  1. HAPPY to report (for those like me who don't use FB) that ALL of Mauricio's dogs are adopted or else in shelters. This was achieved by a caring of a group of foreigners who knew and loved him, and resolved that NONE of his animals would be put down. The cat is at a local vet office to be spayed and then her future to be determined also.

Mods:  This might be more appropriate in Furry Friends but int his case, hope you will agree is more likely to be viewed by more on this page.  Gracias.

Artsnob is there a way we can see that news cast.  Do you remember the name of the news station?  Perhaps it will be on u tube.

Channel 4 Guadalajara (telecable or Izzi as it's now called)  in Spanish.  Informador newspaper (Guad) also on line  in Spanish.  POSSIBLY something by now on Milenio Noticias (52 on telecable) from Mexico City in Spanish.

    Doubt YouTube.... maybe Facebook?

  3. This is not just a local horror..... it's showing up in various parts of Mexico.  TV news this a.m. said 113 deaths...... 50 in Puebla alone..... as of yesterday. And those are only the ones they know of.  Informador on line today has report of a group of people in state of Morelos who knew where one guy was storing / selling the tainted stuff took matters into their own hands and burned the house down.  Too bad the guy wasn't in it at the theme.

I have lived on and off in Mexico for 33 years. For many years I was a Resident of Canada then I became a non Resident, then back to Resident of Canada for medical reasons. I think the Mexican medical system is better than the Canadian one in many ways so I am thinking about becoming a non Resident again. How have others dealt with this status? I know some have lived here for years and kept their Resident in Canada status and their medical intact.

There are forms you need to complete and requirements you need to meet to be able to declare non-residency. We did it 20 years ago so not up to date on that. But I CAN tell you that unless you spend 180 days a year in Canada you are breaking the law trying to keep medical intact.

Two friends --- BC and Ontario --- both got "caught" via passport entry info shared with medical system.  One had to pay back benefits received. (Deceased now and can't remember if was before or after "permanente" system)  Other (permanente) is now being chased by provincial medical system involved via collection agency, and the next step could be worse (and for that reason is not leaving Mexico any time soon!)

I have found that the Mexican brown sugars work just fine.

It does for many things..... but just like white azucar estandar  it would NOT work for baking recipes that require creaming the butter and sugar together (eg many cookies and cakes etc) because in both cases the individual grains are too large and do not combine into the light, fluffy mix required in those cases. I learned this the hard way years ago trying white estandar , and had to resort to the more expensive, "whiter",  and finer grained azucar refinada.

Thankfully have allowed myself permission to retire from baking 🤣 so have never had to worry about that since!

Remember that Guadalajara has a very different climate than our micro climate around the lake. The eastern side of the lake has a different micro climate than the west side of the lake The Conagua forecasts are for Guadalajara. All the US weather websites extrapolate the Chapala forecast from the Guadalajara airport forecast.  Very often it is pouring in Ciudad Guzman (south of the lake), and in Guadalajara (north of the lake) and we are under blue skies. The GDL TV weather people  just repeat the Conagua forecasts. They, unlike up north, are not meteorologists.

Excuse my right to disagree.... and of course I know things can be different from as little distance as Riberas to Mirasol or less.  But 20+ years of Guad Chanel 4 news in a.m. (and sometimes more often) with good meteorologists (except for morning gal) with satellite maps and forecasts, what that news says is close enough for us!  Saturday a.m.'s Joe Gonzalez goes into detail with all the satellite towns ---- Chapala, Mazamitla, etc. -- and even gives the height of the waves on the west coast (PV etc).

FYI this morning the bottom line streamer said "experts say the recent rains are NOT connected to the rainy season".

It amazes me that we have these same exact 'conversations' every single year at this time.  I have been here 14 years and except for a couple of years, we have always gotten these 'teasers' at this time of year.  Are we all so old that our memories are failing us! 😅👵👴

Exactly.  20 plus years here and feel the same.

  8. If you can catch her, take her immediately to a veterinarian and have her spayed.  Yes.... they can and do spay when PG.  At least that way that litter plus many more (hers and her female kittens) will not contribute to overpopulation.  Give her a couple of day to rest and recover, and then let her go.

Feed her IF you don't mind her hanging around. Post her   photo on this and other boards.... maybe someone will adopt her?  Otherwise, sad to say but she will manage as she has done in the past.

It is raining again in Ajijic, looks like it is going to be all day and night according to weather forecasters So maybe the rainy season is starting early I hope...

Guad TV news this a.m. said will rain again tonight (Thursday) and then go back to "normal".  Forecast for Colima City today was 35C and blazing sun.  So enjoy it while you can but don't get your hopes up too high just yet.

I have a trip planned for later this year, late September into early Octpber. I’m planning to travel to England & France, from the US. What are we thinking? Should I start thinking of canceling this trip?

I think you should be reading more valid news sites (BBC for example) that go into depth on questions like what will air travel be in the foreseeable future, how  hotels and resorts, tour groups etc.  think they will be handling things IF travel has resumed.  At this point crystal balls will not answer your questions, and all the opinions in the world one way or the other are just that.... hopeful or skeptical opinions.

The answer nobody knows if anything travel-related will have returned to normal by then, nor can they say whether it will safe enough or not.

Are there any checkpoints driving into Guadalajara, and if so are they turning people around?

When I went TO Guad on Monday 10:15 am , there was a checkpoint for those heading towards Chapala at Chapala Haciendas. LONG lineup of cars---- back over the top of the hill.    Yes, they had a state police truck parked at an angle so those being turned away could "retorno" right there and head back up the hill.

When I returned around 12:15 it was still there, but only one car wait. Where did I live? Where had I been? Why? Thankyou.... have a nice day.

The Governor must be unaware of there being no COVID 19 cases Lakeside? The draconian Dr. Fauci must be advising him. They have to stop moving the goal posts as they are killing what’s left of the Mexican economy.

And are YOU aware that this week there was a sudden and totally unexpected outbreak in the IMSS clinic in Ocotlan? Much closer to home than Guad.  Medical personnel as well as normal population involved. Last count I saw was 13 cases, but our power was out all day yesterday so no chance to see latest numbers.

So not get complacent. We could still be next.

    Hi all,

I hope I'm posting in the right place.

I'm a retired expat living in Colombia. I gave it a year in Medellin and realize that Colombia is not the place for me. I'm looking for resources, mainly forums or Facebook groups, that can help shed light on what it's like to live in Lake Chapala. Everything I've read about Lake Chapala is appealing. I want to get the research under my belt so, if interested, I can travel there and make a decision as soon as it's allowed.

    Thanks for any help.

We've been here FAR too long for me to be up to date on Immigration's income requirements, but I think you'd best check that out first because, from comments I've heard lately, I'm not sure that income would qualify you to stay here (unless you have other financial resources).

  14. In February this year Dr. Angel Muelnert (sp?), head of meteorology dept. at U of Guad, predicted 2 - 5º C   (3.5 - 9º F) hotter than normal for March and April.  I think he's been bang on and we have many years here to back that up.

At that time he could not offer any predictions for May and June. Hoping he will have something to say soon.... also HOPING with odd weather things happening in parts of Mexico right now  we might luck out into rains earlier than usual?

  15. Channel 4 Guad news this afternoon had live report from outside Ixtlahuacan where police were checking all vehicles and turning those back with no proof of permanent local residence. This included people with weekend homes here. Also got Presidente of Chapala on the phone for an interview, who stressed malecon, restuarnats and all tourist attractions here CLOSED and go back where you came from like the State Governor has asked you to. Some drivers were mightily ticked off, but they WERE being turned away.

Then they showed same situation happening in Colima.... a measure to keep people from getting to the (closed) beaches.

Informador on line today posted the following Jalisco check points out of Guad:

    • Carretera a Morelia (a la altura de las Plazas Outlet)
    • Autopista a Zapotlanejo (a la altura de la caseta La Joya)
    • Carretera a Chapala (a la altura de Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos)
    • Carretera a Nogales (Venta del Astillero)
    • Carretera Las Palmas- Puerto Vallarta (Km 66)
    • Carretera a Mazamitla (Crucero Tuxcueca)
    • Tapalpa (al ingreso a la población)

I have always bought them at Paz. I have enough for about 20 days. Is there somewhere else that sells them that isn't closed?

You shouldn't be smoking anyway!  Take SunFan's advice and make use of forced "opportunity" to change your ways.
