVA was only charged on non-food items.  I did not know they could charge IVA for non-food items.  For now on I will figure this in my calculations.  I don't remember paying IVA at other stores when I buy something.  I will check my receipts. Thank you for the heads up.

That would be in violation of the law. Their posted prices should have the IVA included. Are you sure the register ticket wasn't just itemizing the IVA that was included in the prices?

I need to learn how to add photo's here.  My receipt clearly shows price for each item same as the prices they show.  There is a total  for this and next on the receipt is listed IVA 16% and this amount is added  to previous total. So I definitely paid more than their listed prices.
