  1. I'm a smoker and I never light up in a restaurant. If I want an after dinner smoke, I walk out on the street. Now what about all those people who slather on perfume and aftershave that I have to breathe while trying to eat a meal?

  2. Perhaps if you had read my original post regarding my cigarettes, you would have seen that I said "I'll." leave my cigarettes at home. Smart people know that I'll is a contraction for I will. So fly back to your limb and wait for the next one!

  3. It is the rider's job to see the truck and assume they are going to pull out, then slow down and cover the brakes. I know many riders who have not had accidents. That doesn't include dropping the bike on gravel or sand or a slippery hill I've ridden for more than 60 years on or off, mostly on, without a serious wreck. The key is to be mega defensive, maintain space around you, and be totally focused when riding. Most motos have better brakes than cars and can stop faster. If all else fails, you lay the bike down. From what I understand here, the key to this wreck was excessive speed and failure to anticipate the truck might pull out on you. Unfortunately, younger riders are very prone to ride too fast for conditions and fail to anticipate the "four wheelers" are not going to see them or respect the rules of the road. That's why they comprise the majority of motorcycle related fatalities. You can ride around here safely but it does require a high level of awareness, defensiveness and correct assessment of speed appropriate to conditions. There is a pretty large group of local riders who clock thousands of km riding here without crashes. I'm taking a time out but looking to rejoin them on a lighter, lower moto. I was riding an R1200GS that is a heavy, tall bike and it just got to be too much of both for me.

  9. If you're just moving "data" files and folders, and not trying to move programs or an operating system, using an external hard drive or large thumb drive, (both with a USB connection) should work fine to "sneaker-net" the files from one to the other, using the external storage as the middle step. Just copy to the external device, and then once done or filled, move those to the new Chromebook. EZ-PZ.

  11. It's kind of sad. I posted about a good experience Heidi and I had to let people know and, to possibly help the restaurant. Unfortunately, there always seems to be vultures sitting on their respective limbs waiting to fly down and attack something! I swore months ago that I would never post on this board again. I guess, during a senior moment, I forgot...I won't make that mistake again! By the way, I don't need an English lesson from someone who obviously can't read! ADIOS!

  12. Yes, everyone will be doing 3D before long and labs will be like the caboose on a train. I misspoke before saying that Dental Express was doing 3D printing. They ARE using CAD/CAM principles but instead of the 'additive' 3D printing procedure they are using a 'subtractive' milling machine process. The former builds up (prints) a tooth and the latter 'whittles' down a small block to become a tooth. I'm still amazed that one, in little Ajijic Mexico, can have either of these technologies that produce a 'perfect' tooth (crown/bridge) while you wait. And with amazing margins for a great fit. No more 'wait for 10 days to 2 weeks' for a crown to come back from the lab... and maybe be sent back because it was not molded quite to perfection and won't fit properly.

  16. Unfortunately there are no drop in centers in Jalisco. Not enough vaccine available in Mexico. You must wait until your age group comes up in your municipality. Currently in Chapala and Joco, they are vaccinating 12 - 17 year-olds with existing medical conditions at the Community Hospital in Jocotopec. Watch the site below for updates. They usually update on the weekend. When they list persons over 18 who have not received their first jab, in your municipality, plan to show up. You likely will not receive an email. You will need to provide proof of address along with the other listed documents. https://coronavirus.jalisco.gob.mx/ruta-de-la-vacunacion/

  21. Do they teach driver's ed in schools here? If so, do they emphasize motorcycle and scooter skills and safety? Is there a separate test for m/c riders? In US the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) conducts classes in conjunction with State DMV's where the riders are educated and tested for licensing (I've taken courses/testing in VA and AZ). Any sort of group here that teaches m/c safety?

Most of these mofos are young, ride little scoots and never gave safe riding a thought or took a course. Gravel once in around 1966 when my then wife leaned the wrong way and dropped the bike safely in Ajijic when a gringa turned in front of me without looking. I only ride motos with one seat now.

  26. Hate to say it but its just not safe to ride a bike, scooter or moto around here. Also many folks just don't see folks on two wheels and yes I drove bikes and large motocycles in PNW before I stopped riding. I was the only fellow who did not limp in our group of riders and most of them were hurt by four wheelers not seeing them. I imagine truck did not see him. So SAD!

  35. OK, so it is not the plugging of pipelines, cancelling oil and gas leases on federal lands, shutting down fracking (that produces very clean natural gas), shutting down coal mines and power plants, etc., etc. etc. Lets give you that. Then what is going on??? Its anti-consumer pricing at the gas pumps and wait for it...its coming...coming...here is the real reason: COVID!!! Hee! hee! hee! This has become the catch all excuse for EVERYTHING!!! I see it in my business and anywhere someone needs an out...and don't you dare argue or else Dr. Fouche will be coming after you!!! The good news is that the American public (can you say voters) are not buying this at all. 36. Electric car batteries as an environmental hazard: In the last decade, China has rapidly expanded its “green” new energy vehicle (NEV) industry but recycling and disposing of hundreds of thousands of tons of used car batteries has become a pressing issue due to environmental concerns. Growth in China’s NEV industry took off in 2014 when nearly 78,500 NEVs were produced and some 75,000 were sold. As of September of this year, China’s NEV registration reached 6.78 million, of which 5.52 million are fully electric vehicles. The NEV industry predicts that its production and sales growth rate will remain above 40 percent in the next five years prompting the question of how to best manage the growing numbers of discarded lithium batteries from the NEVs. Industry data shows that the service life of lithium batteries used in electric vehicles is generally 5 to 8 years, and the service life under warranty is 4 to 6 years. That means, tens of thousands of electric car batteries will soon need to be discarded or recycled, and millions more down the road. According to the latest data from China Automotive Technology and Research Center, the cumulative decommissioning of China’s electric car batteries reached 200,000 tons in 2020 and the figure is estimated to climb to 780,000 tons by 2025. Presently, most end-of-life batteries are traded in the unregulated black market, raising serious environmental concerns. If such batteries are not handled properly, they could cause soil, air, and water pollution. “A 20-gram cell phone battery can pollute a water body equivalent to three standard swimming pools. If it is buried in the ground, it can pollute 1 square kilometer (247 acres) of land for about 50 years,” Wu Feng, a professor at Beijing Institute of Technology, once publicly stated. Electric car batteries are many times larger than cell phone batteries. According to Li Yongwang, a chemical engineering expert in China, pollution caused by NEV batteries is very likely far worse than the exhaust pollution from gasoline-run vehicles. If they are buried or discarded at will, Li said, they are not only toxic for the environment but they are a direct danger to people’s lives given they can explode from heat. Recycling of power batteries has become a pressing issue in China, and it’s considered a weak point that the Chinese authorities did not consider adequately when it heavily promoted the NEV industry. There are currently two different methods for recycling electric car batteries. One is to recover valuable raw materials after disassembly. The other is secondary utilization in other fields. At present, automobile power batteries are mainly divided into two types: ternary lithium batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries. Ternary lithium batteries have a relatively high content of rare metals such as nickel, cobalt, and manganese, and it’s more worthwhile to recover these. The main ingredients in lithium iron phosphate batteries are lithium and iron, which are less worthy of recovering. This type of battery is often recycled through secondary utilization, as its service life is longer. Regardless of the type of battery, the recycling market in China is huge. China Orient Securities has estimated that China’s power battery recycling market, including the two methods of recycling, is expected to reach $37 billion by 2025. In August this year, Chinese authorities issued the “Administrative Measures for the Secondary Utilization of Power Batteries for New Energy Vehicles,” requiring new energy vehicle manufacturers to establish power battery recycling channels. However, these car makers only bear the extra costs and reap no profits from adding battery recycling to their business. Chinese state media quoted an expert as saying that power batteries are not produced by NEV companies. Therefore, these companies have no incentive to recycle end-of-life power batteries. In addition, according to Chinese state media, there are a series of problems associated with the current recycling policies: non-uniform recycling standards, non-standard processes, inconsistent resource utilization efficiency, non-uniform pricing, and an unclear distribution of profits. Another problem is that, although there are many companies engaged in battery recycling in China, there are only 27 companies that have the qualifications for secondary utilization and recycling of batteries used in electric cars. The huge market, coupled with slow official actions, thus created favorable conditions for a black market. Presently, countless services can be found on China’s largest second-hand commodity trading platform Xianyu when searching for used car batteries. On this black market, power battery recycling is generally priced in tons. According to Chinese state media, the recycling price of power lithium batteries ranges from $1,250 to $1,563 U.S. dollars per ton. Most of these businesses purchase end-of-life batteries from all over the county. In comparison, prices set by officially designated companies are often lower than on the black market, as the secret companies are able to cut costs by evading regulatory measures, according to China Energy News. As a result, the official companies cannot even obtain any batteries. An industry expert disclosed to Beijing News that about 80 percent of end-of-life power batteries flow into black markets for recycling. When recycling is not an option for black market companies, the environment loses out. In 2018, authorities in Tieling City of Liaoning Province seized an illegal lead smelting plant and 330 tons of waste batteries. Workers at the plant dismantled storage batteries and discharged 50 tons of sulfuric acid directly into nearby land without any treatment, causing irreversible pollution.

  37. And remember, the US had become energy independent under you know who, with prices dropping until you know who took over less than a year ago. Now energy companies there are forced to buy from OPEC and other cartels who are simply naming thier price and laughing all the way to the bank!!! Meanwhile gasoline and home heating costs are going through the roof there. Why is this not clear as a bell to ALL???

  38. Well, the climate change confab in Scotland is over (maybe a better name would be CON-GAB). The thousands of stuffed suits are now streaming back home in thier polluting planes massaging thier arms from all the vigorous back slapping. They all signed an agreement to end the use of carbon energy by.....wait for it....WHENEVER!!! Yes that is right, India, right at the top of the offender list refused to set an end date so all the rest sighed and said OK, we will go along with WHENEVER!!! The cute poster girl of global warming was heard screaming as she was running out "The world is ending tomorrow!" However J_ _ _ K_ _ _ _ (we are not allowed to use names here), the U.S. Climate Change Czar (the one with the biggest jet and largest house) promptly announced that the U.S. would be ending the use of coal and closing all coal energy plants by 2030. This in addition to corking all the oil and gas pipelines. So all of our relatives and friends El Norte had better get ready to maybe retreating to caves and huddling around the fire...but wait!!! Did I not hear that wood burning will also be banned??? In the meantime China, India, Russia and all the others will continue on thier merry way opening new coal burning energy plants at a record pace, piping oil and gas to each other (and Europe), expanding thier economies by producing windmills and solar panels for all the chumps and laughing all the way to the bank!!! The leader of China (who did not even send a token low level bureaucrat) was asked why they were a no-show. He snapped back "we do not have the time for that garbage...we got work to do!!!" I am still hoping that we will all wake up and laugh, realizing that we were in a George Orwell nightmare...but no, he was off by a few years but his revelations are all coming true!!! We should all be thankful for the wonderful, warm springtime year-round weather here. Lets be grateful for that, however others are not so lucky!!! Just my opinion.

Sorry, years of deteriorating everything around here unless volunteers take care of the government's work ourselves has made me a bit cynical.

  43. Come on Pedro, you're getting a bit too personal here. Fred was not a former Mexican lawyer. And none of us know or should care about how free he was with his advice on U.S. legal matters. His questions were good one. We had the same and ended up doing a Mexican will because we own a house here. As noted, you can name your heirs as beneficiaries on bank and investment accounts. Actually, if you are certain who you are leaving it to, and the heirs are direct relatives I believe you can put them directly on your house deeds as well and avoid probate altogether. It does seem to rake a long, expensive time to probate a will here. If this might work for one, consult a notary. It didn't work for us because there are no blood relatives we'd leave anything to, let alone a house.
