  1. The open mikes are in Chapala Thursdays at 5 at El Patio restaurant on Madero (main street) and in  Ajijic at La Bodega restaurant  5:00 - 7:30 on Wednesdays.  Mostly English language singers.   Same backup band at both.  Pretty good, veteran players from the States.  Otherwise, some oldies English language bands playing around.  And a lot of Spanish language bands playing in the area.  Then, of course, there`s Guad.....

There`s a huge piano store in Guad but I don`t know the name.  Tim Welch would know.  He`s the choir director at St. Andrews Anglican church in Riberas. He`s the most knowledgeable, most accomplished/professional  musician here.  Directs several choirs here and in Guad and is a highly desired voice teacher.  Accompanist par excellence.

  2. I did it by simply emailing the Guad office:

    FBU Guadalajara <fbu.guadalajara@ssa.gov>

Give them your email address, date of birth, soc. sec. number.  That`s all it took for them to sign me up for Social Security.  They will ask other things like the bank routing number, etc. later.  They may ask you to come in or want to call you.  But you can try the simple way first.

  3. There is a fabric store in Santa Teresita that is all cotton.  Yes, every fabric in the store (small) is 100% cotton. Beautiful little store. Muchas mantas y mucho mas.

Comercializadora Textil (sign is very hard to see), Joaquin Angula No. 1460.  Tel: 333-826-2302.  Couple of blocks from Centro Mercantil Villanueva.

    I was there today.

Also, Centro Mercantil  Villanueva has reorganized the store and most of the natural fabrics are now on the first floor, but not all.

Also, Textiles Capilla has almost nothing but acrylic knits as of yesterday.  Besides the ever-present dark blue thin denim.  Otherwise, I don`t there was a single cotton fabric.  The linens have dwindled to a few.  No thick plastic fabric.  No rayons.

Anybody have a source for Amate/Bark paper panels?

If you mean amate paper, it can be had at the large Lumen store just west of the cathedral in Guadalajara.  If you mean the painted amate paper artesania (birds, village scenes, etc.) , there is several tiendas in Ajijic that sell them.  If you mean the formed bas relief works, go to San Pablito.  There was a man who made these in the Ajijic plaza but he has been gone for a couple of years.  There was a man in the last Feria who made and sold these, he may be back this year.

    Hello:

BDmowers was a little off on the Chapala open mics. yes the El Patio is on Thursday but my Open Mic which is more in a coffeehouse setting is on Friday at Historica Buenos Ayres Cafe, corner of Morelos and Zaragoza a few blocks before American Legion, same side of street. This Friday, we have open mic from 6-7pm and a special show from 7-8 where James Martin and I are playing country songs in the round. You should come and check us out. it would be great to have a fiddle player around.  also you can go on the following sites to see what's up in the entertainment listings.

    Facebook: Lakeside Open Mics

Lakeside and Ajijic Entertainment, a great listing by Sharon Stavrof(SP?)

Teresa Trigiani-vocalist/guitarist/hostess of open mic/student of jazz

What`s "country songs in the round"?

This campaign against plastic bags is getting a little disproportionate when you consider that they make up only .8% of the plastics now in use. Even if we eliminate them all, it will have an insignificant impact on the problem.

Ah, statistics!  Your figure of .8% is for plastics now in use.   I might submit that a statistic for percentage of plastic bags that make their way into the oceans where they enter fish and animal digestive systems and do other harm might be significant.

Here are a couple of statistics regarding this:

On the Ocean Conservancy International Coastal Cleanup day in September 2017, 789,138 volunteers in more than 100 countries collected about 20.5 million pounds of trash. 7% of this were plastic bags.

The American Chemical Society says that 6.5% of plastics in the oceans are plastic bags.

  7. I`m looking for color remover for clothes.  Some of the Mexican marcas would be El Caballito Decolorante or Mariposa Decolorante.  US RIT Color Remover. Perhaps there are other brands that do the same thing.  Soriana, who had it for years, has discontinued it.  La Parasina in Chapala does not have it. I have tried all the ferreterias who carry Mariposa colorantes.  Has anyone seen this exact product, the decolorante, not the colorantes?  Gracias.

  8. It`s most likely the larvae of some flying insect.  In the US there were "moths". It wasn`t the moths (no mouth parts) eating clothes, it was their larvae.  To eradicate larvae on clothes I would dry clean all the clothes of that fiber or even all natural fiber clothes near your blouse.

Can anyone tell me when the loud cohetes will stop? We can put up with them but our dogs are terrified. We have had to get medication to calm them down!

I know there is some kind of festival in San Antonio Tlayacapan but was wondering when we could expect a good nights sleep.

As was said, they don`t stop.  All newbies ask your question.  After a while, you stop asking.  BTW, fiestas and cohetes are not always related.  There are cohetes during fiestas (not just the once a year patronales like in SA now but all through the year) but also for birthdays and other parties and when a couple of guys want to just pull over to the side of the road, drink and set off cohetes.  All these I have personally experienced.  My construction earphones saved my sanity the first few years here but I don`t wear them any longer and the cohetes now are just a part of my aural life (with the loud musica on weekends, barking dogs, speakers announcing fruit and vegetables, water, gas, et. al.).  Cohetes are Mexico. Mexico is cohetes. You`ll adjust and hopefully you`ll be able to help your dogs adjust as well.  For now, for you, you might want to invest in good earplugs and construction earphones.

Yes, thanks. I've already bought worms from both. Juan Diego is a good friend. Neither of them have large quantities available. I'm presently trying to boost my population.

Good luck on your worm and mulch venture.

Have you contacted the worm people in Guad and environs (they`re on the internet under "lombriz roja californiana")? One is "Lombricultura Guadalajara" in Zapopan.

Also, reportedly and confirmed by the woman in the plaza tienda in Tlachichilco, there is a worm farm a kilometer or so outside of Tlachichilco on 16th de Septiembre (the main road in Tlachichilco).  The road becomes nearly impassable a half a klick out except to 4-wheel drives.   Haven`t made it past the rough spot yet in our van.

    GPS: 20.335515, -103.078470

  11. Now we`re cooking!   So many possibilities for new products in the new no-plastic-bag world! Love the shipping suit!

timjwilson, composting worms can be had at the Tuesday market from Anna Luz (don`t remember her company name) and Juan Diego at Galo Goat Farm.  I think a well-labeled vermicomposting bucket on the malecon is doable!  Just tell the malecon gardeners what you`re doing.
