  1. I recently tried to use my US credit card to order items on-line from Amazon (US) and Apple. My intent was to have the items sent to a friend who is visiting in the US and can bring them down to me when he returns. I have been doing this without a problem for more than a decade. For mysterious reasons, none of my transactions went through. I have checked with the bank that issues my card and they said it's fine. I also checked with both Amazon and Apple. Both said the problem was not with them. The refusal messages on their websites advised me to try another payment method. I ultimately persuaded a friend in Ajijic to make the orders on his US card to see if they would go through. To our surprise, they did not. I suspect that Amazon and Apple (and perhaps other companies) are now using algorithms that are able to detect orders coming from Mexico and are automatically declining them. Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone have any idea what is going on and how to solve problem. If my credit card is not usable in Mexico, it will soon be a major problem for me.

  2. A few days ago, I noticed that the rental bulletin board at the LCS is plastered with rentals (both long and short-term) at reasonable rates. ($550-750 for studios and 1 br, etc.) I don't know if the original poster has anyone who can check for him/her and pass on the information, but it might be worth it.

  3. Thanks, everyone, for your quick responses. The page from Conecciones seems to have all the answers I needed. It is very explicit and hopefully should be easy to use. I am very glad it came from the Consulate itself, which means that it is probably as accurate as I can get.

However, anyone who tries to download that page to print it out, as we did, should understand something., Although the page is marked as "15" it is actually pg. 21 because, when a printer (at least mine) counts pages, it will count all the pages, marked or not. Just check to see what page your printer screen says you are on and tell it to print that one. Word to the wise.

  4. My wife needs to renew her passport, which expires this November 2023. We need some information about how to do this. For example:

    1. We plan to mail the applications, rather than use the on-line service, because the official website says the on-line services have been on pause since March and there is no indication when they will be back up again. We have downloaded all the forms but don't know how we can pay the $130 fee. Can we do it by check? If we can pay it by credit card on-line, how is that done?

    2. Where do we send the materials? We have a Laredo mailing address through Handy Mail and the official website says people with addresses in Texas should send their applications to an address there. However, when I called the Guad. Consulate the woman there talked about sending the application packet to the consulate. She also said that we should include in our mailing a "pre-paid" envelope with our Mexican address. "Pre-paid" for how much?  However, the website says they won't send the renewed passport to a Mexican address.  The information the consulate woman was giving me was so contradictory to what the official website says that I don't know who to believe.

We can't believe how difficult and confusing they have made all this. Has anyone submitted their passport for renewal this year? How did you resolved these issues? Are there any lawyers or facilitators here at Lake Chapala that might assist us? Any other advice?

  5. i'm looking for a good hematologist who can be accessed in the Lake Chapala area. One person suggested so far is Dra. Lluvia Sosa, who is based in Guadalajara but visits at Chapala Med. I have a bit of written biography, but I'd appreciate any feedback from someone who has actually seen her and hopefully had a good experience.

Also, any other suggestions of hematologists with whom people have had personal experience. Contact info included please.

  6. Any recommendations for tax preparers of US taxes? We are looking for someone based here at Lakeside with a basic fee that is reasonable. Our current tax person’s basic fee has now jumped to $300 USD. Our taxes are not terribly complex, but still more than we want to deal with on our own. Please include contact info, if possible. Thanks!

  7. We need an old office swivel chair hauled away. Our condo assn. let us know that we can’t dispose of it through the regular trash pick up. What are the alternatives? We see the guys driving around in pickups full of junk, but we don’t know how to contact any of them, other than randomly catching them on the street. Any suggestions?

  8. I have never heard of a "plastic Curp Card". The official paper document containing your CURP number can be downloaded from the internet very simply. All it requires is for you to enter your CURP number and then download the document. However, my plastic Permanente immigration card and plastic Jalisco driver's license both contain my CURP number. That being said, anyone who requires you to produce your CURP will be talking about the paper document.

Here is a good source of information about the CURP: https://immigrationtomexico.mx/what-is-a-curp-number-and-how-to-get-one-in-mexico/  This site contains a link to where you can download the CURP document.

The Dollar Store in Ajijic, and also Walmart, where I bought lavender scented oil last week....

I checked Walmart with no success at all, even after asking several employees. The Dollar Store on the Plaza did have one bottle of Aceite de Citronela, but the container said "exterior". There was nothing else. Still looking.

Superlake has had it from time to time.

If it was me, I  would learn what it is called in Spanish and ask around at some ferreterías.

It is called aceite de lámparas. An oil lamp is also called el candil. I visited three different ferreterias and none carried it. One carried a kerosene lantern and sold kerosene, but I don't want to use that inside my house.
