  1. Dementia care has become more problematic than ever as people are living longer, so higher chance to succumb at some point in their lives. Everyone knows the staggering cost associated with NOB care facilities, with some families forced to send loved ones south for affordable care that eludes them any other way. Sadly, this can mean little or no familial contact from that point on. So I'm thrilled to share this Vancouver Island news story (June 14/22)as an example of what CAN and SHOULD be able to happen almost anywhere. Following a concept created in Europe, B.C. is applying it vigorously. Fingers crossed it becomes the "new normal" in many other places everywhere. And take special note that all but one bed will be publicly funded!! (Yes, that will mean a "means test", but that's been the case in gov't-run care homes in Canada for decades and certainly allowed my low-income aunt to live out her years in comfort and safety.) https://vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca/construction-of-first-dementia-village-on-vancouver-island-begins-1.5946761 Go B.C.!! Go Canada!!

  3. But the daughter won't be able to sell it without her mothers signature on the back of the Factura. Honestly she might want to write her mom's signature if it isn't there in order to avoid long legal process of inheriting the car the car first . ( yes, probably illegal ) but nobody is getting hurt

  7. No you didn't. You said material, which could be anything from metal to plastic to roof tiles to membrane. Why a poster interpreted "material" to mean cloth is weird.

  8. Perhaps the guy is some kind of scammer or perhaps he did make an honest mistake. Sounds to me like both parties are taking an adversarial approach, rather than trying to come to some equitable terms. The homeowner should price out what the materials she used costs at other places, to get an idea of whether he is just trying to scam her, or she really did get much more expensive materials at a ridiculously low price. I couldn't in good conscience take advantage of someone's legitimate error, if that happened to be the case.

  9. My aunt paid $750 in BC (1998-2002) due to her low income. Yes, rates were based on "means test" and this happened all across Canada (and still does) . Wonderful facility. But what's interesting about this new concept is how it's laid out, how people will be in "homes of 12", and a lot more activities including helping in the kitchen if you so desire etc. that MAY lead to decline taking much longer.

  12. I am at a loss as to how many people are coming up with different observations/answers/speculations etc etc from a poster that is passing on info third hand..what a completed waste of time and energies .....some people behave like lemmings and feel compelled to sound off, regardless of the topic and the poster

  13. A couple of Mexican workers are not responsible for this. They would not necessarily have any idea what materials the homeowner ordered nor how much they should cost, nor would they have any idea how much the homeowner paid for them. Your NOB ideas do not apply to how things work in Mexico.

  15. All the years I was in charge of telecom Construction we did private work. And if I messed up I would have had to eat it. It's not the customers job to check materials. It's the contractor job. So how things have always worked with means it's on the contractor. He should have checked himself or had a worker he trusted on site. But I ran a very tight ship and my customers always left happy.

  16. Could you walk me through the process? Can't find one of their flyers now that I need one. Found the web site impossible to navigate. It seems bent on pushing their TV channels on you. All we want is the cheapest fiber optic internet.

  17. What they made ups for 😀. Been thinking about buying land and build what we want... and you read my mind fiber thru the house in place of copper. But install a wall battery unit 14k ish where the solar charges it first then rest is sent out to the grid. And a switch that senses when power goes out and then routes all power to the home thru the wall battery unit. Best of both worlds since it's like 53 peso every 2 months to keep access to the grid here.

  18. I wasn't clear. It was metal, not cloth. I used the wrong word, but the basis is the same either way, IMO.

  19. You should be safe unless totalplay likes to be jerks and stop you from putting a router in your house. Chances are really low thou. Don't worry I'm married to a low tech redneck. And I have been called a high tech redneck. Come from a long line of blue collar workers and farmers lol

  20. IMO it is his problem. She paid him apparently in full for what she ordered, he delivered the wrong stuff and now wants to get paid more. I wouldn't let him remove it either until he gave her back the money she gave him. Otherwise she'll end up with no material. Sounds like the job is done. His problem, not hers. But I hope she has something in writing otherwise it is her word against his and this generally doesn't go well when the dispute is between expat and Mexican. If in fact what he provided is better and worth more, maybe she could offer to split the difference.

  21. Yes, true, but if the electric is out, meaning you can't charge the phone, it will use up the battery. Years ago, when I bought a new laptop at Office Depot, it came with an extra perk of a small battery pack. I never would have thought of purchasing such a thing, but I have used it many times to get phone or laptop juice when the electric has gone out for extended periods of time and keep it charged up.
