  1. i live near austin texas and have been crossing at roma texas in the upper rio grande valley for 2 years now. the town on the mexican side is miguel aleman tamps. ive been to many places to cross and this is the easiest. very little traffic going both ways so not much delay. i then drive down highway 54 past the monterrey airport and take the periferico  around monterrey to saltillo then zacatecas and aguascalientes and to the lake. i crossed there last monday with no trouble except i got a green light and they still stopped me and looked at my car. the SAT guy would have liked to have gotten some duty money i guess. from there to lake chapala i was stopped 5 times and they checked my car papers each time. its the first time that ever happened. and at 2 of the stops they asked for tips.so its best to have everything in order for sure.

  2. after reading the post about the CI banco problem, my wife and i went to HSBC. i put in my SCHWAB card and it worked just fine. then my wife put in her SCHWAB card, same machine, it took the card and kept it and no transaction, tried cancelling and that didnt work. so her card was gone, to say she was unhappy is an understatement. came home and called schwab, 3 days later fed ex drives up with the new card.

  3. a hotel in san miguel put one too many zeros on a hotel charge on a usaa credit card, 6500 USD. the hotel caught it and notified my wife but said she would have to dispute it with USAA. the hotel wrote a letter explaining that they were at fault. this was  was disputed and letter sent to usaa. of course they lost all the correspondence and took them 5.5 months to settle in my wifes favor. pathetic service. we use capital one now, far superior company.

  4. i can receive and send  text messages on magic jack, all have been from individuals and not companies i suppose. i have a credit card with capital one but cannot receive a text verification on my cell with a telcel chip and they wont send a verification code to my email, the only downside to that card. i have discussed it many times with them and they mention that they send a short code that i cant receive?? it only happens occasionally so i can live with it to i go back north.

  5. ive bought 2 sets of tires from BUHOS tires, on the left after the last curve going in to joco. so far ive been well satisfied and a good price and sometimes he will give some trade in on the takeoffs. check out his place. his shop is in containers below 3 containers on top where he lives.

  6. i have had several colonoscopies over the years at the VA in austin, same GI doctor. when i had the last one he recommended that i not get the anesthesia. he was right , some pressure but no pain and recovery was much easier. i will not use anesthesia on any more colonoscopy procedures.

  7. i travel from chapala to austin area 4 times per year. i am now crossing both ways at the roma texas,/miguel aleman border crossing, in the upper rio grande valley and i like it a lot better than laredo , colombia or piedras negras.  as i go around monterrey on the periferico headed east i go past the exit for nuevo laredo, a few miles past that exit you come to a toll booth with a big sign says miguel aleman hwy 54. take that exit and go past the monterrey airport on 54 91 miles to cd. mier, there is a small bypass around the town then on to miguel aleman on hwy 2 about 6 miles. its a nice town, follow the signs to the bridge, very little traffic coming both ways. when you get to the US side, turn right on hwy 83 and go 5 miles to garceno then a left on tx 649 to the north, follow it to hwy 16, a right on 16 thru hebbronville and freer etc to san antonio. very little traffic except for right around the monterrey airport and its very busy but it moves along ok and you are soon past that, good road and plenty of gas available. i like staying at the fairfield inn by the airport 1 block off of 54, good prices, convenient and excellent early breakfast and there are several  places to eat within 1 block . there is a lot less stress and truck traffic on this route than the others and i will continue to use it for the forseeable future. i also take hwy 54 thru aguascalientes and zacatecas and right thru the middle of saltillo and on toward monterrey.
